Mystery and Imagination: Room 13 (1966)
the power of suggestion
like Lost Hearts before it, Room 13 was terrifying, unlike Lost Hearts however, barely anything happens yet it still scared the hell out of me at 9 years old. At night, in an old hotel a guest wakes to find his cases missing, maybe even the far wall of the room missing, opening onto deep, empty shadows, a light goes on in the next room and a shadow of the occupant dances across the grass beneath his window. On one occasion as the shadow dances all its hair stands up on end and the light is cut. But there is no other occupant - THERE IS NO ROOM NEXT DOOR. I would love for someone to discover a recording of Lost Hearts one day and of Room 13. This was a fantastic series.
Terror (1978)
amateurish production with an argento flavour
one of the lamest movies I've seen - the film begins inside a film about a witch being burned at the stake - if this was hammer it would have pace, drama, tension, and true hysteria.... but it's not - so it telegraphs its lame horror with no subtlety whatsoever. The opening scenes are feeble. These are then revealed to be the end sequence of a feature film a party is watching in the spooky old house of a film director. Someone in the audience says its rubbish and they're right! what follows is a bunch of set piece murders in the mode of dario argento but not one of them gels, holds any tension or surprise, or makes sense or credibility within the story.... Acting is poor, direction is weak but it is shot incredibly well - great cinematography.
low budget nonsense not worth wasting an hour on.
A Touch of the Sun (1979)
it's so bad you don't even need to know what its about
This film reveals that Edward d wood was a genius auteur after all. Unlike wood's work, this film reveals a total lack of charm, wit, strange beauty and oddball imagination. All prerequisites for a film if it is to be considered to be so bad it's good. This is an embarrassment to all concerned. Absolutely unfunny, unsexy, unimaginative and totally pointless.
Even the feeble special effects don't make you laugh - TV monitors in Mission Control which are supposedly showing rockets in flight are actually just colour photographs glued to the wall - it SHOULD be funny, but it isn't. Just one of the turkeys Reed mugged his way through for the cash. Does anyone know who commissioned this sorry waste of celluloid? AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! I know just writing about it gives it a mystique but I assure you it has none.
