Good idea but poor execution
21 April 2024
I personally liked the movie but I can not recommend it due to its major flaws. This movie tried to be a Kafka dialog + Tarovsky type of universe + Equilibrium Movie plot all in one go. On paper it is clever but in practice it does not hold up to what it wants to deliver.

The movie is also too long. By minute 50 you already understand the principle but it keeps dragging on for another 50 minutes reiterating what the first part of the movie already defined.

The part that hurt this movie the most is the poor camera handling and sound design. They simply jumped too fast and didn't allow the other sensory stimulants of the viewer to take in the information at its maximum value.

The plot of the movie infers what is fundamentally wrong with society as a whole and it is presented through the lens of people that can't lie. The acting was decent in that remark and they even had a few big named actors in there, but I feel that they were not used for their full acting potential either.

This movie tried to be too ambitious and the production didn't have a good enough team and possibly time to bring it together as it should have truly been. For the casual viewer this will feel as a bad movie that is very jumbled, while for the intended audience this movie will feel mediocre due to it's shortcomings.

Existence (2012)
10/10
Yes I gave it a 10
23 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
You can see in the comments the polarizing opinion between people with low scores and high scores. This movie is not aimed at everyone and is very blunt about it though the absence of the background information.

The name Existence relates to the state of the blissful existing without knowing. The moment the main character understands what is outside the fence is the moment she realizes her existence has come to an end. The family is an anomaly and should not have been behind the safe part of the fence. The parents and the kids do not understand the sacrifice the old man has done for them, and from what horrors he was protecting them from the outside.

There are many facades to this story. The answer of what lies outside the fence is the lost of humanity and hope, a thing that the old man put a lot of effort to teach to the children, in his own imperfect way. Outside the fence, indoctrination and the cultist zealot way of life exterminates the unlucky ones. And for those selected few (the riders) who do not abide by those strict rules will inevitably perish.

As I said, the movie is for a very small niche of the audience that likes to read between the lines and can use their imagination to fill in the gaps that the movie left there intentionally.

This is a mind provoking small tale, and there are a lot of clues left around to put together and understand the bigger puzzle. It's a rare movie with a surprising amount of quality acting. It's not a movie that can be recommended to the general public, but it is a valuable collectible for the connoisseurs.

Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023)
6/10
Review only for season 3
8 March 2023
This rating does not apply to season 1 and 2, in fact those deserve bellow 1 star for the poor quality of the story and character development, but that is besides the point.

So far, Season 3 is more or less mediocre in style, and I do not keep the writers/director at fault for this as I know there are studio challenges and contracts that must be respected.

If this seasons would have been the first in its arc, I would have been more permissive with the score, as most Trek Series (prior to 2010) had accommodating beginnings and then started getting better witch each new season.

More to the point: This season induces a lot of good memories to the previous seasons and legendary characters, but most of those are just references. The majority of the cast they brought back is still in good acting condition (with the exception of picard.. damn, the years haven't been kind to his looks and acting).

The story is interesting but so far a bit predictable and it feels like there are a lot of restrictions to dialog lines somewhat (they still throw sears and talk a bit to casual for a star fleet that should live in a complex civilized future that should be way more mature than our current times). Don't get me wrong, Picard S3 is lightyears ahead of S1 and 2, but a few lightdecades in style behind all the good Treks we are used to.

To be honest I do not even know why they named the show Picard since he (the former captain) mostly just drags along side the show and everyone else takes most of the spotlight. I do see a potential series with his son Jack Crusher, but the harsh reality is that fans are tired of being hyped about new series when we have no idea what unprofessional director they bring behind them and just make all new atrocities over and over as we have been proven time and time again.

Before, we never expected bad performances or a bad story and character developments to such magnitude, because there have always been competent writers and studios in the older treks, but today the Trek world is just a "platform" for these extreme people that wish to promote various messages that they "believe" everyone should accept (they are the true borg).

All I can say is this: we have been lucky to get this Season 3 to be somewhat decent, but I have little hope for this getting better in future series or even repeating this standard level.

