Rings (2005)
Inspired
I think that the Idea behind this cult that is forming right in front of our very eyes, that cult being Samara basically and what happened to her, very interesting and since buying the collectors edition DVD's I must have watched RINGS at least ten times and I enjoyed it the tenth time just as much as the first time.
Rings makes the perfect join between THE RING and RING TWO. Lots of people complain about the unexplained bits of the story, personally I think that makes this brilliant cult film ten time better then it already is. As far as I'm concerned these films are some of if not the best pieces of film making to date, not forgetting the original RINGU of course which was also great considering the low budget.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT.
I think Hideao Nakatta (Apologies for the spelling) has created one of the best Horror characters in Samara and her life, short as it was, would make a great film by itself. (Mabey I should have kept that Idea to myself) The classic art of symbolism which the Japanese do so well has been done to perfection with this story. The way they have shown Samara's connection with water has almost made it a character in its self. I think that these films have a lot more in them then most people care to reallies and if you really think about everything thats happened up to now has had a reason. Finally, at the centre of all this is of course the tape, which in its self is pretty creepy, but everything you saw on that tape the first time it's shown to us has now been explained in some way or another.
These films are truly amazing.
The Ring Two (2005)
I kinda liked it...
I don't understand why all these people are writing bad things about this "good" movie.
I think this film follows on well from the last one and is in no way the same as the first one, apart from the fact that it is continuing the story, which lets be fair, is original and an original story is hard to find these days. I think "Ring Two" answers a lot of the questions that "The Ring" asked and it dose tie up all the loose ends. DO NOT SEE THIS FILM WITHOUT SEEING "THE RING" FIRST.
Last but not least this film is a "Horror film" which is different from a "Teen Slasher" in the sense that it's actually scary, and has a bit of depth. If you like "slasher" films then you might find this a bit dull. There's no blood or pathetic killers in cheaply made hallo ween costumes running around with knives that are obviously plastic. If you have a brain and you know how to use it you might actually like this film.
Constantine (2005)
Ouch!!!
Clunky, badly written, badly acted, predictable and last but not least boring.
The only reason I didn't walk out after the first twenty minutes was because I had just paid £5.50 and how was I to know it was going to get worse. How many corny one liners can you have in a film.
I thought this film was a bit of a mash up of THE EXORCIST, DOGMA and TERMINATOR. The story of this film is a bit thin and what I think they were trying to do with it has been done so many times before its a bit stale. If your going to do a "religon gone wrong" film at least make it original.
Hide and Seek (2005)
Hide and Seek (AKA The Shining)
I find it very hard to agree with most of the reviews for this Film on this site.
Hide and seek is'nt bad but at the same time it's not brilliant. Agreed, the acting is patchy in places and it does bare a striking (Excuse the pun) resemblance to The Shining and you can see the so-called scary bits coming thanks to the badly used mood music. As for the acting, I think Dakota Fanning was unmatched through out. She did a good job creating some fairly chilling moments and in places I think she made De Neiro look like a novice.
I'm undecided as to how I'd recommend this film, I'm tempted to see it again to watch it from a technical point of view.
Independence Day (1996)
Some people just haven't got a clue!
Lots of bad reviews with a few people who are just tring to be different by saying it was OK. Lots of people seem to be saying "Without the special effects the movie would have nothing to offer"...ARE YOU TRYING TO SOUND LIKE A COMPLETE IDOT OR DOES IT COME NATURALLY? Has it occurred to any of you bozos that just mabey the effects ARE the point of the film??? The acting isn't as bad as lots of people seem to be saying, its not great by any means but I have seen worse. I can think of a lot of films which have worse acting in them: I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, SCREAM 1,2 AND 3, THE MUMMY, THE MUMMY RETURNS, TWISTER and THEY, those are a few that come to mind.
Is America capable of making a film which doesn't centre on it's self???
The Village (2004)
Worth watching
As far as I can tell this film is actually fairly original. (Gains a few stars for that alone) The plot and storyline of this film are very profesionaly thought out and executed. I feel that the characters are well rounded and the script is descent.
Don't go and see this film if you like a scream-a-minute roller-coaster horror film because thats not what it is. It's an intelligent film which dose require the use of at least two brain cells. The twist at the end will definitely be unexpected but at the same time quite simple.
M Night Shyamalan is a name to look out for.
All in all this is a good film, worth renting
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
Pathetic
Bad, boring, pradictable and last but not least a waste of money (Yours and the film companies).
The best part of this film is the fact that it has JLH and SMG in it, two VERY attractive young women, sadly their acting wasn't as good as their looks.
I think that SMG's performance in THE GRUDGE was far better. much more believable.
I fail to see how this film could be considered good or even bearable for that matter. It was totally devoid of suspense and creativity not to mention good acting. Why do people bother writing this stuff, it's primitive and totally unworthy of it's success.
If you want a SCARY film rent THE RING or RINGU the original Japanese version that is a scary film!
Urban Legend (1998)
Painfully bad
This film is bad. It was inspired by a film that in my opinion was equally as bad (Like my spelling). Good old fashioned American (Surprise, surprise) teen slasher film, a genre that was a bad idea from the begging, and is only scary for people who sleep with the light on and or don't understand fear. This film is cheap and dull and should have gone straight to video/DVD, but as usual Hollywood producers were still on a high from the undeserved success of SCREAM and thought they were on to a money maker. And this is what the next generation of filmmakers aspire to??? lord give me strength!!!!! I'm a keen filmwriter and If I ever write a film like this or any other teen slasher film from the recent past I will die ashamed and embarresed.
