Troy (2004)
Not bad, but not the Iliad.
I might have liked Troy better if I knew nothing about the Iliad. Troy is not an adaptation of the Iliad, it is based only VERY loosely upon it. This movie just uses the names. Without giving away spoilers, some characters that are major in the Iliad are given very short shrift here.
It's an OK movie if you can watch it for what it is, and understand that you are NOT watching a movie version of the Iliad. This movie comes about as close to the Iliad as would a Xena version. It does provide entertaining spectacle, and hopefully people will become interested enough to learn about the actual legends.
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)
Dumb, but fun.
I'll admit it, the only reason that I went to this movie was because it didn't cost me anything. I went to see Spider Man 2 at a drive-in, and it was a double feature. It was a work night, but I decided to give it a try - how bad could it be? Besides, I could always leave if I didn't like it.
It's a stupid movie, I'll admit that. But it is fun, it is funny, and is a great send up of the sports movie genre. Some of the reviewers are bound and determined to be offended, but it is a fun movie. The movie works well because it doesn't take itself seriously at all. Worthwhile if you are not in a serious mood, and especially worthwhile if you didn't pay for it. If you are uptight, you might not like it, the movie can be a little vulgar.
Gekijôban Poketto Monsutâ: Myûtsû no Gyakushû (1998)
You know, I didn't *quite* hate it.
The opening uber-kiddie cartoon was horribly painful, but in a sort of masochistic way it was fun. I imagine that a horrific torture might be watching the uber-kiddie cartoon over and over without stop.
The rest of the movie wasn't quite totally and completely horrid. It felt like someone had an OK plot, but was forced to graft it onto a crappy Pokemon format. Pokemon is just a slight step up from Teletubbies. I'm not anti-Anime, just opposed to crappy anime.
The movie works best in the parts where it feels least like an episode of Pokemon. This might have been a decent movie if the author could have sold the idea to someone other than Pokemon.
That '70s Show (1998)
The only sitcom I watch.
Now that Frasier is off the air, there is only one sitcom that I watch and that is "That 70's Show". It's good, it is funny, the people are pretty much believable and of course, Donna (Laurie Prepon) is beyond gorgeous. Jackie (Mila Kunis) is supposed to be the pretty one, but she's chopped liver next to Donna.
"That 70's Show" works for all the reason that "That 80's Show" failed. On "That 80's Show", they took all the 80's stereotypes, grossly exaggerated them, and thrust them all together. As gross exaggerations, they weren't believable, and in any case, they wouldn't be hanging out together.
By contrast, the cast of "That 70's Show" are fairly believable, and it is easy to imagine these people hanging out together. Go to any school, and you will be able to find people there that match up well with the characters.
