Hammerhead (2005 TV Movie)

Not a bad film for Sci-Fi channel
27 June 2005
First thing comes to mind with this movie was that this idea was done and executed before with Peter Benchley's Creature, but this is the first time the viewer gets to see it done in a way that they would be thinking, "Oh. My. God., their trying to breed this with a human." You see a plot happen before with Deep Blue Sea when they introduce human DNA into a shark, now they introduce a shark DNA into a human. The results of this become something rather nasty.

Jeffory Combs in this one plays a role that made him famous by Stuart Gordon, that being a mad scientist. This takes the mad scientist movie and gives it an even more sinister dimension. Keep in mind this isn't Herbert West, but a doctor who is a little more twisted.

So this takes the Benchly idea and makes it a tad meaner and a lot more violent. You actually get to see the creature eat his victims. I could crack in there with a joke when someone sees this beast, "Uh oh -- someone is about to become dinner." The plot is this. The doctor gets even with his former colleagues by luring them into a fortress with a promising all paid expenses vacation, innocent enough but when they get there he drops a big "F--K YOU" to them by saying they will be on his son's menu.

This is what happens when man plays God and f--ks with nature, nature gets even ten times over. It is tough what to tag this movie in the sense of it being a Science Fiction film or a horror film in itself because it has elements of both in there.

This movie in itself is a nasty horror film in its own right; but I will say it is trying to pick up more on what they did with Creature except in that one the shark had to breed with Great White. The idea with the creature breeding with a human made me go "EEEWWW."

I will go to say this one takes the idea with Benchley's Creature and makes it a little more frighting but this was done before with Benchley's story. Do I recommend this film -- yes if it ever comes to DVD. Watch Creature first so you can compare notes between the two; this one has one thing that makes it a little creepier than Creature -- even the plants are just as nasty as the shark is.

Moral of the story, don't go laughing at a psycho who has a sick idea of making a new species and planning to breed them. The infants in this one are just as freakish as the actual creature is. Even if Sci-Fi channel movies tend to be something viewers like to heckle the crap out of -- I will say they did okay with this one.

I will say Jeffery Combs is a type-casted actor now since he did Re-Aminator; he's well known in the genres of horror and Science Fiction. Still a good actor though for the genres he is best known in. The deaths are gruesome though in this -- the shark just doesn't use his teeth for them either.

coming from a horror writer...
7 October 2004
I rented this movie to get a feel for Perretti's work and must say this is pretty dead on to what Perretti does as a horror writer, but he doesn't write flat out horror like his east coast counter part. I rented this because I wrote a spider story recently called "Bite of the Spider," on the Reality Check Anthology. Peretti is a talented writer and this is a must watch for those who are want to get familiar with his style of writing. Expect a lot of Christian themes in his work, and this is no different in that way.

This is a dark movie, though elements of Peretti appear in the characters and Dr. Wheeling is Perretti's quirk. As Stephen King does cameo in his movies, Peretti plays an active role in this one. I want to try and get a copy of this book, the ending is one to expect when if you are reading Peretti's books. A friend of mine swears by his work. I am surprised this movie got bad reviews, but Mr. Peretti if you are reading this you should bring your masterpiece to life -- titled The Oath or This Present Darkness.

Being what you were able to do with this movie -- it is a good moment to unleash that book onto the big screen. You should be the one writing it instead of a crew of screen writers. I think if Peretti actually wrote the screen play this thing would be a classic in this style of films. This one does have an element of Hitchcock and got to love the use of the spiders in the film.

12 Days of Terror (2004 TV Movie)
Reading the book now...
17 September 2004
I saw this movie and wishing it is on DVD. I have seen all the shark movies that are made except for Open Water and Shark Attack I. I want to see Open Water but this movie is one of those that is damned accurate to the book as well as well to the events of what happened. Dr. Fernicola, thank you for writing this book and providing the movie to go with it. It was about time to see this movie become made. The question of how they managed to make the shark for this one. It is one that rivals Red Water. I am very pleased with this movie; and I used to read a lot of books about shark attacks and had a morbid interest for what happens to people that were attacked by a shark. This movie adds more of a sting to JAWS in the book form. I am reading both books at the same time. This TV movie was one that I will remember for many years to come.

Red Water (2003 TV Movie)
R/C Shark

The shark in the movie was different from JAWS, Deep Blue Sea, Twelve Days of Terror, and the Shark Attack Trilogy. I will go to say they tried to make the shark believable as possible by making it radio controlled shows to how far we've came to these kind of movies. The story isn't that bad but personally I would love to see this become a book. The best three I've mentioned here are JAWS, Deep Blue Sea and Twelve Days of Terror (in fact I got the book of this.) This isn't all a bad movie -- they got some descent actors but the script was something that needed a little work. This was a first time they used a Bull Shark as the shark character in a movie.

They were accurate to how a Bull Shark is in the story, because they do live in fresh water and been recorded to swim up as far as New York or the upper part of the Mississippi. Here in Chicago we have an urban myth of a Bull shark living in Lake Michigan. I won't say as a far to say the movie sucked, but they showed the shark as minimal as possible to create a lot of suspense. If you want fatalities in a shark movie get Deep Blue Sea; that movie is the scariest. Twelve Days of Terror is one that is a true haunter,

but if you want it to make more sense -- read Fernicola's book.

This shark movie was almost in the school as JAWS in the sense of they don't show the shark the whole time; then they show the shark in the beginning like Deep Blue Sea did. But if I was to say which movie to own though, own JAWS, Deep Blue Sea or Twelve Days of Terror but if you find that on DVD get the book first.

Hell of A Movie.

This movie was one of those films one is going to have a lot of fun in the theater. A movie for horror fans to rally around as much as the Sci-Fi fans rally around the Star Wars series. You get your money's worth toward the end of the film. I won't give a way the plot but I saw this movie while I was at a convention, while everyone went to see Manuskript I was having fun in the theater watching this movie. Go see it with the attitude of having fun in the movie theater. Part of the fun is sitting in the theater with the credits as well -- the closing credits on this one look like Steve Summers had a lot of fun with. Steve I raise my beer to this film -- this had the best fight in any horror/sci-fi/Fantasy film. It had some really funny parts in there -- Friar getting some was the most humorous.
