Super 8 (2011)
Super 8... worst movie of this year !!!
SPOILER ALERT ALL OVER This is a movie I wanted to see. I am regretful. Premise sound good: A bunch of kids, doing a home made movie witness a train wreck which eventually will unfold a mystery. Movie starts well but quickly wears his charm out. Abrams use - and abuse of - all the frights and startles written in the "scary movie" book while he tries - in vain - to create some suspense in his own screenplay. Because screenplay is where the big problem lies... There is no background story to explain the main characters interaction, much less their parents. In top of that the creature's story is also severely under developed and we have to settle to some takes showing it trapped in some kid of laboratory taken out of a 50's B movie. We will not know how the thing crashed its ship, how these inept military guys were able to keep it trapped, how Dr. Woodward was able to know the exact route of the train - and don't tell me is telepathic connection. Also how is possible that this derailment takes about two minutes in screen - do these guys know anything about basic physics ? - but most of all: HOW IS POSSIBLE DR WOODWARD SURVIVES A FULL FRONTAL CRASH AGAINST A TRAIN WITH HALF OF HIS TRUCK'S CAB AND JUST MINOR INJURIES ?
I also will not say anything about the military showing in the scene just two minutes after the crash happened - great transportation - or about the late appearance of the creature, or the guns firing it selves or about the creature killing everybody but the main character (oh !...telepathy). But please somebody explain why this "mystery" movie is considered a Spielberg homage or why has 7.5 at IMDb... The only mystery for me is how I was fooled to watch this stupid piece of crap.
El Estudiante (2009)
Worst use of film, since my wedding video !!!
Highly recommended by some people I really respect I went to see this movie. The main argument behind the recommendation was "the message" this movie delivers. After 90 minutes of excruciating pain, I can tell you: the message are bad news. This movie takes back Mexican Cinema more than 40 years - at least- and it looks like the movie was made right in the 60's, along with some Mexican Marga Lopez' classics such as La Edad de la Inocencia or La sombra de los hijos. With a cast of unknown actors -just three recognizable faces - and a generic soapy theme, it is pretty hard to expect great deliverance and quality in acting, yet the amateurish use of cameras and obvious lack of direction results in a total fiasco. However, the main problem here is the screenplay that reduces Don Quixote novel to mere phrases or quotes recited with childish style by the actors. The interaction between the old character and his much younger counterparts is never truly developed and ends up being totally unreal and not believable - not to mention the lack of modern language that clearly sets this movie as an anachronism. Trust me there is no college educated Mexican young person who speaks like the characters or who does not know Jose Alfredo Jimenez - for Christ sake , being Mexican and not knowing him is a blasphemy !!
Probably the decision of not including crude language has to do with the intention of creating a "family movie with high values", well if that was the intention, the result is a pamphlet or a brochure ...mere propaganda, and as you know...propaganda is no good.
On the other hand if the goal was to make a movie about bonding, friendship and the continuous learning despite the generations gap, they may had take some lessons from other sources. Grand Torino or UP rings a bell, don't they ???
The Departed (2006)
spoiler warning ...what a piece of c....
Blame it on me. Probably too many years of going to the movies makes me skeptical or cynical, but to tell you the truth, I can not tolerate the ending of The Departed. What originally was made a movie about two individuals that begins to emphasize with their natural enemies because of their interaction with their surrounding environment is transformed thanks to Hollywood in a very potent movie about fatality and no honor among crooks. And the movie was absolutely marvelous until the last three minutes
That ending,..that freaking ending. Damon leaving the elevator and the dog that dodges him, Whalberg there to kill the "bad guy" and the damn rat on the window. Damn !!! Why not to finish the movie -like the original - with the ceremony of the deceased DiCaprio ? Why to kill the bad guy ? Whay they did that if not of because the "moralistic Bushian" way of life ?. Why not to understand that evil wins a lot of games ?
what a way to trash a movie !!! Imagine this, you are preparing a delicious dish at your house... and at the very end you add three spoons of crap (s.it) would you still eat it ? would you still think of that as a great dish ? do not fool yourselves. Sex without orgasm is plain crap. This movie was ecstatic and missed the point at the very end.
Días de combate (1982)
First Mexican Detective in Mexico
You Better read the book. Although most of the personages are well defined, the film fails when trying to catch the essence of which it is the world that inhabits Héctor Belascoarán Shayne. Son of Irish of folk singer and of a Spanish anarchist and living in Mexico....he finds himself like ghost lost in the jungle of the Mexican capital. He infect us with his melancholy, sadness and deep passion by Mexico while he tries to stop at the same time a Serial Killer. He becomes in the process the architect of his own conscience. Unfortunately this does not reach to being reflected in this film, that if it nevertheless leaves a visual image us of who is the definitive Héctor. This role was interpreted later by two actors (Alexander Camacho and Sergio Goyri) but without being able to erase the memory of Armendáriz as Héctor Belascoarán Shayne
Superman Returns (2006)
This Superman does not fly
I have never been a Superman fan. Sorry, but I can not relate to him just because I was born and raised on Planet Earth and to get the Super attached is something I will never get. Yet, when Warner delivered their 1978 movie, I really enjoyed the film. So I did in 1980 with the second part, which by the way is one of those rare pictures that are better than the first one. I was 15 at that time. 26 years later, you would expect an improvement, don't you ? I mean, Christopher Reeve was not exactly the Actor of his generation, in fact, it seemed that his acting coach was a brick from the Brooklyn Bridge. Well Brandon Routh, makes Christopher Reeve look like Marlon Brando compared to him.He is plain, and boring and his acting on screen seems as fake as his eye contacts. Also Bosworth is disappointing as Lois Lane, and certainly you would expect more from Kevin Spacey but his Lex Luthor is more dull and never seems threatening or capable to inspire fear in any sense. It looks like a Hackman's Luthor decaffeinated. The main problem is that Singer tried too hard to have this superman more humanized, and yet as a Mesias (Brando's voice over: I sent you my only son to guide them etc.... )Even in some takes he resembles a cross (Sam Reimi already did that with Spidey in part II with much better results). The special effects also are not astounding at all. The aerial sequence in King Kong was far better done, than any on this movie, and also any Harry Potter/Narnia /Lord of the Rings has more creative effects also. The only two aspects that are outstanding in this movie are the main Titles and the Music. Taken directly from the 78 movie, they are the only reason why I gave this flop its two stars.
King Kong (2005)
King Kong reviewed in six words
Masterpiece. Spielberg is DEAD. Jackson LIVES !!!!! Since the guidelines ask for me to continue for more, until 10 lines are filled, I will keep writing. However my opening statement does say all. To make a movie based in a classic is hard. To make it and stretch it to three hours without boring the audience is an accomplishment. The previous owner of the title of mr. entertainment managed to bore us to death in A.I. and his best movie is catch me if you can. Here Jackson takes the torch and for what I can saw in Frighteners, LOR and now he will keep it burning. The aerial sequences in the empire state are the best filmed - aerial - in the last two decedes, and you can help it. Youcare for the big ape when he slips from the building. This is how to mix romance, comedy and action should be done. Eat your heart Steve.
