It's Nothing New.
14 October 2016
Let me just say I like RZ. House of 1k Corpses is great, and The Devil's Rejects is one of my all time favorite films, hands down.

What we have in "31" is an attempt to mash together aspects of TDR and his Halloween remake and the result is a confusing, lackluster ride you've already been on.

The problem is you don't feel for any of the characters. There is not one likable character, sans Doom-Head, who is nearly the only bright spot in this movie. Sherry, was better in this film than in past RZ movies, but that isn't saying much.

Another issue I had was how this was hyped up as maniacs dressed up as clowns, which is great, clowns are creepy right? The concept art for the characters especially Sick-Head and Death-Head were amazing. What we got on screen were absolute jokes compared to what we should have gotten. The all but did away with the clown gimmick especially if you look at the concept art.

The opening scene is by far the best in the movie, and honestly one of the best scenes RZ has ever directed. But don't let it fool you, the rest of the movie goes downhill from there.

As you can expect from a RZ movie, it's got that dirty 70's feel, every other line of dialogue is profanity, more so than usual actually, the setting is run of the mill for RZ, and while I could go on, if you have seen a RZ film, than you have already seen a better version of this film.

The score and soundtrack however are delightful in an otherwise grim movie. RZ needs to get back to basics and let someone help him write his scripts. He's got talent and a good eye, but his dialogue is way too over the top and downright cliché at this point. It takes you out of the movie.

This Movies Doesn't CLOWN Around!
6 October 2016
Now this is a terrifying film, with great acting, and even better costume design. The story was actually a lot of fun and the movie moves at an incredible pace. You are into the meat of the movie 5 minutes in and then you begin wondering how they are going to fill another 90 minutes. They filled it nicely, trust me.

This movie doesn't pull any punches which is why it is so terrifying. I am sorry it took me so long to finally watch it. This is a movie where no one is safe. This isn't quite a slasher film, but more of a descent into madness mixed with a bit of the supernatural wrapped around a mythical origin. It is a satisfying ride from start to end and it never slows down.

Good Setting, Bad Everything Else.
5 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has almost nothing going for it, so I will keep this review short and sweet. Yes there are spoilers in this review so be warned now.

The villain, who looks like a member of the Wyatt family if you are familiar with wrestling right now, turns out not really be the villain, and he is a ghost who can turn into a fireball. Yep. It happens.

There are people and kids with this weird birthmark on them that you think you will get a real explanation about. That doesn't happen. Some of the townsfolk seem super natural like but it turns out they are just your run of the mill cliché backwoods people.

The characters are all forgettable and unlikable, the story makes no sense, like for example:

The "villain", Kane, kills the black guy (shocker) first in the most wtf way (he humps the air and it slices the black dude all up... yea), but then goes on to save the other character later in the movie.

While the old creepy burned down prison setting is actually a cool setting, the rest of the movie will make you forget that simply because it is just awful.

Skip this one. Watch Last Shift instead which isn't much better, but it was way more coherent than this garbled up mess.

Oh and another reviewer mentioned the "barely legible end credits", and he's not kidding. I thought my TV was dimming itself down.

Great Flick to Watch With Friends
5 October 2016
Don't come into this film expecting anything groundbreaking, or a movie with something to say. This is dumb slasher movie fun at its best, and it's actually well made little flick based around a pretty sick idea.

The characters are mainly pretty blah, and very cliché, but they embrace that. There is one character who doesn't fit at all and really took away from the fun of the movie. Yea he was a comedy relief character but he failed at it miserably, with his dumb jokes and his lame attempts and physical comedy. You will be able to pick out this character immediately. There was also another pretty goofy character that turns out to be very enjoyable and he serves as a much better plucky comedy relief.

The body count in this film is insane. The acting is sub-par but I expected nothing less. The ending was pretty tongue in cheek but I really liked that.

This is a great film to watch with some friends and some beer. Just go in expecting brainless fun and you won't be disappointed.

Holidays (2016)

You Want Them All To Be Good, But They Aren't.
22 July 2016
Holidays does a few things right, and a lot of things wrong, and because of this, Holidays becomes a one time viewing. I don't ever see myself revisiting this flick intentionally.

Let me start off by talking about some of my favorite parts. Easter was a creepy highlight. But it didn't flesh anything out enough to make you care about it. This is a problem that almost all the parts have.

Christmas was my favorite part but it might just be my Seth Green bias. The ending wasn't as predictable as New Years, Valentine's Day, and Halloween.

Halloween was... stupid. And sadly, after Xmas, Easter, and New Years this might be my fourth favorite. You could tell it was Kevin Smith directing it. That doesn't help in my opinion.

New Years was actually a lot of fun, with 2 awkward characters. You could see the twist coming a mile away but that didn't stop me from enjoying it.

Valentine's, St Paddy's Day, Mother's and Father's Day all were lacking severely with the worst of them being Mother's Day. The ending was just abrupt and confusing. Father's Day had a lot of good build up to an awful ending. Valentine's Day really reminded of something out of Creepshow. Again it was predictable and the characters were way too over the top and just not believable in the slightest.

St. Paddy's Day had a lot of potential as it had a little girl who was seriously creepy. The ending was just bizarre and the whole build up was a "WTF" moment. It went from Day 12 to Day 366 in an instant.

All in all this was not a good anthology movie, nowhere near Creepshow or Trick r' Treat quality.

Robot Chicken + Borat+ The Office= Dead But Delicious!
23 May 2016
I didn't know what to think going into this movie. I had gone in completely blind. Never read a review or even saw a trailer before watching this movie. I was dying 5 minutes into this film.

I love films like this that just have fun, and we seriously need more films in this fashion. It reminded me of Borat throughout the entire movie, it just had a very similar tone and feel to it. But it also felt like the kind of segment you would find in Robot Chicken. Combine that with humor styles from The Office, and you have one hell of a funny mockumentary.

Don't go into this movie expecting a plot, it is not that kind of film, and it's not suppose to be.

Halloween Imagery... Some of The Best!
22 February 2016
This movie is getting a lot of hate and poor scores, and I am failing to see why.

What we got was a movie that could have easily been a feature in "Trick r' Treat" or "Tales of Halloween". This is a good thing. The imagery and setting in this film might have been some of the best I have seen. The colors and backgrounds that almost made it look like a painting were just wonderful to look at it, and there were times where it felt almost Rob Zombie like.

The designs of the "Hellions" were clearly inspired by Sam from Trick r' Treat and I am 100% okay with that. They were dirty and creepy. Buckethead was my favorite design by far.

People are too used too and too spoiled by the jump scare horror movies that are plaguing the industry today, that when they get a movie built around imagery, they are confused.

This isn't the kind of movie that is suppose to scare you. This is the kind of creepy atmospheric Halloween movie that you can watch in the fall to really put you in the Halloween spirit.

Take what you want when it comes to underlying meaning to the movie, I am not going to touch that. What I saw was a wonderfully crafted Halloween movie, and I am happy with that.

I could go on and try to really explain what makes this fun little movie special, but chances are if you have already seen the movie, then what I am trying to convey will fall on deaf ears, but for those who are on the fence about seeing it:

See it. But go into it knowing the story is nothing new and the acting is mediocre (not bad though), and you will get some silly scenes that seem a little out of place when compared to the rest of the movie, but the overall tone and feeling are clear. Fans of TrT and Tales of Halloween are sure to love this flick. From the opening scene, this movie is Halloween-tastic!

BLOOD FOR BABY.
