Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)
Sad but Fascinating Story
The reason this is so social media focused is that this story has been going around on YouTube and social media for a long time, so there was a heavily build-in audience.
That being said, this was a story that had been bothering me, because I had seen so many YouTube videos and I just couldn't figure it out. This documentary helped me put some stuff together, and it was really interesting.
Yellowjackets (2021)
This is my favorite show now
It's very dark, disturbing and gory. But for me, it's worth all that for how good it is. Not only is it wildly entertaining, it's also very layered. The kind of show where you pick up new things with every watch.
The acting is amazing, the story is amazing, and I love the actors.
Just go in expecting a horror series, not just a survival show. There is plenty of dark comedy as well... some really hilarious moments. I don't know what else to say without giving spoilers... just give it a chance. I am obsessed.
Station Eleven (2021)
Quite Beautiful
First of all, it's a miniseries based on a book I haven't read, but now I want to read it.
It bounces back and forth between two different timelines, about 20 years apart. The main character is an actor in a post-apocalyptic Chicago area. She travels with the "Traveling Symphony" which performs Shakespeare for local communities.
The earlier timeline shows us how everyone ended up where they are.
The show is a little confusing at time and I recommend using Closed Captions.
As for the political agenda other reviewers are claiming, I just don't see it. It's not a political show.
I'm not a big Shakespeare fan and that part of it did not draw me in. But it absolutely works.
The ending is beautiful.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
It's Hilarious
In my opinion, it's the funniest Marvel movie. I was cry-laughing the entire time. I also the whole aesthetic of the film overall. It's one of the silliest of the Marvel movies as well, so if you like them to be more serious then this won't be your favorite.
Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021)
Has Potential
The format is a bit jarring in the beginning because it goes back and forth between the bright, studio-lit sitcom and the bleak crime drama.
Once you get used to it though, it's really interesting.
I'm excited to see what happens in season 2.
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
Missed You, Dexter
Like a visit from an old friend with questionable character. It leans heavily on the old storylines but adds a more updated true crime element, with a famous podcaster showing up in town and inserting her into an investigation.
With Harrison showing up, he joins the local high of high school kids are thrown into the mix, so there's some Gen Z content that I thought made things more interesting.
The atmosphere is very different simply because of the locale. Miami was a major character in the original Dexter, and the local culture seriously impacted the show. The small town of Iron Lake brings a much darker, broodier environment. It's different but it works.
Chucky (2021)
Very Entertaining, Fun, and Dark
If you don't like the Childs Play/Chucky movies, you won't like it. I'd say it most strongly resembles they style of Bride of Chucky. In includes heavy storylines from Bride of Chucky, Curse of Chucky, and Cult of Chucky. In other words, it's silly and fun and weird.
It also adds a new storyline involving young teens and their moronic parents. Also has some style similarities to AHS and even a dash of Stranger Things.
If you like all those things you will probably like this show. I'm into it. I'll probably rewatch it.
Mars Attacks! (1996)
A Classic 90's Satire
This movie came out when evil aliens in movies were all the rage. It's an over-the-top parody of films like Independence Day. Do not go into this expecting anything serious. This is pure absurdist humor and satire. American culture is heavily parodied with people from all walks of life experiencing this alien movie invasion and reacting in different ways. The aliens are hilarious too. Strongly recommend for comedy fans.
Our Idiot Brother (2011)
One of my Favorite "Chill" Comedies
All the characters are hilarious and work so well together. One of my favorite things to watch when ai just want to relax and laugh. The story is super silly but that doesn't really even matter because it's all about the hilarious dialogue. So many great lines. My husband and I quote it at each other all the time and so can you. Enjoy!
Under the Shadow (2016)
A Unique Masterpiece in Horror
Takes place in 1980's Tehran during the Iran/Iraq conflict. A mother and daughter pretty much trapped
In their apartment building, when their building is hit by an Iraqi missile that fails to detonate. This is when things get weird. The main character starts seeing strange behavior with the other people in the building, and her own daughter. It gets really creepy really fast. There is a growing sense of dread that is beautifully conveyed. The acting is excellent.
Note: this is not a war movie. For those of you who don't like war movies (including myself); War is the instigator and the setting but most of the film takes place inside the apartment building.
I strongly recommend this movie for any fans of supernatural horror films. It is well worth reading the subtitles. It is a unique story and the main character is a well-rounded, intelligent person.
I just truly love this film. Last I checked it was still on Netflix. Do yourself a favor and watch it.
And Just Like That... (2021)
I wasn't planning to watch it....
SATC was kind of a comfort/guilty pleasure for me back when the original series was on. I never took it too seriously but I did watch it a lot. I was annoyed by everything that went down with Kim Cattrall and didn't see how they could go on without her.
Once I heard some spoilers about the first episode I decided to watch out of curiosity and I was
immediately sucked right back in. I did not appreciate the early jabs at Samantha and again almost stopped watching.
But it's kinda fascinating to pick right back up and see 3 of them now in their 50's and how things ended up.
As for the "wokeness", I'll agree they laid it on a little thick, especially in the first couple episodes. The original series had some really antiquated ideas about sex and gender and I think they are trying to fix that and also show what it's like now to be in your 50's and trying to keep up with social change. It induces some hard cringes, but apparently it wasn't enough for me
stop watching.
Overall I'm still entertained, and I'm continuing to watch, enjoy, and look forward to it.
EDIT: I have one more comment to add. Che's standup is seriously bad. Like, so bad. They're an interesting character, kind of, but not necessarily funny?
