A Fun Guilty Pleasure
1 March 2023
Just found this show and I'm bingeing 5-6 episodes a night after work.

Is this a masterpiece with top-notch CGI, Oscar-worthy performances, breathtaking cinematography, and flawless dialogue? No. But then, I don't expect that from SYFY shows. They're always a bit cheesy/campy, some writing could be better, and the CGI always needs help.

But if you can look past that and know what to expect, it's a gem of a show. It has some amazing one-liners that make me laugh out loud into my living room, fun and loveable characters, entertaining storylines, and speaking as a young queer woman, FINALLY a beautiful and healthy LGBTQA relationship. Our community is so under-represented as it is, and other, more big-name shows (looking at you, L Word Gen Q) portray excessively toxic and unhealthy queer stereotypes. Nicole and Waverly are so cute together, and the mixed support and hate from the small-town community is believable and realistic. I love that their relationship just fits right in; it doesn't feel forced for the diversity badge, it just...is a part of the show, right alongside straight relationships. Which is how it should be.

If you can get past the typical SYFY campiness, just sit back and enjoy. It's a fun way to fill the quiet evenings of winter.

The L Word: Generation Q (2019–2023)

Unhealthy
1 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to like this show. I haven't seen the original, so I came in with a fresh mind. Also note, I'm a 25 year-old baby gay, so this was one of my first forays into the lesbian scene. Probably not the best choice.

I quit watching halfway through the third season. This show is full of toxic relationships and feeds unhealthy lesbian stereotypes. Everyone is always cheating (and the one who doesn't is made to seem like an uptight weirdo because of it), nobody is over their ex, and nobody seems to have any morals. There were only a handful of seemingly mature, healthy women going into the second season, and then we lost a few more. By the time I stopped watching, only one character still had any claim to decency. It was so incredibly frustrating and just perpetuates toxic lesbian culture. I know it's a drama, but the number of times I went "Don't do it. Don't kiss her. Okay, great, here we go again," was insane. There are more ways to create drama than making cheater after cheater. Predictable and frustrating.

I'm going to be controversial
16 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not entirely sure where all the hate is coming from. I can understand being upset with some questions going unanswered, but some of the vitriol is a bit much. I actually really liked it. It wasn't nearly as terrible as some people are making it sound, but it could have been better. Yes, there were questions I wanted answered; What happened to our boy Ed? What universe did Julianna travel to, was it Trudy's? What happened to the Smiths in that universe? How and why was Julianna so integral to the portal and all the timelines? And of course, who were all those people? They had to be dead in this universe or never existed at all, so...I'd love to know more. How did they get there?

I'm astounded some people were rooting for John. I was rooting for Helen the whole finale. John was selfish and wanted to kidnap his own son from a (mostly) happy life and bring him to what would be a terrible, terrible world in his son's eyes. His own father a Nazi general with plans to execute MILLIONS more people? I thought he was an amazing character and I never could really tell which side he was on, and I thought that was really intriguing. But he needed to go, in the end. Helen really came through at the end. I was waffling over whether or not I liked her character for a while, but the final season sold me on her. She realized who she had become and accepted the consequences after assuring the safety of her remaining children. In my opinion, she kept her heart in the end. John lost himself.

I would love another season to finalize some more character stories and answer more questions, but I know we're probably not going to get one. Hell, even just one or two more episodes. Who knows? Maybe if we clamor for more, we'll get something; it didn't end all that long ago. Until then, I'll happily rewatch this series every once in a while. I loved all 4 seasons (I binged them all in less than 2 weeks), all of the acting and characters, and a thoroughly intriguing and entertaining alternate history fiction story.

FBI: Most Wanted: Patriots (2021)
Season 3, Episode 2

A perfectly good episode
15 December 2021
Giving a good review to try to balance out the hate from conservatives and other pro-insurrection people. Many of the bad reviews, if not all, are whining about the political nature of the episode. I'm not sure what everyone expected, given that the insurrection was a deliberate attack on the government; of freaking course the *FBI* is going to be going after those people, it's LITERALLY their job. And I don't recall many Democratic or progressive people supporting the attacks. Were there some? Probably. But the vast majority was definitely conservatively minded. You may not like it, but it's an accurate portrayal of the event and government response. If you don't want to watch a show with political themes, for God's sake, don't watch a show that's called "FBI."

Intense
15 December 2021
An intense and unfortunately all too real episode. My heart was pounding the whole time imagining what it would be like for me in that scenario. Good job giving all the characters adequate screen time despite a large ensemble that included family and even some good Samaritans. Also a good portrayal of the whole "run-hide-fight" scenario that is sadly too relevant for everyone these days, whether they're an agent or an innocent shopper.

What the hell happened to the movie about the guy and baby trying to survive in space? I'm so confused. Why so disturbingly sexual?

