Creation (2009)
Very powerful scenes, good performance of the main actor, a great film!
I enjoyed this film. I am a biologist, and I found a vision of Darwin's life that I didn't expected. For me, the most interesting point of this movie is the focus on Darwin's feelings during just a segment of his life. I think that the main idea behind the whole story is Darwin's loneliness. Loneliness in the world of science, in the society, in marriage. Very powerful scenes. The face of Darwin's when Huxley says "you kill God" shows his inner conflicts; also, in my view, T. Huxley (T. Jones: excellent!) attitude suggest some encrypted envy! Something very difficult to transmit in a few seconds of film, but achieved! The scene with pigeons is very powerful too and with more than the direct meaning. In fact, many scenes have a second meaning, which make this film very rich. I did not expected historical accuracy, just a good film based on real events. So, I find something much better than what I expected. Bettany's performance was great. I only regret that Annie Darwin dead was shown. The absence would be more powerful. For this reason this film is not a 10. About the title: I think that simply refers to the creation of Darwin's book, so it is entirely correct and reflects in just a word the contents of the story. See a reproduction of a portrait of C. Darwin made by George Richmond in 1840. Paul Bettany in this film is really alike to the image in this portrait! I regret there is many reviews of this films saying that it did not reflect reality. I think that this is not the goal of art. Also, I regret that many reviewers say that this film is boring. I think that "Creation" is far away from boring. I will keep this film in my mind forever.
Astro Boy (2009)
Disgusting ideas behind good animation.
I did not see "Astroboy" old animated TV series. So, I had no idea before seeing this film together with my 5 years old son. Although he liked it, I was really disappointed. In "Astroboy", a father first raises his son as a robot, but at that time he is never present (see scene with the dialog between the child and a hologram of his father within the car). Later, once the child dies, the father raises a robot trying to get a child instead. A detestable idea. But he persists in raising something not as a child, giving him books totally inadequate for a child. The story is plagued of scenes of torture on a child: Toby confined in a jail with no windows; Toby suffering explosions of missiles on him; Toby rejected by Dr. Tenma, his father, with rude, direct words; Toby have to fight with an iron monster... and so on. What about the children on the surface? (the third world?)(SPOILER) When Cora finally find her parents, they just say "where were you?" That's all? What is the concept of family or parenthood for the director/writer? In some part, the "revolutionary" robots from the surface tease on the Asimov's laws on robotics. It was very offensive for a talented author as Asimov and their readers as me. Even the pathetic characters of these robots (what they say and how they look) seems a contempt for any revolution. For me, reconciliation between Astroboy and Dr. Temna was a sad ending, not a happy ending. But I could find a positive point in the story: only other children were able to find a human being in a robot seeming a child, not the adults. At less something with hope! (SPOILER) Finally, there are a lot of things too similar to other films: mountains of discharged items from civilization as in "WallE", the very ending with an unexpected alien as in "The Incredibles", the entire process of creation of Astro as in "Frankenstein", the design of the army as in "Star Wars", many resemblances with "The Iron Giant"
Too many coincidences. Good animation technique in fact. But digital animation is not enough to make a good film.
Don't Look Up (2009)
Comments on specific details of this movie (vg., scenarios)
I just want to highlight the extremely low quality of the background scenarios. Anyone paid attention to the plastic weeds on the walls? The ivy leaves were as petrified as the walls of the filming set, which was far from realistic. The stone ladder was designed by somebody who knows as much architecture as me. I had to do a real effort to continue seeing this film after the scene in which all the filming crew rush in a total disorder after a death of one of their work partners. People were dying in front of the eyes of others, but nobody was concerned about them! Moreover, they not even try to save their lives in any way. A total lack of sensitivity. I even feel that this is an absolute lack of respect for people suffering from some kind of mental illness and cancer as well. This film deserve to be in the top ten of worst horror films ever.
