Mr. Wrong (1996)
Absolutely Terrible, NOT black comedy people!
Let me start by saying that the only reason I gave this movie a 2 was because Ellen is awesome.
But really the movie itself deserves a 1, if not a 0. Let me address the defense that this is a "black comedy": Definition of black comedy: "Black comedy or dark comedy is a sub-genre of comedy and satire in which topics and events that are usually regarded as taboo, are treated in an unusually humorous or satirical manner while retaining their seriousness. The intent of black comedy, therefore, is often for the audience to experience both laughter and discomfort, sometimes even simultaneously."
I did not at any point experience laughter during this movie, except while laughing at how terrible it is. Perhaps one could argue that the topic of stalking is the element of black comedy here, but in no way does this movie, with its "madcap" soundtrack and completely horrible script, "retain its seriousness."
If you want a black comedy, then go watch "Death to Smoochy," or even better, Todd Solondz's brilliant "Happiness." Don't watch this dreck.
Also, the scene where she is supposedly high on LSD (oft-named by this movie's necessarily idiotic supporters as one of it's funniest) is only funny because the filmmakers so clearly have no idea what it is like to be on hallucinogens.
If you absolutely must watch this, get drunk during it so that at the end, it seems funny rather than infuriating that you just wasted two hours of your life.
Marie Antoinette (2006)
A Disappointment
This movie is visually stunning but that's about all there is to recommend it. The soundtrack works really well in some parts but totally misses the mark in others. It is entirely self indulgent and BORING, much like the way Marie Antoinette comes across as portrayed by the ever-snaggletoothed Kirsten Dunst. It simply drags on and on and totally trivializes the historical events it portrays. A rare miss from the talented Sofia Coppola. I would have liked to leave it at that but IMDb has some ridiculous policy that reviews have to be 10 lines long. No wonder the other reviews I read prattled on so much. The bottom line is that this movie is boring. That's really all you need to know. Enough lines yet, IMDb?
Berserker (2004)
Worst/Best movie ever
Let's begin by stating that this movie is absolutely god-awful.
That said, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. There is something to be said for the comedy of an insanely horrible movie. The plot? Nonsensical. The acting? Melodramatic/pornographic. The list goes on. But this doesn't change the fact that bad movies are funny.
I almost want to compare it to "Young Van Helsing", but this movie is even sadder because it's clear that some amount of money was spent on it, and someone thought it was a serious film effort, whereas with YVH, the budget's about $50, and I can't be sure it's meant to be serious.
Anyway, don't watch this movie alone, but with friends it's a great time to make fun of.
