Bridgerton (2020– )

Unaccurate and shallow
14 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a review only for season 1.

I am trying to stick it through the first season, 'cause I hope the second will be better.

The lack of historical accuracy is... appalling.

From what I see, it's probably maintained in the books as well, probably neither the author nor the director nor the script writer gave a flying * for historical accuracy.

I really don't mind the mixed cast as much, but everything else - the costumes are made of syntetic fabrics that I am pretty sure didn't exist in this era; some of the dialogues are, honestly, unbelievable; some of the characters act in a way that is even more unbelievable (say, Eloise smoking alone outside at night, and wearing her hair down and disorderly at all times); the queen being openly interested in matches and intrigue; the dances are implausible for high-society balls; aristocratic ladies attending boxing with wagers??? I could go on and on... Also, the male lead definitely doesn't give off the vibe of a wanted bachelor, and the chemistry is seriously lacking.

The plot is weak, shallow and predictable. I really hope season 02 is better, which is why I'm giving the show a chance.

Chernobyl (2019)
10/10
Wonderful and horrific!
26 May 2019
This show depicts very well the awful reality of Chernobyl (as much as we could envision it). This is one of the largest crimes against Ukraine, USSR and mankind as a whole that was committed in modern history. I am from one of the countries that the radiation cloud passed over. However, my country ranked highest in post-disaster contamination, because our own communist government didn't deem it to be necessary to notify people what happened (until more than a week later) or to tell them to take basic safety measures (ever). They were importing food and water for themselves while regular people were eating contaminated vegetables and meat. As a direct result, we are high in all cancer statistics in Europe and this guilt will be handed over to next generations who won't even have a vague idea of what the USSR was.

Rosalinda (1999)

Great!

This telenovela reminds me of my childhood - I was 8-9 years old when it was on TV in my country and me and my parents were absolutely obsessed by it. I think it was one of the reasons why I decided to learn Spanish at a later point in my life. Thalia's performance is outstanding, and overall this is a very sad telenovela, straight from the 1st episode. I stumbled across it now, I don't know how many years later, and it has again caught my attention. It is very impressive how a lot of the character names reflect their stories, in ex. "Rosalinda" - "Beautiful Rose", "Soledad" - "Solitude", "Dolores" - "Pains / Sufferings". It is one of the very few soap operas that remain unforgettable up to this day, even though it has all classic twists and turns - but also a lot of unexpected ones.

Dracula (2013–2014)
10/10
Truly magnetic!
17 February 2014
That's exactly how I've always portrayed Dracula, but somehow never seen it before. Charismatic, attractive, lethal. His eternal love for Mina is also nicely pictured, with his appreciation for her dreams and desires - something Jonathan fails to do. This is a modern touch that I simply adore - the image of the strong woman, which was missing in the original storyline. I also wonder how will the relationship between Dracula and Van Helsing develop, because for all we know, they have to end up like enemies hunting each other down. I dare say that the season finale left us with more questions than answers and that the story has yet to be continued. So I raise my hopes for a second season. My bf and I followed the show throughout the 1st season and can't wait to see more of this story. It has everything it should - romance, thriller, mystery and a beautiful background.

I liked it
18 April 2013
I should say that I didn't expect much from this movie before watching it. Maybe that is exactly the reason it didn't disappoint me. At the beginning of it I couldn't completely get the storyline, but at the middle everything just felt to its place. What makes this movie so fresh are its metaphors about the everyday life in Bulgaria - all the things we know and see daily, but they somehow don't make it to the media and society chooses to ignore them. What I didn't like is the first scene of the movie (it seemed a bit politically charged). It's been a long time since I've watched a movie that really did make me laugh. This one did. It has this strange, but typical for the Balkan region, sense of humor - partially bitter, partially foolish and surreal. Not that it's my favorite movie and I shall watch it over and over again, neither it gave me that strong of an impression. But it's better than I expected, and it seems like the movie industry in Bulgaria grows stronger. Soon it will deliver a product that is truly watchable and can be distributed worldwide and hypothetically make some real profit.