Good Lord Y'all, It's a Movie, Not a Documentary
10 April 2020
I thought this was an adventurous, fun movie with great acting, a good story, and thrills. Is it historically or scientifically accurate? No. It's a story INSPIRED by true events. If you wanted a true-to-life, 100% factual piece, go check out a documentary from the library.

Felicity and Eddie are a delight to watch, and the story is interesting, thrilling, and fun. People are way too nit-picky for their own good. Just enjoy it for what it is, historical FICTION.

Not as bad as these reviews say
9 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Sheesh, so many negative reviews. May of them from January and February if you'll notice, just as the show is beginning. The first few episodes of a new show are always rough around the edges. The show has gotten better as it goes on, and most recently, the FBI and FBI Most Wanted crossover (Reveille) led to a 3 million viewer jump from the usual 9.5 million.

People whine about the typical storylines like white boy school shooter or extremist racist conservative bashing, but come on guys, those are actual problems the FBI deals with in real life. Racist, sexist progressives and female murderers and school shooters are relatively rare. Upset with the gay, strong female, or minority characters? Deal with it or don't watch it, the world is not straight, white, and/or male.

Acting is decent, nothing spectacular, but then, I'm not looking for Oscar and Emmy-winning stars on your average primetime police procedural. I just want to be entertained, and I am. Characters could use some more development and chemistry, but from what I've heard, slow development is typical of Dick Wolf shows, so I'll wait and see.

Ignore the crazy, overly-fanatic fanboy cry babies
27 December 2019
Any rating under a 5 is ridiculous. This is a perfectly fine finale for the saga. Are some plot points a little too vague or convenient? Sure. Some inconsistencies? Maybe. But it's jam packed with action, surprise twists, and fun cameos and call-backs. A satisfying ending to the adventure for casual fans (like me), and even more devoted fans who have been there from the beginning (my mom). The crazy fanboys are never satisfied with anything!

Good Start So Far
15 October 2018
I'm not entirely sure why everyone's complaining about Sisto's character Jubal yelling so much. He a floor team coordinator, he's got a whole room full of people who all need to hear him clearly. Anyway, that doesn't bother me too much, I just think it's kind of ridiculous for people to give a poor rating just because a character annoys them.

I really like the show so far. Diverse story lines and nice action, with minimal BS side plots like love interests and family drama. The show sticks to the main point and does it well. The characters are great too; a nicely diverse cast, all played by some great actors. I love Missy's Maggie; there's more to her than meets the eye. She's intelligent, strong, and confident, but "Prey" helped show that yes, she is still human and occasionally loses. I also think she might be hiding a past abuse or trauma, reflecting on the "1 in 5" conversation between her an OA in the car and her emotions at the very end of the episode right before the credits.

Speaking of OA, I really like how he supports Maggie and doesn't question her calls. They have each other's backs like true partners, but they so far don't press and pry and are good at understanding each other and their own space. They balance each other out and really play well off each other's strengths and weaknesses. I also think it's cool to have a middle-eastern character on the team; it brings a new insight into his culture and really augments the background knowledge of the team. I like seeing how his perspective and knowledge can help in various cases.

The other team members are great too. Ebonee's Kristen is a badass, super smart tech wiz; she's a great addition to the team. Like I said earlier, Jubal seems to be a good guy, and I don't get all the hate. He's efficient and runs his floor well; to do that, he needs to be fast and loud. I liked that he got some field work in "Prey."

Overall, it seems promising so far, and I wait every week for the next episode.

Took Me a Few Viewings to Appreciate
3 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I'll admit, my first reaction to this movie wasn't very positive. It was such a HUGE departure from the trend of the first two Thor movies that I kinda felt blindsided. I was pretty pissed at the casual, throw-away deaths of the Warriors Three. I actually said to my mom during my first time watching it (she had seen it before me), "That's it? They're dead, just like that?" And Odin's death was pretty lame too, considering the ceremony Frigga got. I also wanted Hela to be more threatening than she was funny; after all, she massacred the palace before her banishment, slaughtered the Valkyrie forces, and laid siege to Asgard. I feel she was made a tad too comedic for her character's own good.

However, upon watching it a few more times, I came to appreciate the comedic aspects of the movie. While it felt maybe just a tad overdone, the comedy in general hits the mark. The rapport developed between Thor, Banner, Valkyrie, and Loki was interesting and entertaining. Korg and Miek were funny, but not entirely necessary to the story (but I still like them). The actors worked well together and their chemistry seemed real, the music was awesome, the last battle was entertaining, and the colorful visuals were very fun. I give it a 7 because it's somewhere in between what my original review might have been (5 or 6) and what my newly appreciative review would be (an 8 or 9).

Stick with it
27 January 2018
I don't usually write reviews, but I felt the need to combat all the 1's and 2's. I think those people watched the pilot and gave up. Yes, the pilot is a bit weak, and there are scenes that are a bit ridiculous, but I just watched the 4th episode and holy shit. Stick with it people, it gets better.

