Blood (2022)
Meh! Slow and illogical, could have been so much more!
Only just a 5. The idea is sound, as is the acting etc. But it just doesn't make sense.
If the kid was craving blood when he was in hospital, why on earth would the mother, a nurse, try and immediately hide it, and set about trying to feed his 'addiction' to it? Surely any normal person would would say "Hey, look, he drank blood and he's getting better, let's figure out what's going on and cure him....."
So, assuming she ignores the logical thing to do and takes him home, just like in the film... What's the best way to get blood? Yup ok, she can steal some from the hospital, but once that's a no no because they've found out, surely the next logical step would be go to a butcher or slaughter house and get pigs blood. No doubt you could buy it by the bucket load there, and if the kid really would only end up drinking warm blood, well go and buy a pig or three and slaughter them as needed!! Maybe I'm over simplifying it, because clearly the most logical step was to kidnap someone and periodically drain them (rolls eyes!)
Ignoring all the illogical story throughout, then what you're left with is a film which doesn't really do much for the first hour or so. At 1hr45 it seemed extremely long. Had they worked more of the story along the lines of 'why' the dog bite caused his vampire'ism and just kept him in hospital feeding his addiction while the mum investigated exactly what was going on with the tree, then I think it could have been a gripping story and much more worthwhile film.
Shame, it had promise, but lost its way in the first 15 minutes.
Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023)
Just.... can't.... stop.... watching...
This is so bad that I just couldn't stop watching. The film could have been so much more. Yes, there's lots of blood and gore, but the story is just odd and the costumes of Pooh and Piglet are like a bad fancy dress. Couldn't stop watching once I'd started, but not in a good way... more because it was like a car crash.
I think this was an opportunity lost to make a cracking film which would have ruined Winnie the Pooh for countless adults that grew up with him. However, no doubt this will eventually become one of those classic films like 'Bad Taste'. I wonder if they'll make a sequel and spit roast Piglet!?!?!?
First Signal (2021)
Time is better spent unblocking a toilet!
Unfortunately I didn't look at the reviews on IMDB until after I'd started watching it. It was recommended on Amazon Prime as an 8/10, and I fell into the trap of judging a book by its glitzy cover.
It was awful! Not just bad, but awful! 99% of the film takes place in a conference room of the local Marriott hotel. Present in the room is the (very unconvincing) President, a couple of military types in ill fitting uniforms, and a couple of secret service.
There is a pump action coffee put in the corner (obviously what you'd serve the President!). The dialogue is awful, badly acted and wooden. The picture and audio is like something from a 1980's VHS copy, which makes focussing on the film itself difficult. The story itself does have a little potential, but it's so badly played out that it is completely lost.
If this was a school film project, I still would have expected more.
Don't waste your time! Stubbing your toe repeatedly for 2hrs is time better spent!
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Visually superb, but VERY weak story!
The first Avatar film was obviously ground-breaking when it came to the visual world, and at the time, this made up for a relatively weak story. 'Unobtanium', really? What an uninspired name for a resource which is difficult to mine.
Anyhow, moving on to this film, I just don't get the whole story...
If your tribe are in danger by a known enemy, why on earth would you go and put another tribe in danger by hiding out with them? What a selfish, self-important, arrogant thing to do! It was obvious from the start that eventually they would put that tribe in danger too, but they didn't seem to give a monkeys!
Where on earth did the two sprogs come from? There was absolutely no mention of any of these types of relationships happening in the first film for either Grace or the Colonel . To suddenly have two kids pretty much being the main characters in this film just defies sense or logic, and shows a complete lack of respect for the audience! For anyone justifying these characters by some sort of hidden back story from the first film is just using lazy excuses!
What?? The Colonel is alive and in a avatar body? Again, lazy writing to bring back the antagonist!
I was excited to see this sequel, but feel very let down by a lazy, boring and dull story, trying to ride on the "Look at the graphics" selling point. You did that 14 years ago... this time you need a good story!
I won't be going to the cinema to see the third instalment in 2024, I'll wait for it to come out on a streaming service! Shame!
Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Would have enjoyed it more had it not been so over hyped.
As with a lot of films which are over hyped and over advertised, they never live up to the expectations set.
I'm a big fan of the original films, and even the TV series. I thought Evil Dead Rise would be a good opportunity to update the franchise to a 'proper horror'. There is blood, gore, and lots of it (including a nod to the original 'flying eyeball'), but it just seems to miss the link to make it scary. The overuse of violin tension strings, and general lack of suspense and jump scares just leaves it a little flat. There were several times throughout the film that I had to question the actions of some of the characters. Being a kid is no excuse for playing dumb in a horror movie! It's just frustrating to the audience!
I found myself getting a bit bored through the film and must have looked at my watch at least 3 times. It's over 30 years since the last film, and to be honest, I expected more. Even if you take it as a stand alone film, it would not change my opinion.
I watch a lot of films several times over, but this won't be one of them. Worth a watch, but that's it!
Men (2022)
What did I just watch?
Firstly, I get why there are some low scoring reviews, but I actually quite enjoyed it. It was 'different' in an odd sort of way.... without trying to give anything away, the last 20 minutes reminded me of John Carpenters' The Thing. I felt there could have been more at the end, but then that might just be because I didn't quite get it totally. Would it be a film I'd watch again, probably not, but it gets a 6 because did enjoy it for some reason, I'm just not sure why!
Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021)
Disappointing and dull
I couldn't wait to see this film as I love most of the other films in the series. I was really disappointed after seeing this one. It's paranormal activity in name only. Half way through and I was becoming very bored. The second half is predictable, unoriginal, and leaves you feeling cheated. As a stand alone film, it's not awful, it just has nothing to do with paranormal!! Really hoping the next one is more like the others in the series. I need the hairs on the back of my neck to stand up!
Home (2016)
Worth a watch!!
I don't get the really low average score... it's a reasonable horror. A couple of jumpy bits, nothing particularly original, but an ok movie to watch on your subscription service. The teacher should stick to teaching and not acting as he's rather wooden.
Worth a punt if there's nothing else to watch!
