Sex Education: Episode 8 (2023)
A prefect ending
Not sure what everyone is complaining about. I thought this was a great way to wrap up the show. I really didn't like this season overall and had a hard time embracing all the new characters in the short time we had with them, but the ending felt right. It left each character in a natural place of transition, not closure, which is perfect to me because change is constant and closure is an illusion. And as heavy as the themes this show dealt with are, there was always a lightness to it, and it ended exactly as I would have hoped - neither heavy nor frivolous. I couldn't imagine it ending any other way.
Palm Springs (2020)
Hilarious and charming
Probably the most enjoyable romcom I've ever seen.
Stowaway (2021)
Give it a chance
I don't get all the 1-star reviews. Yes, there is a massive plot hole in that they never explain how or why the stowaway got there and how he went undetected before launch, but otherwise it's a really good movie. How he got there isn't even important to the story, really, it's the consequences of his presence that matter. Serious moral dilemma. Slow burn to a very tense finish. And I loved that for once it was a male character that was too weak to be the hero and a woman who did what had to be done, AND that this didn't come off as trying too hard in the name of representation but as appropriate for who those characters were. I'm with the critics on this one, really enjoyed it. Give it a chance.
Grey's Anatomy: Song Beneath the Song (2011)
What the actual...
Ok so I'm watching the previous episode thinking when it ends I'll take a break to study. But then OMG!!! So obviously I need to watch the next episode right? Because it's going to be deep and profound and moving yah? NO. NO IT IS NOT.
This episode is so out of step with the rest of the series I can't even imagine what was going through the minds of the people involved. Surely SOMEONE with some say in the matter must have thought, "You know, this is a terrible idea, this is not Grey's at all..." and yet, here it is, existing in the actual world. I suppose Glee was a big thing in 2011, which is the only reason I can think of that anyone thought this would be a good idea. Good lord.
I had to fast-forward all the singing bits just to get through it. I mean it's not like it was bad singing, not at all, it just did not belong on this show, especially not on what should have been a tense, painful episode. Maybe if they'd done this on a lighter one, as some kind of tongue-in-cheek joke, then maybe it wouldn't have been totally awful. But this? This was totally awful.
Wildflower (2014)
Good movie
I really liked this movie. The main character has some voice over narration which is a bit made-for-TV, but there is also a strong undercurrent of tension which is what really pulled me in. Faith and God are strong themes here, but not so much that it detracts from the story if that's not your cup of tea. It also deals with strong mental illness themes, especially in the realm of trusting your own mind (or not).
It seems at times like the movie can't decide if it's a thriller or a made-for-TV drama. It's quite tense, but there are odd moments that are a bit cheesy. All the same I enjoyed it.