A 6/10 is a gentle pat on the back, but this is far from being satisfactory, since previous Treks (prior to 2010) proved they could go way beyond our expectations and really surprise us with amazing feelings that rarely required constant action to keep us interested!

Cringe is what describes this movie
20 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I really wish they didn't make this movie. I understand where they were going with the idea and it was interesting but the execution was miserable.

The plot was basically a bad version of Monsters Inc movie, where the machines discovered that by using the power of fantasy was better than keeping people miserable. This in itself would have been fine, but the way they approached this was insanely bad!

Let me put it this way: if you need a ton of flashbacks to the old movies, that means your movie is not good enough in the first place.

And let's address the elephant in the room. If you are a fan of the trilogy, there is no secret that the "real" world (where they fight the machines) is actually the matrix. So what they call the Matrix is just a simulation within a simulation, and that was the crazy twist that made the original trilogy so epic.

There were a few bits here and there that were nice to watch and the movie is not all that bad, but the story kind of stops making sense with how they try to explain it away. And all of a sudden all this extreme time stopping powers are a thing now and Neo is just a rug that gets tossed around like he has no clue what he is doing in the movie in the first place. And don't get me started with all that Matrix games stuff.

Animatrix was a great expansion on the lore. They could have done so much better in this movie with all of the past material. Sadly they just applied some very cringe things that Hollywood loves these days in all their movies!

In my opinion they should have done a whole new story with new characters and a clever plot instead of just recycling melancholy for the franchise!

This does not really add anything interesting to the lore or to the story and it's just like Terminator, they just beat a dead horse for the attention and money even after the original story has ended so perfectly!

So much failing
6 October 2021
Oh, look at all the fake 10/10 reviews. No surprise there. What the heck were they thinking. This looks like an amateur did this movie. Personally, I do not mind introducing new ideas to MK, but just to recycle the old movie and rewrite the events to fit a friendly family movie is just wack.

Here is an idea: why not make MK 4 and continue where 3 left off with new champions and new enemies that were never presented before. That would make a freaking good plot.

And when it comes to the budget and special effects of this movie, why the heck did they even bother. A homeless guy would do a more decent job than this. We are in 2021 for crying out loud, this effects, music and fight choreography are even subpar to the original movies.

Zero effort, so I will give 1 star for lazy movie making. Also, very cringe dialog! Scoprio speaks Japanese yet he knows English out of the blue for some reason! What a joke!

It's good but it's not Lovecraft
17 August 2020
Don't get me wrong, the 5 star score does not mean I try to put the series down, but this is no where near to the Lovecraft Mythos. On its own, the series is solid and has a good cast and acting and even special effects, but it failed to induce any Lovecraft horror element. The Lovecraft horror is not about the monsters, or about the action, but about the slow descent into madness as the witness takes part to something his/her mind can not comprehend, leaving them mentally scarred and destroyed no matter how strong they are. It is a horrible pain to see and, in part, "The Color out of Space" did achieve it (as silly as that movie turned out to be). If this was directed by someone who did Stephan King movies (Frank Darabont - The Mist) then we would have seen a very deep message painted here. People will say this is the first episode and that I have to wait for things to develop, but this is the problem, the first impression is the most important one to Lovecraft fans, and personally it did not hooked me up. To me, this is just another HBO monster flick that labels itself as Lovecraftian but has nothing solid to its ideology to backup that claim and feels more like a "ScoobyDoo gang in search of Mysteries". By all means, I highly recommend you watch and enjoy this series, just keep in mind that Lovecraft stories are far superior in narrative quality vs. what you get here.

Also, I do not understand why so many users that gave it 10/10 are clearly new accounts made just to review this movie alone. This feels very unauthentic and forced. Even their names are easily recognizable as they are generated with numbers. It feels like the show-runners do not feel confident of their own talent that they have to artificially inflate the score. Personally, I respect the story and the fact that they approach it from a racial point of view and yes, it will divide some viewers on this matter. For me it's an irrelevant topic as I'm here for the cosmic horror (which is severely lacking) and not for political and racial differences that happen in usa.

A rough gem with a deep story
6 August 2020
I do not agree with the previous 2 star review as the user didn't even watch the movie until the end to give a proper description of what the movie is.

