War Machine (2017)
All over the place, but well done.
The main criticism I see of this movie is that it didn't know what it wanted to be -- but that's what I liked about it. It really gave you a holistic view of Mccrystal's tenure in Afghanistan. Brad Pitt was very good, I feel like some people just hate Brad Pitt because it's a popular opinion. Anthony Michael Hall really shined as Greg Pulver, one of Pitt's right hand men.
It's definitely worth a watch, it's different than most movies about Iraq and Afghanistan.
Show Me a Hero (2015)
Fantastic
If nothing else, it is worth watching the series for the craftsmanship alone. I can't remember the last time I've seen something this well done. This show just oozes talent, David Simon and Paul Haggis make an excellent pair and do a great job creating a realistic of 80s-90s Yonkers. The acting across the board is also phenomenal, it seems every time I watch Oscar Isaac he is playing a totally different character, truly a talent. The show itself may be a little slow, but is totally fascinating and really keeps you interested with all of the different characters. Show me a Hero is not solely a political drama, thinking it is would be fundamentally misunderstanding the show. It's a show about real people and real politicians, which are both hard to come across.
If I Stay (2014)
If I Stayed... the entire movie
I'm a big believer in the fact that movies should be good the entire movie, and the first part of this movie was actually abysmal.
I don't know how this got past production, but somehow this script had enough redeeming qualities to get through. I guess because it was based on a relatively? successful book.
Don't get be wrong, part of this is OK. It does a good job of capturing cute teenage romance, and the two actors are actually adorable and incredibly relatable. But the script is just actually painful. Two star-crossed lovers from different walks of life end up seeing past each other's differences and step out of their own comfort zones and end up in a relationship. "The you you are now is the same you i was in love with yesterday, the same you i'll be in love with tomorrow." Yawn.
There isn't much else to say. If you want to watch a poorly written movie with awkwardly delivered and an incredibly scripty feel - this is a great choice.
