Val (2021)
The Val Kilmer you know nothing about
This is one of the hardest films I have ever watched. Kilmer opens himself wide. It is very difficult at times to watch someone who at one time was so full of life, health, and vigor. It is a reality check for all of us. Life is so very fragile! Though hard to sit through at times, it is an amazing documentary. I never knew about THIS Val Kilmer. The one who loves his childhood family, and his wife and children. The "behind the scenes" footage and commentary are very revealing and compelling to the viewer. I daresay no other actor would, or even could, provide such an expose' on his or her life. And at such a vulnerable point in life. His son did an outstanding job in narrating this film. I will reflect on this for days to come. Funny. Sad. Uplifting. Caring. Provocative. There is everything here. Godspeed Val. Thank you for this.
The Plot Against the President (2020)
Worst comedy I've ever seen
BAD! SAD! This is the worst comedy I have ever seen. Try as I might, I could find nothing socially redeeming about this "mockudrama". Simply one of the worst movies ever made. Unbelievable acting, pure schlock. Don't waste your time on this stinker!
Seaspiracy (2021)
New vegetarian here now!
This doc is such an eye opener. It was very hard to watch. If you are able to watch this, and remain unmoved, well ... I was moved enough to stop eating seafood, and then all meats, after watching. There is NO SUCH THING as "sustainable fishing", period. We are emptying our oceans at an alarming rate. I can do my small part to help. Can you? We are creating deserts in the oceans. How sad for our planet. How sad for us.
Ad Astra (2019)
The movie I wanted didn't show up
The most intriguing aspect of this movie, and I wanted MUCH more of it, is the radio/space tower depicted in the early parts of the movie. That was some phenomenal sci fi! Completely unique in every aspect. Now THAT is a movie I wanted to see! However, it was merely a side story to the bigger picture. Which was just not good.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Not bad, certainly not good.
Another one I've seen on TV and stated "I'm glad I didn't go to the theater and see this". At least at home I can pause it for a bathroom or snack break. I cannot remember anything memorable at all. Clooney's brooding and bleakness is about it. Skip this!
The Vanished (2020)
Not worth the time, even fast-fwd to the end...
I fumbled through the first 30 to 45 minutes, then came here to look at the reviews. Especially the "hang on till the plot twist at the end" type review. So I fast-forwarded some scenes, watched a few seconds of dialogue, then FF again ... until the end. So Stupid. Worse than "it was all a dream", which is what I was expecting. This was horrible acting and painful to watch. Even getting right to the ending. Stupid.
Flack (2019)
One word :
Brilliant! ... ok, several words. Still brilliant! Smart, intelligent, funny, witty, ... outstanding! I'm an instant fan from E1 ! Pacquin is a shining star. She really had matured since her X-Men days.
The 2nd (2020)
One of the worst!
Forget any semblance of plot. The acting is so horribly contrived, you can't suspend belief enough to even try and watch! Bot a single decent actor, Phillippe included. There is not a single character for the viewer to care about. The "bad guys", particularly the sunglassed Agent Smith vis a vis The Matrix wannabe, squirms around, grimaces and annoyed, like he has fire ants biting him. This STINKER gets 2* only because it was, at the absolute horrible least, SOMETHING to watch!
Look Away (2018)
Had to turn it off. Just, wrong.
What could have been a decent horror movie, turned in to something sexually creepy, and bordering "illegal"? I know the actress is in her mid twenties, but she is playing the part of a 17 year old, "nearly 18", per her father, and two months from her 18th birthday, also stated by her father. Gratuitous nudity, and a "pleasuring" scene of a portrayed "minor" is WRONG. I'm no prude, but this movie should be removed.
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
My new "desert island top 10 movie"
This is a short review. I just watched this movie, and it is my newest Top 10 Desert Island movies. I absolutely loved this!! Everything about it shines! Character development, SiFi, FX, CGI, love interests, ... AWESOME as hell!! I loved it!!
It's Alive (1974)
Scared the SCHITE out of me as a kid!
I just tried to rent this movie on Prime, but it would not play just now. I saw this movie when I was about 11 or 12 years old, in 1974, and it scared the schite out of me! It was one of only a handful of movies I vividly remember as a kid going into my teens. It made a helluva good, or creepy as hell, impression on me to want to see what the fuss was back then! I need to purchase this somehow. Give it credit for special effects that are now so amazing in today's films! That creature was SCARY! :O :O
Furthest Witness (2017)
2 stars only because I didn't change the channel on this stinker!
