Home Sweet Home Alone (2021)
Not Very Good
I came into this movie with extremely low expectations, and it actually wasn't quite as bad as I thought it might be, but it was still pretty bad.
The movie attempts to stir up the basic Home Alone formula by focusing most of the movie on the Burglars, who in this case are just a down on their luck Suburban Couple who are under the impression that the Kid stole a valuable doll from their house. The problem with this approach, is that it makes the viewer way more sympathetic to these characters, who aren't Eagle Scouts, but lack any actual malice. So it's not fun to watch them get hurt by the traps, it's just sad.
Another problem is that this leaves Max very under-developed and much less the sympathetic underdog that Kevin was. The actor is clearly older, and never really seems scared or worried about his predicament. His Family is also very under-developed. If you blink you'll miss his Dad, it's not clear who everyone in the Family even is. You never see a Cousin or Sibling ever being mean to him or worry about him being home alone. Basically, Max has a little fun in the house, then gets bored, and starts to miss his family a bit. This is like 10 minutes tops of screen time.
So, despite some attempts to shake things up, the only thing this changes from the original is that it makes the Kid less likable and the Burglars more sympathetic, so it's not clear who we're even supposed to be rooting for.
The film did have some funny moments, and I thought the cast did the best they could. But I would skip this one.
Cuck (2019)
Kind of Hilarious, but Misses the Mark
This Movie....
Overall, if you're just a normal person going about your life, you probably won't enjoy this movie. It's very dark, dreary, and depressing. Also, it does seem like the filmmakers took this movie seriously, which is unfortunate, because if they went straight for a black comedy, this would be a 10 star review, without question. And I know aspiring filmmakers are desperate for a 10 star review from an internet random like me.
The fun parts of this movie are that the main character is such an unlikable pathetic loser, that's it's comical to see him just get constantly humiliated and wrecked in the worst ways possible. I give the creators credit for levels at which Ronnie gets owned in this movie. It is very amusing.
The problem is, once you get past the amusement of seeing a ridiculous caricature of an "alt right" (whatever that is) troll getting humiliated (it is very funny at times), it's a pretty empty movie. Ronnie is such an over the top caricature that you can't really take him seriously. I don't doubt that there's people like him out there, but it does honestly seem like a Liberal Wet Dream of how they envision the typical Republican Voter.
That's why this movie has mostly 10 or 1 point reviews of people either saying it's hateful propaganda against White Men, or it's amazing commentary on how much Right Wingers suck!
Overall, it's kind of a hopeless movie. It's basically saying that there's these guys out there who are totally incompetent, angry, hateful, alone, and ready to snap. And that there's not much we can do about it. Which could be funny in a dark comedy, but is kind of depressing in this movie.
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Very Satisfying.
(Minor Spoilers) The story behind Episode III is a story about a film with a ton of weight on it's shoulders. Fan's waited in suspense to see if the climactic prequel could effectively tell the most dramatic story in Star Wars, bring the excitement and wonder back in the series, have the best lightsaber fights ever, and ultimately save the entire Star Wars series. Did Episode III deliver? Could it overcome this burden? Yeah, pretty much.
Episode III is the first prequel to be as good as one of the original Star Wars movies. It was very action packed, it didn't have as much horrible dialogue, and it was first prequel to have decent acting. The best performances come from Ewan McGreggor, Ian McDiarmid, and of course Yoda. Ewan did great as Obi Wan. He seemed like a young Alec Guinness, very honorable, and graceful. He also showed a lot more heart in this movie, making Obi Wan even more endearing. Ian McDiarmid owned as the Emperor. He finally got to be really evil. He was calm and calculating as the chancellor and over the top as the emperor. Yoda, was amazing as always. He's so cool, and such a pimp. Natalie Portman was also better in this film. I actually felt sorry for her at the end. Who would have thought that showing emotion would help a performance. Believe it or not Hayden was a not that bad. I actually LIKED Anakin in the beginning. Naturally I hated him later, but you're supposed to. Samuel Jackson is good too, but I think he was under utilized in the beginning. Point is, this movie had better acting, it's still somewhat lacking, and the writing is still not the greatest, but it was an improvement.
Although the dialogue isn't great, there isn't that much talking in this movie. This is good, because the action is very good. There are five lightsaber fights!!! The fights get better throughout the movie too. The first fight with Count Dooku isn't that great, everyone knows Dooku is getting bounced. Also Obi Wan blows it again. General Grievous versus Obi Wan is a little better. Grievous has four lightsabers! That's cool. However, he isn't worth the hype, he just comes across as a walking garbage disposal. The fight is still cool though, and Obi Wan owns! It restores faith in Obi Wan's abilities. Mace and company versus the Emperor gets better. I thought it was dumb how the emperor kills 3 Jedi in like 2 seconds. However the rest of the fight is pimp, and Mace dominates, until Anakin ruins everything. The last 2 fights are just too amazing for words. The big war scenes are cool, but are not as good as the old school ones. The visuals are better but I had no emotional investment in them. In old movies you felt bad for the random rebel pilots who get bounced, in this movie I could care less about those clones.
As far as the story goes, it is pretty much good. I think Anakin's descent to the Dark Side was a bit rushed. The main problem with the story in this movie is that too much is crammed into this one movie. Nevertheless, the end result delivers.
I really liked this movie. It lived up to my expectations, but unfortunately didn't exceed them. Point is, this movie is worth seeing.
The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005)
This movie made my day
All right, I came into this movie with high expectations. Inspirational sports movies are always good. I kind of like golf. It takes place in a cool time period. And, it stars the only legit Disney Channel kid ever. (I don't care what you think about this film, but I'm sure it's better than "The Perfect Man") Well I must say my expectations were met with flying colors. The film had great acting and a lot of good characters, both comical and evil. Shia did an excellent job as Francis, it was good to see him in a more serious role. I really liked Harry Vardon too, he was very likable and honorable. And Ted Ray (the fat guy) was comical and also just a cool guy. I even liked the little kid!! His potential to be an annoying little Schmiddy was through the roof. But he was actually funny and had a few touching moments with Francis. And then there was that Crazy American Guy, the evil British Nobles, and those creepy top hat guys. The best part about the film was the cinematography. (I think I spelled that wrong). They had awesome golf montages. Some flaws obviously, the movie could have been shorter. Some random scenes didn't seem to go anywhere (like that opera scene). Also shortening the golf scenes might have been better. It would have made the ending more dramatic. Also, I wish they would have done more with the relationship with Francis and his father. Point is, I really liked the movie anyway. It made me happy and that's pretty much the movie's purpose.
