REPOSESSED! But not impressed!
13 January 2010
In many aspects the film is derivative (Bladerunner like visuals mixed with goth rock music and characters with tragic almost Shakespearean destinies), immature (the plot line doesn't really concentrate on anything specific: is it about the heritage of the founder of Geneco or the relationship between Shilo and her father? (the Surgeon/Repoman), and middle of the road (the violence is too goofy and repetitive to make an impact, there is no real suspense). But it is exciting at times and some songs are energetic and catchy(Testify, Legal Assassin) . It's the king of film that you really want to like because it has the elements to become a cult film. But it's ultimately occasionally cheap and boring for an over-the-top rock opera. It's a fun ride but doesn't leave any food for thought and fails to truly shock or impress...

Great short by the writer of closer!
26 May 2008
This short film was in competition at the Cannes films Festival this year(2008). It follows two teenagers that leave class and meet in the record store looking for the next Buzzcocks single. As there is only one copy left they have to listen to it together. Soon enough it becomes into a very funny and honest discovery of sex. Great actors and nicely done, this is definitely one of the coolest portrayals of first time sex I've ever seen on screen, and was well deserving of the Palme D'Or (that eventually went to the short about the kid with divorced parents who wants a robot called "Megatron" - cute, but come on!). I'm now looking forward to other work by the director Sam Taylor Wood! PS: The film is dedicated to Anthony Minghella's memory

The third UK film
16 January 2008
Although the weakest in the UK trilogy, the film is still a worthy effort in tragic film-making. For some reason it doesn't seem to reach it's full potential, I'm not convinced by the naturalistic cinematography ( a bit to sober and murky ), although it conveyed a sense of realism it made it difficult to follow expressions in the characters (specially because Allen uses few close ups - you tend to need more light to see detail in the wide shots), the ending is a bit abrupt, and the build up isn't as effective as it is in "Match point". Sadly the trilogy ends with a whimper instead of a bang, but it's still Woody Allen at his best in many regards...

sci-fi movie - so bad it's really good
26 April 2007
Another Philip K Dick adaptation hits the theaters. The premise of the film is worthwhile : a man can see 2 minutes ahead in his future and even much longer in the future when it concerns his love (played by Jessica Biel -Beautiful but unconvincing-). Although there are some nice moments the script is definitely not quite there, the performances are poor, the visual style gets ridiculous and everything starts to crumble down when instead of tension you get nervous laughter. A talented script writer and a good director could have made this idea come through...But I guess they didn't foresee the failure.

Next please.

It's all about a frustrated future(SPOILER)
14 September 2004
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILER

In the end it's all about Sandi's treason, Dafoe remembering how she betrayed him, and how he let himself be betrayed (he found the key in her passport and at one time she disappears to get the apartment key...except the key is in the door as Dafoe finds out...he had all the signs that allowed him to realize she was going to betray him, still he didn't do anything) he was seduced in the same way Hiroshi was. He wanted to get away with herself and the money, and all he gets is a stab in the back, she's gone and there's nothing he can do about it except remembering all this in the dark room of New Rose Hotel (the way he remembers the sex scenes reminds me a bit of the character in "Strange Days" that remembers his happy past with the Juliette Lewis character through the mental video engine). Many will find the ending frustrating, and it is frustrating, it's about a man realizing he's been had.

Natural Born Killers with a moral
21 May 2004
This tale of two Irish Brothers that decide to make justice the good old fashion way (blowing the enemy away) is a really good surprise. The script is nicely written, it features Willem Dafoe as the cop that arrives at the place where every massacre by the Boondock Saint's took place. And he tries to understand what happened and the spectator follows him as we are shown what happened as Dafoe speaks. Like in Natural Born Killers by Oliver Stone, the killers become popular by the media, but they're different from Mickey and Mallory and their random acts of violence since they mainly attack the mafia (the bad guys and not just anyone). It's nice to see a movie that provides a "fun" and effective solution against organized crime. It's an impressive debut for Director Troy Duffy, it's original, entertaining and well developed. I'm looking forward to seeing the sequel, and I hope It'll live up to the high standards set by the first one.