In case you haven't realized I didn't like this film!!!
Last Rites (1998)
Descent...for a TV movie
For a TV movie this is pretty good, Randy Quaid is EXCELLENT! I think the idea behind this film is what pulls people in and keeps them interested. The first time I saw this film I only saw the last half hour and waited almost two years for it to turn up again on the TV listings, I have to say it was worth the wait. As I've already said Quaid is by far the best performance of this film and carries it for a lot of the time.
They could of very easily overdone the bits about the vision and made it very corny but the didn't and I think it paid off I have two ratings for this film, as a TV movie I give it 7/10 But more generally as a film I give it 5/10
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
.
I think the people who run this site should add an extra bit to there guidelines: strictly no creativity of any kind.
I will start with the person who said that this film was made up of completely pointless events and then made the excuse that he hadnt read the book so he didn't understand the story...READ THE B@OO*Y BOOK THEN! Next the people who said this film was too long...Maybe Whinne the pooh would be more your thing.
Last but not least the people who said that this film was a disappointment...Could you do any better??? I Don't THINK SO! My vote is for the film, not the bunch of creativly challenged loonies that fill this site
White Noise (2005)
Good idea, OK film
Lets get something straight, this film IS scary in places and isn't boring unless your the type of person who goes for movies like SCREAM 1,2 and 3 and I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER in which case this film probably is a bit too advanced for you.
I admit the film isn't great and the plot change halfway through is a bit drastic but overall its not a bad film.
I've noticed a lot of other users comment on the slow start and how boring it is, If you've got an attention span of five seconds or less then I can see how this film would be boring, but If you have a brain and like to use on a regular basis I think you'll agree it gets off to a good start and relatively speaking isn't that slow.
So basically I think that this film is for more intelligent views who like to think about what there watching.
Titanic (1997)
Pointlss
Where ever do I start?
Let me get this right, a story that e-v-e-r-y-o-n-e knows the end of is made into a film (Again) and the entire world goes to see two million times despite the fact that they know exactly whats going to happen, and then to top it off they praise it like its the best film ever made.
OK so the main point of the film is the love story between Jack and Rose, even thats crap, does the word cleche mean anything to anyone!
So in summery it's a story which has been told half a million times too many, the acting is...well there is'nt any, and as for creativity the only word that comes to mind is .(Yes its that bad!)
I suppose you cold say that I didn't like this film very much.
The Grudge (2004)
creepy but not much else
I find myself disagreeing with all of the comments I've read on this site about "The Grudge". Some people are saying its a great film and some are saying it's not worth there time, I think your all going too far in both direction as far as how good the film is or isn't. You want my opinion here it is.
##POSSIBLE SPOILERS##
In all honesty I think this film is a bit of a disappointment considering it came from the same mind as "The Ring" which I think is one of the best horror films ever made. I found it impossible not to be reminded of "The Ring" while watching this film. The concept was far to similar, in "The Ring" it was a cursed tape which killed people, in "The Grudge" it was a house, obscuring the face of the doomed seems to be another recurring theme.
On the subject of it being hard to follow, i think you'll find that all films are hard to follow if you sit in the cinema for two hours and chat to your mate about how bad your ex-boyfriend was in the bedroom (adressed at the two girls who sat behind me).
I don't know if this film was a result of a bad day at the office for the writer (whose name I can't say let alone spell) or if he just had a bit of luck with "The Ring", however you look at it I don't think this film even comes near to "The Ring".
Black Christmas (1974)
Are we all talking about the same film?
After hearing lots of good things about this film I decided to rent it and see for my self.
Not only did I find it boring and predictable but I also thought the story was flat and some of the acting was severely primitive.
I've seen some pretty bad horror films in my time and nearly all of them would blow this film clean out of the water. To all the people who though it was scary, what exactly did you find scary and why?
(This is just my opinion, feel free to disagree as much as you like)
Session 9 (2001)
about f%@*ing time
Finally a proper horror film!
This film scares you while you watch it and most importantly continues to bug you after you've seen it. For all those people who thought this film was boring, you obviously don't understand fear as much as you say or think you do.
This film is aimed at a deeper level then all those other "horror" films like SCREAM 1 2 and 3, I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and it's sequel and to an extent BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (I haven't seen BOOK OF SHADOWS so I cant comment), the films that give you a cheap thrill when the killer jumps out from behind the door with some sort of mask and a knife, fish hook or whatever, it's a quick 30 second "OH MY GOD!" moment and it's all over by the time you leave the cinema and by the next day you've practically forgotten it. BLAIR WITCH PROJECT is more along the lines of real fear as it lets the imagination do most of it.
The point I'm trying to make is that real fear isn't about seeing some guy in a mask chasing people with a knife followed by gallons of fake blood, no, it's what you don't know or see that will really freak you. Add the element of not knowing to an atmospheric setting and some mood music and you end up with the tools to make a good horror film.
Session 9 really prays on the active imagination, it teases you with a quick glimpse here and there until the tension is at it's hight when it all comes screaming out of the gloomy world of uncertainty. Session 9 is good but it isn't the be all and end all of the horror genra, if future writers use the right tools in the right way we could be in for some REAL FEAR non of that cheap 30 second s%$t.
The bottom line is that you should watch what you enjoy, everyone enjoys a cheap thrill at some point.