And it just kind of hurts to have Bobby Lee sitting right there who is an ACTUAL COMEDIAN. He is so under-utilized in this show. PLEASE GIVE BOBBY LEE SOME MORE TO WORK WITH. He can add some real comedy to the show, which is seriously lacking.
Le calendrier (2021)
Decent Film, Bad Subtitles
This is a very decent horror movie but it does feel like some stuff got lost in translation. First of all they pretty much did not subtitle any written French words in the movie, and there were kind of a lot. If you know some basic French this might not be an issue but isn't that what subtitles are for? It also just seemed like some lines were not being translated. I can't prove this obviously, but my husband and I both watch plenty of foreign movies with subtitles and don't usually have this issue. It seemed like things were missed.
Wrong Turn (2021)
Better than I Expected
It's an interesting twist on the old concept. Definitely interesting and fun to watch. It's not like the other Wrong Turn movies- they did something different and I think it was more interesting for that.
A.P. Bio (2018)
Hilarious
Some episodes are good and some have me cry-laughing the whole time. It is so deeply hilarious. The characters are great... the students are great. The concept is unique. Bonus points for not taking place in NY or LA or Chicago..... and some of the episodes contain absolutely genius writing with amazing actors.
Oh, and season 4 is epic.
Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made (2018)
Creepy and Disturbing in a Great Way
****SPOILER ALERT****
It seems as though a lot of the negative reviews on this film are directed due to the claim that it was actually a cursed film from the 70's. This was just a gimmick (obviously); everyone should know this by now. When you see the film was made in 2019, you then would know. It's up to you if you want to still watch it and enjoy the story around the film as part of the experience.
I went into this movie fully know the "cursed film" premise was totally fake. So my review is purely on the movie "Antrum" and not the documentarian claim or introduction, which I just thought made it a little more fun.
The thing about the cursed film gimmick is that the movie could stand on its own without. It's a creepy film, and the 70's aesthetic only adds to it.
The unsettling music and overall style of the film make certain parts uncomfortable to watch without doing anything really that shocking.
If you go in expecting a real cursed movie from the 70's, you're going to be be disappointed. It's a creepy 70's style horror film about digging a hole to hell...
Dark Skies (2013)
So underrated
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. In my opinion it is more of a horror movie about aliens than a sci-fi movie. It's almost pure horror and it builds really nicely. There is just enough character development to make it a well-rounded movie. And it's just really creepy in a very fun way.
Community (2009)
One of the Greatest Sitcoms
I have watched this series all the way through several times and it is honestly one of my all-time favorite sitcoms. So unique and self-aware. A little bit weirder than your typical sitcoms at the time it started.
Season 4 is a little weak, due to losing their showrunner for the season. Season 6 which was picked up by the late Yahoo Screen is actually brilliant if you're willing to give it a fair chance.
Go (1999)
A fleeting moment in time
This is the only mainstream movie I've seen that captures late 90's rave culture in the US. It's almost like it never happened. Whether you liked this time or not, it's important for subcultures to be represented historically for future generations.
The movie is also fun and entertaining, and quite weird. The middle segment (Vegas storyline) is by far the weakest link. Could have cut that out and added time to the other 2 stories.
Death to 2020 (2020)
Cathartic
Great watch for New Years Eve. Some really funny parts, in the format of a timeline for 2020 world events. Really breaks down what a surreal and ultimately stupid year we've had.
Leslie Jones and Lisa Kudrow are hilarious.
Makes fun of both sides of US politics as well as UK politics. If you're a trump superfan you might not like it.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
My all-time favorite show
It's not always fun, but it always keeps me fascinated and on the edge of my seat. An incredibly made show
Based on a groundbreaking book by an amazing author.
Saved by the Bell (2020)
Hilarious - Ignore the Haters
Some reviewers really just don't get that this show is satirical of the original, and they don't get the jokes.
It is SO FUNNY and if you want to hate something just because "there's too many remakes" or it's not serious enough, then I guess it's not for you.
The writing is clever and the references to the original series point out how ridiculous the show was in a loving way. I don't know how anyone can honestly give this show 1 star unless they have an agenda and/or haven't watched the show. Or they just don't get it and were looking for less clever cheese. Go watch the big bang theory then... this one isn't for you.
Brave New World (2020)
Really Interesting
It's not exactly like the book. The story is different but well suited for a tv series. It doesn't stray from the main principles of the book. I see many comments saying that the show is overly sexual. The book was overly sexual, especially for its time. I was shocked by it as a teen in the 90's. It's an edgy book, with a really original concept and a really important message. The show expresses it while telling an entertaining story. The philosophy of Huxley is not lost on this series; it's just presented differently.
Overall I think the show is good whether or not you've read the book, although it has definitely inspired me to re-read it.
Hollywood (2020)
Fantasy Series
A lot of people seem confused about how unrealistic this show was. If you can wrap your head around this being a fantasy story about how things could have gone, it's very entertaining.
The Perfection (2018)
Very Entertaining
Doesn't drag on; every moment is exciting. I would recommend just watching it without reading too kuch about it.
Homecoming (2018)
Brilliant and Disturbing
Anyone who gave this one star either dislikes the style or simply didn't understand the show. Seriously, check out the spelling and grammar of the one star reviews. Don't trust them.
If you hate Mr. Robot, then you'll probably hate Homecoming because they have a lot in common.
Personally, I loved the style, and the low-key sense of dread that lingered throughout the season. It's creepy and disturbing, and totally fascinating to watch the mystery unravel. I get bored very easily and I could not stop watching. If all of that sounds intriguing, then give it a chance. I finished the season in one day and it was a day well spent.
