Please spare yourselves the pain
27 July 2019
I will sit through any movie once I've started it. I want to find some redeeming quality in the film. Maybe im stubborn, or I just don't like to leave things unfinished. I once had to fast forward through a particularly bad film just to get to the conclusion. This is the first time I can remember that ive actually turned a movie off. I made it about 20 minutes. Couldn't bear any more.

If you hate this movie you probably never watched the show

I loved it. It had all the overdramatic rescues, slowmo, and ridiculousness of the show. They literally say the same in the movie at least twice. The actors were all great in their roles. Obviously Dwayne was ever charismatic as was the original Mitch Buchannon. The Captain Thorpe character wasn't my favorite but that's fine. the rest of it played pretty well to the reference material with a little extra humor for the new kids. It was a lot of cheesy fun. If you want more than that you are in the wrong place.

Started strong, ended ordinary.

The guy that said its "easily the best video game adaptation to date" is either working for them or an idiot. Rob Riggle is awesome. Basically the opening scene is great like a perfect mirror of the gameplay. They build on the building weapons theme. but then it turns into a typical government conspiracy zombie disaster. Feels a lot like Doomsday (2008). Nothing particularly special.

Very good. I would have been fine with it going even longer

Even at two hours I felt it was just a little too rushed. I understand the caution with making it run too long but it felt like an extra half hour would have gone a long way to show the significant length of time the characters spent in such solitude. They did a good job of it but a few extra minutes could have been well spent to create the feeling of loneliness first of just Jim and then both Jim and Aurora. I did feel the chemistry between Chris Pratt as Jim and Jennifer Lawrence as Aurora was extremely convincing. Both actors put forth very convincing and enjoyable performances, not to mention an excellent however brief appearance by Laurence Fishburne. The tension was well played throughout the film both between the characters and with external events. However some of the emotion seemed to be cut short where I felt it needed to linger just a little longer in several scenes and series of scenes particularly later in the film. They also needed to spend just a little more time with the two of them at the end. It felt like they just ran out of time filming and had to end it right away. Overall a very enjoyable film that could even be extended further. This could possibly make for a good directors cut in the future.

No blockbuster but it gets the point across

You can tell they are really trying to get this right. They do a commendable job of it but it is not quite all there. It does come off a little like the trashy version of the Vet drama you are looking for. They want to tell the story of the modern vet returning home and all the issues that can come with that that they don't necessarily want to talk about. Especially one specific issue that doesn't get a lot of attention. Obviously they mix in some other, sort of unrealistic, plot points for added tension. I cant really hold that against them. While this is certainly not the great war drama of our time, I think it does a good job of showing some of the less obvious damage vets deal with after they get home. Its certainly not the greatest veteran drama but its definitely worth a watch.

Its fun if you let it be fun

I understand why people might be down on this movie but I really enjoyed it. It had the right elements of the great party comedy. Great cast. Great party. Maybe I really enjoyed it because I was drinking along with it and wanted it to be good. But is that such a problem to have? It did feel like it couldn't quite hit the punchline as well as I wanted it to. But if you want to have fun with it you will.

Is Diana just the Amazon equivalent of a teenager?
18 February 2018
I was looking forward to a badass female lead superhero movie. For the most part that's what I got. Unfortunately for most of the movie it felt like Diana was just acting like a stubborn teenager that knows better than everyone else, ignoring even seemingly simple requests by her supposed partner in action. I get that some of this may have been on purpose to show her naivety to how this world behaves or her vigor to help make a positive difference or the idea that I don't need a man to tell me what to do, or maybe just played for comedic effect to some extent. I don't know. But it just put me off a little. Like this guy is clearly trying to help, can you just listen to him for one second? Also really played up the romance angle more than I expected for what I thought was supposed to showcase the strong independent woman. By the end of the film she seems to have grown and hopefully will be less irritating in the future. Rant finished. Overall I thought it had good story, acting, action and effects.
