Father Brown: The Quill of Osric (2024)
Would not watch if not for Mark Williams
I love Father Brown, and I keep watching this show because of how good it used to be.
But so much of the acting has gone downhill. The story and mysteries aren't as intriguing either. The culprit in this episode- well I found her acting hard to watch. Also, I like the Brenda character in theory but the actress isn't very good. Or maybe her lines or poorly written, I'm not sure. If not for the remarkable Mark Williams, and the fact that his character is the same as it's been from the beginning, I would have given up on this show a long time ago. I did find the premise of this episode fun, at least. A couple of attacks at a literary crime festival.
I'll keep watching FB in the hopes of seeing Lady F and Flambeau from time to time. I dearly miss Sid and Mrs McCarthy's characters, but maybe they will make some cameo appearances like inspector Valentine did.
Abbott Elementary: Career Day Part 1 (2024)
Oh no! Abbott's not funny anymore
My son and I were excited for the start of season 3. We love the characters in the show! All so colorful and funny. Even the 'straight' characters (opposite of comic relief essentially) like Gregory and Janine are funny in their own way.
Unfortunately the whole tone of the show has changed and it's just not funny to us like the first 2 seasons. The Gregory/Janine romance just makes the story messy now and detracts from the comedy. Ava and Mr Johnson aren't hilarious like they used to be. Mellisa lost her scary, but funny, edge. Jacob isn't corny anymore, just goofy.
We're about 5 episodes in and so disappointed. It's not NOT good, but in comparison to the first 2 seasons it's just not funny. We will keep watching in the hopes that it turns around.
Resident Alien: Old Friends (2022)
Still fun but I wish the mayor and his wife were gone
This show is funny and I love Alan T. I just find the major and his wife's character more and more pathetic, self involved and annoying! The other characters are funny even if they are annoying or stupid. Like the sheriff and deputy- he can be obnoxious but he's also hilarious and the deputy's character balances him. Darcy can be pathetic at times but hilarious and also bad ass. But the mayor and his wife- I find them insufferable and I hate that they feature more in this season. Wish I was more articulate but I really just left this review as a venting point on how much my son and I hate the mayor and his wife!
The Sister (2020)
Don't listen to negative reviews!
This mini series had a combination of mystery, suspense and aspects of a psychological thriller with a hint of the paranormal all in one. My favorite character was Bob- I've only seen that actor in a few things that I can recall, but I've enjoyed him every time. I was so anticipating the conclusion that I ended up watching the four episodes in one evening. I enjoyed the show overall and I'm glad I watched it. However there was a bit too much skipping around thru the three time periods in which this show takes place for my taste. Every once in a while I found the back flashes too jarring and a little confusing. Some also felt a little unnecessary, or maybe it's that the timing was off in the placement? Can't quite put my finger on it.
Also, I rather grew to dislike the main character, Nathan. I kept waiting to see if his character would redeem himself and his actions, but he just kept digging his hole deeper. I have to say though that as much as I always want to like or identify with the main character in some way- sometimes it's a nice surprise when a main protagonist turns into more of a 'villain' than a 'hero'. Of course this is a personal view of Nathan and what I took away from the character. I hope anyone who's a fan of the genre/genres will watch and decide for themselves!