But loses 8 stars due to poor acting, poor plot (still not sure of what it was about) and poor fight choreography. Non believable characters. Unconvincing relationships. ...Smdh... I really wanted to like it, but it just had nothing to offer. Main bad guy (cant even remember his name, and dont even want to look it up) was trying too hard to portray Mickey Rourke's character from "Sin City". But I'd bet even Rourke would have had a hard time with this script!
FX were awful. Bullet sounds did not correspond to the caliber weapon being fired at the time. Bad timing and execution of blood squibs in body shots. Just made this very hard to watch.
But watch I did. The most painful final 12 minutes of a movie I ever had to bare. I wanted this to end so much so that just kept a literally countdown of minutes left. And this is an hour and 26 minutes of my life I'll never get back.
About Time (2013)
About a love story
Of course we all (perhaps all...) wish there was a way to go back and change something in our lives. Or another's. This movie touches lightly on the paradox of time travel for the traveler's sake. Consequences. Yes, others have attempted this ... i.e., The Butterfly Effect, et al. About Time adds a sweet spin on the concept. I loved my own father and my own brother dearly, and have lost them both, way too soon, years ago. What I would give to go back and change one thing in their lives that would have perhaps gotten them through that fateful day.
Without the sci fi special effects and explosions and CGI to speak of, this movie takes us back innocently. Yes, there are some selfish reasons portrayed initially (who wouldn't do the same?), but he overcomes that to only want to help or better those around him. Ultimately realizing that each day is a new day, and a chance to "change" our future for the better, he gives up the time travel altogether. This is a beautiful movie, and reminiscent of Adam Sandler's "Click".
Live your life today, tomorrow, to its fullest. Don't live to regret what has happened and grow old wishing you could change it. Love and hug and kiss those that mean so much to you. Cherish each day and each person you love. Life is fragile. See this endearing movie. 10/10!
Cam (2018)
Contains spoliers
**SPOILER ALERT** This movie SUCKED. Other than some gratuitous T&A throughout, there is NOTHING about this movie worth watching for! Had I been in a theater, 2hich would have been doubtful to begin with, I would have walked out. I kept waiting for an "AHA!!" moment and never got one. Two stars for the T&A. No stars for the overall trash that is this stinker.
The Mummy (2017)
Worth a rental fee
We had wanted to see this when it hit the big screen, but never did. It was one we relegated to renting.
It doesn't disappoint in being rent-worthy. Being able to spend just 2 bucks, to watch at home, pause and rewind when you need a break, was worth it. ;)
Tom Cruise played his usual character(s), but with a somewhat comic twist. That was not a good fit. The movie should have instead gone with a "darker" tone. What is it with these comedic movie monsters? Sure, add a witty line or comical double entendre', but this was too bland.
Sofia Boutella was gorgeous and striking, and her Mummy portrayal was great. The CGI was done well, especially the "life-sucking" scenes that were used to regenerate her body. Interestingly, I had not seen her before this movie, and we rented "Atomic Blonde" along with this dvd, not knowing she was in both. The two rolls couldn't have been more opposing; she was great in both. She is definitely one to watch for in new releases.
Again, worth the rental of a DVD. Enjoy!
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
So wanted to love this movie
***Spoiler alert***
But it was mediocre at best. I thought, first of all, that Valerian was going to be the name of a planet, not a main character. No biggie. But the film went nowhere for me and my wife. Two 20-something white kids, from Earth no less, are here to save the UNIVERSE? An old and tired cliche' that has done nothing to help this movie.
I was expecting from all the initial hype about this movie, that the CGI was going to be ground-breaking, as was Avatar back in its day.
Nope. Some very not-so-special effects and creatures. As an aside, I love the Guardians of The Galaxy movies, Star Wars (in all their incantations), almost all sci-fi movies, and such. This one just did not leave me wanting more. And only wanting for it to end.
Jack the Giant Killer (2013)
Not the movie released in theaters
I watched this recently on Netflix or Amazon Prime, I forget which. It was absolutely one of the worst movies I had ever seen. I was definitely duped into watching it because I thought it was the one out in theaters recently.
The acting is complete garbage, and I am not going to spend even another minute on this piece of tripe. I will not "advertise" this for the owner/director, even with a One-Star rating that I give it. My wife and I could not even watch it to completion, it was THAT bad.
Many people will be confused by this title. Too bad we can't demand a refund of the rental cost.
You have been warned. I cannot express strongly enough what a POS this is.
