The New Normal: Unplugged (2012)
this episode missed the mark
I agree with the other reviewer of this episode who thought something went wrong with the series in the episode titled Unplugged. The first 7 episodes were amusing and then all of a sudden this one really fell flat. for me there were zero laughs from a ridiculous scrip. I will watch a few more episodes and hope they improve. The acting was OK- Ellen Barkin is always in character as the NaNa - but Justin Bartha just doesn't convince. NeNe Leakes is so funny in this series that she deserves a show of her own. Andrew Rannells is getting better as the series goes along. I think a big problem for the show is comparisons to Modern Family which has superior acting and scripts.
Half a Person (2007)
The worst of the worst
I agree with the only other posted review of this film- IT IS ONE OF THE WORST GAY-THEMED FILMS ever made - if not one of the worst wastes of video tape ever conceived in the history of film. The acting is abysmal- unbelievably amateurish. The film itself has no narrative - no beginning, middle or end. I don't know what is more depressing- the depiction of Sudbury as a bleak mining town or the depiction of the relationships in the film. I lived in Sudbury in the 1970's when people were escaping to Toronto or Alberta- but things have changed a lot in the last 35 years- I found the city all grown up when I returned to visit. People can be miserable in Toronto, New York or Butt-f@@k Iraq - or happy is Sudbury, Ontario.
Angora Ranch (2006)
cute little movie
I agree with the two people who posted positive reviews about this small film. The small budget is obvious and the acting is about on par with a primary school play-let (especially the younger lead and the main character's daddy). These 2 negatives aside, there is a lot left in this film to enjoy: the May/December romance, the non-stereotypical gays, the fluffy ending and the realization that there are gays in the state of Texas and not just hateful bible spewing heteros. Basically I bought the tape because of the cover showing 2 guys kissing and the cute little bunny and I was not disappointed. I rated it 6/10 and am looking forward to other films by this director.
Partners (1982)
this is a comedy
Yes that is right- this movie was released as a comedy not a document on gaylife in the 1980's or whatever- I really get tired of all the reviewers who have to read social relevance into every movie about gays that was ever made. 40 or so years ago there were no gay movies - so at least in 1982 we had gays on the screen. This all being said I would not call this a great movie- it is amusing - mostly from the stereotypical gays and gay-jokes that make up the substance of the movie- I rated it a 4 on the scale- I laughed- I spent a pleasant hour or so watching it on video. Nothing earth-shattering but also nothing all that derogatory- it doesn't deserve all the ranting that I have read about it over the years.
Santo contra el doctor Muerte (1973)
This is for children
I live between Canada and Mexico, I have therefore seen these movies on TV, and my friends have told me that these movies were made specifically for children and dim-witted adults, They lost audience in the 70's and by consequence discontinued, It is funny that in Mexico my friends 'children and grand children rather consider that these movies are more for mentally slow kids.
However every Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning Santo and other less famous'wrestlers movies are on the Mexican cable TV, so that leads me to affirm that they are targeted for children and old adults who used to watch them 40 years ago, one cannot avoid to look at them in order to remember the music, dresses, and B movie films of the 60's .
Too Outrageous! (1987)
a sequel with good intentions
Like most sequels Too Outrageous doesn't live up to the original in any way. It is definitely a failure as a movie. Now that being said there are a few good things to recommend someone giving this movie a view-the drag. Craig Russell has done some of the best "outrageous" drag in the past and a couple of his impersonations are right on while a couple of them are way off the mark. He did about the best Mae West impersonation there was out there- other than the lady herself and in this movie he is right on the mark with Miss West again. Also Peggy Lee. And so is his Judy Garland a fine impersonation. But he is not up to impersonating Tina Turner, Janis Joplin or Eartha Kitt in this movie- those would have been best left to somebody else. What else recommends this movie is the charming relationship between the schizophrenic Liza and Robin- it's rare that the mentally ill are given any realistic treatment in film.
