Sound of Metal (2019)
DISTURBING BUT VERY REAL
First of all, it's not a movie about music. It's all about hearing and psychology. That's why, the name and the poster of the movie is a bit misleading the audience as many people said after watching it.
The storytelling is quite boring and disturbing in many ways and you even don't want to keep watching this movie while watching some scenes.
So, the narrative has an absolutely disturbing vibe from start to finish. Also, we did not get any clear message in the end of the film, it was very predictable.
Despite this, the acting was really great. Especially, riz ahmed has proved that he has some really serious talent in these types of drama movies. Olivia cooke was fine too. Acting was so real, i must say this.
To sum up, i don't recommend you to watch it unless you really want to be disturbed through your every cell of your body.
The Gentlemen (2019)
A MODERN GUY RITCHIE CLASSIC
As we know very well, Guy Ritchie has his own way of storytelling which always includes guns, drugs and a lot of action for sure. In this movie, he continues his tradition with an incredible male-leading cast.
The movie has not a curious or thought-provoking plot just like all Ritchie movies but there's always really quality time in terms of entertainment.
The cast is absolutely brilliant: McConaughey is always himself with his typical charming attitude and Texan accent. Charlie Hunham just looks like he got out from a Sons of Anarchy set. Besides, Hugh Grant and Colin Farrell is absolutely hilarious as hell.
The storytelling is a quite Ritchie style, has a complex structure but not deep, just as he always did in his every movie.
In general, i really recommend this movie if you are just looking for have some fun, not for some more.
I Origins (2014)
HALF ROMANTIC HALF EXISTENTIAL
It's a deep movie with some artistic and religious references all around the film. Even the main characters are like the opposites: The science man vs. the spiritual woman.
Besides, there are a lot of symbolical meanings of the objects to explain the "holy" meaning of things. For instance, opening the door at the end of the film represents opening yourself to the other side of the world just like Sofi said in the bedroom scene.
And also the obvious elevator scene which represents the main connection between the indian girl and Sofi can be explained in this way too.
These scenes are very impressive of course, however in general, the whole plot changes when Sofi dies in the middle of the movie. That's why the first part of the film feels like a romantic movie but the second part is a scientific adventure movie which is absolutely weird.
I wish that the storytelling of the movie was based on a more strict and direct narrative. Because of this, i lost the interest in the whole structure of the movie.
It could have been a cult film, i'm deeply sorry for that it obviously not.
Tenet (2020)
WEAK STORYTELLING BUT VISUALLY SATISFIYING
Tenet may be the most anticipated high budget movie of 2020. However, as we see both in the critics reviews and the box office gross, the film is quite a failure.
The obvious reason of this is the pointless structure of events. The audience cannot conmect with any characher and besides they dont understand the real meaning of all the action.
Actually, the main characters always explain all the scientifique stuff such as they do to a child. Despite this, the whole action and the non-stop talkings mean nothing to the audience. In other words, the storytelling was simply weak.
And sometimes you don't even understand the rapid talks between the characters such as it happened in the Michael Caine scene.
Visually, Nolan did a great job again that's for sure but in general the movie was a disappointment (for a Nolan movie of course).
Kasaba (1997)
ONE OF THE MOST REALISTIC MOVIES I'VE EVER SEEN
As we know, this is the first full length movie of Nuri Bilge Ceylan. It's clear to say that now he improved himself in his vision of art and filmmaking. However, Kasaba is a really powerful movie which has many various layers in it.
In general, the movie is not a combine of a series of events. And in theory, it is only a family story which lives in a small town. But practically, the story narrates the life itself, in an existential way.
The cast contains many people from Nuri Bilge's family such as his father, mather and niece.
And i found out later that the niece, Mehmet Emin Toprak has tragically passed away as a 28 years old in a car accident, so his dialogue scenes about life seemed more real to me now.
In a basic order: the small town classroom scene, the child and the (tortured) animals scenes and the family's final talk scene in the forest were really memorable.
Thank you NBC, for one of the most realistic movies i've ever seen.
Ahlat Agaci (2018)
A POWERFUL STORYTELLING AS ALWAYS BY NBC
Nuri Bilge Ceylan aka NBC, shows us one of his best directing performances again. The angles and the classic nbc photograph-like scenes are incredible as usual. And also the places are very unique too, that's mostly because of this beautiful fact: in real life, nbc spent his childhood in canakkale such as the main character did.
Besides, the whole story might seem to be around the main character (dogu demirkol) but the side cast was also very effective, except serkan keskin, cause he mostly exaggerated his way of act as always.
The main theme of the story narrates a unique bond between a son and a father. But in general, it focused on dogu demirkol's performance which was great. And in fact, he may have the best performance in the movie.
The length of the film might seem too much before you watched the movie, however when you start to watch, it really have its fluency for sure. And we can say that it is one of the most fluent nbc films that he ever made.
Just watch it, i really recommend it, especially for young turkish men.
(500) Days of Summer (2009)
This Is Not a Love Story, This Is a Modern Masterpiece.
500 Days of Summer is a complete modern classic. The fluent story, the acting and the chemistry between Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are exceptional.
Also the director, Marc Webb was a music video director before this first movie he made. He directed a lot of emo band's videos like My Chemical Romance and AFI which he gained so much experience from using music in a video. That's why, 500 Days also look like a very long music video with its 1:30 hour time and its largely usage of the soundtrack album. This perfect album is full of modern and classic indie bands with quality.
The storytelling is absolutely adorable. If you are a man, you can relate yourself with Tom and love (and hate) Summer. And if you are a woman, well, i don't know lol.
In my opinion, the most important thing of a work of art is the ability to make you watch / listen / read again. If you like a song, you listen to it once again, right? And i really love that movie which make me watch over and over again.
Just like the storyteller said in the movie: This is not a love story. So aware of this beautiful truth and enjoy it!
