Scared to Death (1946)
A low budget film that doesn't get enough credit.
Scared to death is about a dead woman that tells the story of how she came to her demise. At the beginning the woman is laying dead on a morgue table. The dead woman then proceeds to narrate her story. In the story the woman feels she is held prisoner, from an event of her past. Through out the film the woman is presented with a dummy head. Hypnotized servants and a house full of characters, trying to calm the poor woman. Meanwhile, a figure in a green mask is stalking about the premises. The woman continues to narrate through flash back scenarios. Until she reaches her demise of being scared to death. This movie might not have gotten great ratings, but I feel it doesn't get enough credit. I mean come on what do you expect for a low budget b movie. I thought the atmosphere of the film was good, with the classic coloring of the film. Also, it had nice mystery feel to it. Its also the first and I believe the only time you see Bela Lugosi in color. If you take the film as a horror movie you will be disappointed. As there are really no horror elements what so ever. But if you take it as a good low budget mystery film it really delivers. I suggest if you happen to find this film take the time to watch it. It's not very long, but I found it to be quite enjoyable. I give Scared to Death a 6 out of 10.
Die Nackte und der Satan (1959)
An underrated, but good classic.
I found the Head to be a very good film, for a low budget horror film. The film starts with a Dr. Abel working on an experiment to keep dead tissue alive for transplants. He succeeds in keeping a dogs head alive for a few months. Abel is then visited by a Dr. Ood, who works with Abel on some experiments. After Abel dies of a heart attack, and Ood takes over cutting off Abel's head and keeping it alive. Ood proceeds to go against Abel's wishes using the experiments for his own desires. Later in the film Ood meets up with an old acquaintance, a stripper named Lily and kills her. He then transplants his beautiful assistant's head(who has a deformed body) on Lily's body. The assistant befriends a young sculptor, who helps her escape the clutches of Dr. Ood. At the conclusion of the film Ood driven with insanity throws himself from the roof of the house. The film is very similar to the movie The Brain that wouldn't die. How ever the Head manages to deliver. It's a bit dull in some parts, but for the most part is very entertaining to watch. The film quality is a bit grainy. The acting is very good for a low budget movie. Horst Frank dose a fantastic job of playing, the raving mad scientist and the other actors are not too bad either. If you are looking for a unique b movie this is right up your ally. I give the Head a 5 out of 10.
The Thirsty Dead (1974)
The Thirsty dead. A unique film.
After watching The Thirsty Dead, I decided to give it a review. What can I say about this low budget B movie, that appeared on the movie pack Pure Terror. First the movie starts out with young women being kid-napped off the streets of Manila, by these druid like people. Then the women are lead through underground sewer tunnels, then they take a canoe ride along a river. And are finally lead through a dense jungle to a mountain. On the mountain a cult, use the women's blood for a youth ritual. When they choose one of the women to join them she refuses. She later convinces the male leader of the cult(with a ridiculously high collared cape) to help them escape. After much challenge and tribulations the three remaining girls escape. This is by no means a gory or gruesome film at all. There is maybe a small drop of blood or two, but nothing to feed the appetite of gore fans. The plot does not have much to it and seems kind of rushed. But the film is kind of colorful and sort of has a nice adventure element to it. Its not the most exciting film, but it is watchable and does capture your attention slightly. I wouldn't recommend buying it unless it appears on one of those 50 in one movies packs. I give this unique danger/adventure a 4 out of 10.
