Prey (I) (2022)

A very solid action movie
26 August 2023
Great cast, great plot, great scenery, great action sequences. My only wish would be that the lead actreess could be a bit more rugged. But other than that this film gets you. Hard. Acting is cool and original. Cinematography is top notch. This movie just keeps you guessing. I went in it with low expectations but I wasn't expecting it to be so good. I'm looking forward to more movies from the lead actors. Thumbs up to the script writers, the producers and the entire crew. Looking forward to more of their work. And in closing I have to say: If this movie was filmed before the original predator then it would have been a huge blockbuster. Nice comeback.

Thor Love and Thunder does have a villain and it's ...

Warning: Spoilers
... the team of producers who are truly 'unworthy'.

The script-writers and Russell Crowe went to tremendous lengths in terms of character study and Hellenic mythology to make Zeus sound like a ... greekie cab driver.

Well done Disney. This was the last straw. Never going to pay for any of your garbage ever again. Anything with the Disney sign on it is a red flag for me from now on.

Not for the faint of heart

Just came back from the cinema. I don't want to spoil details for you. Suffice it to say this is not the typical hollywood/political-correctness movie. It's gorish to the point that it will make you feel uncomfortable at times. You need to have the appropriate "taste" for it.

To put it in a different way: If you are planning to see this movie on a date you're taking a gamble. Personally I'm looking forward to revisiting this movie multiple times. It's a lot to take in.

Acting is 9.8/10. Cinematography is 11/10 and blasts it out of the ballpark - viewing this in cinema is gripping and pulling you in total immersion. Script is 10/10 for me.

This is a classic movie that is bound to have a cult following. Love it.

Let down

The movie had such high potential: Mostly strong cast, good cgi. But the scriptwriters just ruined everything. The whole movie feels like a loosely connected powerpoint presentation with no cohesion. Your IQ will tank just by having to watch this movie. It's meant for kids below the age of 10. The previous installment of this series was decent - for whatever reason the producers made a mess of things with the script. No script-writer would could be proud for this abomination.

Solid Psychological Drama

It's tough being a policeman when you are exposed time and over again to the horror. The movie makes a good point that the line between what is good and what is just gets blurry and the protocol doesn't cut it when human lives are at stake. Some idealists might not like the ending. I can't blame them nor I can blame myself for liking it. I'm a pragmatist.

Contrary to most whiners this is episode can hold its ground

I was initially conflicted about whether I should go see this episode after cold-shower that episode VII was. I went in the theater with very low expectations. I have to say that the movie faired better than I expected. Acting is superb with Fisher and Hamill showing the younger folks how it's done. My gripes have to do with Adam Driver who really has remarkable potential but neither the plot nor the directing allows his real talents to shine through, leaving you with a 'meh' feeling sinking like a rock in your stomach. The other gripe I have from this movie is its over-use of comedy. I think that they overdid it in this regard in a superficial way, un-becoming for a star wars movie. Apart from these 2 dark spots the movie is engaging in every other way. If you want to throw a rotten tomato or two throw it at episode VII. Episode VIII is getting things back on track. Thumbs up (yes even to you Adam Driver).

"It's not a measure of health to be well adjusted in a profoundly sick society."

If there is one message that the movie is trying to communicate to its audience it's the above title.

There are of course reviews that point out the alleged likeliness of this film with movies like "Wall Street" usually concluding "that there is nothing new to see". Under closer examination however, any similarities between the two films go only skin-deep and can only be considered superficial. There are fundamental differences between these two movies because they represent two different approaches and evaluations of the same issue and which one hits home is up for you to decide. And thats because "Wall Street" focuses on the seducing power and aloofness of a loan shark that acts as a money fueled lone wolf, as opposed to the naiveness of a young rookie which is slow to disillusion himself about his own actions while he's getting carried away (but eventually comes out on top etc). The caveat of such scenarios is in that they constantly, silently and almost purposefully marginalize the inherent, all consuming, self-perpetuating environment and ill-conceived culture that money in and all by itself creates, even for "the winners of the game".

La Capital on the other hand has none of the above shortcomings when it comes to describing the black hole lurking deep into the very foundations of our culture: Money. It's a film about attitudes and value systems across the board, with a scenario that's free of cliché good-guy-vs-bad-guy dualities and with the courageous nerve to "pull no punches" sparing its viewer from having to suffer another stereotypical "happy ending" made-in-Hollywood (has elements of it but still its not "right into your face").

Finally, I would just like to add that, all in all, Mr Gavras is right in that there will come a time in the not so distant future ... A time in which, among other things, our western culture will look back to the contemporary intellectuals and artists to examine which ones did of their duty in terms of articulating the public opinion, bringing the spotlight on the machinations of the financial system and the corrosive effects that money in and all by itself has both on our societies as a whole, in our own micro-worlds and those of our acquaintances as well as our own fragile, individual psyches. And when this time comes I think that the memory of both Mr Gavras and those that stood by him in this and similar projects will be, if not exalted, then at the very least spared from the outrage of the dystopian poverty-striken masses.