A Masterpiece
23 January 2018
At the time I'm writing this, I'm 20 years old and still think this is one of the best animated movies I've ever seen, and the score/soundtrack remains one of my favorites of all time. The animations and landscapes are breathtaking, the music is absolutely beautiful, and the story is wonderful. I watched this movie countless times when I was younger, and still do on occasion when I'm home on college break. The themes of love, friendship, freedom, spirit, hope, and strength abound in this feature. While its target audience may be children, I am sure that adults who love horses or the wild west will very much appreciate this film.

Hans Zimmer does a fantastic job on the instrumental pieces of the film. From simple and lovely pieces that provoke longing and love to powerful, soaring sequences provoking feelings of freedom and pure strength, Zimmer outdoes himself on this one. He also masterfully managed to weave songs that seem to match the beat of a horse's pounding hooves, adding to the awesomeness of the score. Bryan Adams' unique husky voice fits right into the story and performs catchy and intriguing pieces with ease. The story, while maybe not unique, is wonderfully written and will definitely choke up to stoniest of hearts (with the aid of the beautiful score). 10/10 recommend this movie to pretty much anyone.

Orphan Black (2013–2017)

Best TV Show Ever!
13 November 2016
I mean, I watch my fair share of TV shows, but Orphan Black is one of my absolute favorites. I'm always left on the edge of my seat, anxious for the next week's episode to air. This show is unbelievably original, and the twisted, complex story lines make for some extremely interesting events.

Make no mistake, this show is NOT for the faint of heart, or anyone under, say, 15 years old. There is extreme violence, seriously twisted people and events, and murderous, psychopathic characters; if this were a movie, I'd say it would probably be rated R. This show touches on some very sensitive topics that not everyone will be comfortable watching. But, it has its lighthearted, funny, and tender moments too. It's a great mix of serious and scary moments, along with fun, sweet moments, too.

And good Lord, Tatiana Maslany can act! I'm always forgetting that she plays all the clones, and I am constantly blown away by her talent. This TV show is definitely worth watching, if not for the story line, than just for appreciating how unbelievably talented the main actress is!

Excited for the Second Episode
6 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, lots of bad reviews. I, for one, enjoyed the pilot very much. Yes, the characters had a bit of a hasty introduction; I wouldn't have minded seeing a bit more backstory. Yes, the CGI could be better, but it's not like it was deplorable. The story also seemed a bit rushed, too. Hopefully in the upcoming episodes we will get more in-depth storytelling.

The worst part for me was the Delta Force guy. It annoyed me when he stupidly ignored the rules of time travel (don't change ANYTHING) for a pretty face. She may have reminded him of his late wife, but come on. That's a bit of a lame excuse. He was explicitly told not to change anything, and what's he do? Immediately try to change things. For being a member of an elite group of the US Army, he doesn't follow orders very well.

What hooked me was the last 2 minutes. I really want to know how the Hindenburg NOT blowing up so majorly screwed up Lucy's past!

Cute movie to pass the time
20 May 2016
I had a night by myself recently and decided to watch this movie. As a Marvel Universe fan, I love Scarlett and Chris and I thought the trailer was great, so I checked out the movie on Netflix. I'm really happy I did.

While it's nothing overly special, The Nanny Diaries is a cute movie that I think is well cast. Scarlett plays an endearing college grad named Annie who gets a large helping of reality when she becomes a nanny to a young boy named Grayer. At first the kid annoyed me, but as Grayer's neglected life was revealed, I began to see a boy who simply wanted to be a kid and have fun. Annie and Grayer develop an adorable and believable relationship as the movie progresses, and as the movie comes to I close, I wanted Annie to take Grayer and raise him herself. They were too sweet together.

Harvard Hottie (Chris Evans) and Annie's relationship is also cute, with understandable bumps as Evans's character becomes exasperated with Annie's dedication to Grayer and the family. Their chemistry is natural and reflects their friendship outside of work.

Mr. X was a good "villan," and I loved to hate his selfish character. His treatment of his son and wife angered me to no end, and the ending of the movie was extremely satisfying to me. Mrs. X was infuriating at the beginning, but as the movie showed her more vulnerable and sad side, I began to feel for her and empathize with her treatment by her husband.

Overall, it was a simple, cute movie to pass the night home alone, and I will probably watch it again in the future.

A Stunning Movie
7 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Spirit was one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. If only movies today were as amazing as this one. The animation is stunning and the music is gorgeous and moving. The story is captivating and emotional, and the characters are well developed and lovable. Spirit's longing for his family and true courage is touching. His full out determination to escape and return home has you sympathizing with him and encouraging him throughout his entire journey. I recommend this movie for any and all ages, as it would touch anyone's heart who truly understood what the true spirit of the west is. This is definitely a keeper.
