UglyDolls (2019)
Had Potential
It's a real shame that this movie was awful because it really had the potential to be great communist/socialist propaganda. I love a film about the oppressed rising up against their oppressors as much as the next hardcore liberal but even I struggled to focus on the positive messaging the film was trying to convey. The jokes are just less funny versions of jokes we've already seen in better animated movies and I found myself having to skip most of the musical numbers just to save my sanity. Please don't show this to your kids, just let them rewatch Toy Story 3 instead.
Moonlight (2016)
A perfect film
I have put off reviewing this film for years because I'm not sure there's any way I can put into words how I feel about it. It is a perfect film.
And, look, I know that how we experience films is shaped by our own personal experiences and that no two people will see the same film in the same way and everything is subjective and blah blah blah... but Moonlight feels like it transcends all this. It has something to say that everyone can relate to. It has a beauty that even the crusty old men in The Academy couldn't ignore. It is pure cinema - the moving image used to explore the human experience, to present us with one person's life and ask us to see what they see and feel what they feel.
Sure, nothing really 'happens' in Moonlight, but in a way that's what makes it so significant.
To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You (2020)
Not the worst
Yeah, this film is bad. But it's not the worst. It's not going to answer any questions about the universe or trigger any epiphanies about the meaning of life. For a certain audience though, it might resonate on some level... I don't know maybe if you're 14 and you're having guy problems. Or maybe if you've had a bad day and you just want to watch some brainless rubbish.
Even though it's not groundbreaking or revolutionary and the sound track is a bit annoying, the performances are good most of the time and its not completely boring.
Maybe don't add it to the top of your watchlist but also, maybe don't write it off completely.
Grave (2016)
Yikes
This is one of the best horror films I've seen in years, and I'm a vegan.
It works on so many levels, as a coming of age drama, as a bizarre black-comedy, a psychological thriller and a Cronenberg-style gore fest. And the ending messed me up big time.
Raw is a horror film that is genuinely horrifying, that builds slowly and sneaks up on you and it might not be for everyone but if you want proper horror film that will stay with you for weeks, then at least give Raw a try.
Joker (2019)
Meh
This movie isn't shocking. It isn't awful, it isn't amazing. It's okay.
If you're interested in cinematography and want to look at beautifully shot scenes of a grimy city then this film is probably for you. If you want to see a decent performance from a great actor then go ahead and watch. But if you're interested in something wild and ground-breaking and shocking, then I would recommend A Clockwork Orange or Repulsion.
I hate to be the person who gives an Oscar Winning film 4 stars and writes a review saying its 'not all that' but here I am.
Joker is fine. It's a decent way to spend a couple of hours of your life if you have nothing better to do... but that's all.
Nine Lives (2016)
What did I Just Watch??
I'm sorry to have to say this, but Nine Lives is possibly the worst film I have seen in my life. Look, I like cats, I like movies, I like Jennifer Garner. But this movie is bad.
The first half of the film seems to be dedicated to boring the viewer so much that the second half actually seems okay. Its all an illusion of course, the second half of the movie is in fact awful.
Why Nine Lives was made is beyond me. I would recommend watching it for the sole purpose of making you appreciate the genuinely good movies in your life.
Stuart Little 2 (2002)
You Are All Fools
Stuart Little 2 is a masterpiece. Where else can you watch a young mouse come of age in New York City? Where else can you watch the relationship between mouse and bird blossom against the backdrop of a perilous tale of betrayal? Where else can you find a story of family ties that transcend the categories of humans and animals? Nowhere else.
Stuart Little 2 is a unique experience and to rate it any less than 8/10 is criminal.