It is indeed a very deep layered movie that makes you uncomfortable to watch and does confuse the viewer about what's going on. At first glance it gives the impression of a horror movie when in fact it's a deep psychological trauma that makes you see the story from the eyes of the crazy persona. It is in fact really well crafted this way as the story happens in the background and you have to stitch the clues together until the end. It's not an Inception type of movie as it does answer most of the questions but it is clever done through the use progressively changing colors, sounds, effects and acting performances as the story develops.

The movie is not for everyone and it sure isn't a horror flick. This is more of a Hitchcock type of horror that inflicts fear through disturbed emotions and taboo thoughts (true human creeping horror elements). The actors and production level are spot on.

I highly recommend you to watch this movie if you love psychological movies, especially the ones that put you very up-close and personal to the action. 9/10 as it does leave some unimportant loose ends here and there about secondary characters.

It surprised me!
29 July 2020
I have to admit that the last season really surprised me. At the end of season 2 I had really low hopes for the ending when I saw the whole Parallel Universes thing and I didn't see any way that could make the show good from that moment onward, but when they unraveled the episodes 1 by 1 it was so well crafted that made me realize that the whole act was a complex and deep "chess game".

One thing I really admire about this show is the cast balance. There are a lot of amazing female cast that do not try to compete or overshadow the male cast like in all these new sjw shows we see everywhere these days. The show is a masterpiece and it will go down in history as a classic!

Not the worse shark movie out there!
29 July 2020
Although it did have an interesting approach, the cast just made it insufferable to watch. I have no idea where they found these cardboard actors but they are so unlikable that it makes you wish the shark ate them all!

Considering the B rated quality of all other shark movies out there plus how lame Deep Blue Sea 2 was, this one is decent in terms of visual quality and plot, but it's a movie you will forget you ever watched by the next day

You either love it or hate it!
18 January 2020
This is not the first adaptation on screen of HP Lovecraft's The Color Out of Space, but it is visually the most well made. The story is a bit different, which adds to its originality since the Lovecraftian canon is very flexible. I admit that Cage might not have been the best choice in this movie and his acting is mediocre at best (his humor is very dry these days), but the children acted superbly.

The CGI and special effects are ok, maybe not the best but still very immersive with the story. Aside from the kids and Ezra, the other cast is kind of hit and miss, but they are not present in the movie for too long so I can give that a pass.

There is effort put in how this movie was directed, visualized and even the sound made scenes very unsettling. Some scenes could have used more work, but I love the fact that the story takes its time to invest you in the characters. Even the Alpacas were a sweet touch.

Since this is a Lovecraft movie, we all know that there is no happy ending here and that the creature just exists without even realizing humans are around it. It has no intentions or good or evil and that is what makes Cosmic Horror so wonderful, the fact that we can't do anything to save ourselves in the face of such unfathomable events. This is meant to be a glimpse into insanity and I believe the movie does achieve this very well!

No, just no
28 May 2019
I give this flick a 3/10 just because of the cast, but the story and acting is so stiff, you feel like a 3 year old kid wrote this when he was bored out of his mind. Jarmusch tried to make this as a Tarantino movie but failed so hard and missed the whole point. I could not crack a smile the entire movie and this was advertised as a comedy. The plot is so cringe and even most of the actors know how cheap this was. There is nothing original here, nothing happens for almost 1 hour and the movie is 1h&40min. I really don't know what to find positive here, even the zombies suck and they don't even have a huge role to play. Just don't waste your time with this, I suffered enough so you don't have to!

Don't waste your time on this
8 March 2019
If you were expecting a good comic action movie, you are going to be deeply disappointed. 90% of this movie is about acting stupid and anything unlike a woman. If this is what means to be a super woman (*cough* unlike Wonder Woman) then she is not qualified to represent a women's model as she shows no respect for any other human beings. This is a very narcissistic take on this character from the movie's point of view and all the focus is on the character instead of the plot. There is nothing remotely attractive about this movie in the sense of Marvel. It feels out of place and poorly directed. The other actors tried to balance this movie out but since they are in roughly 10% of the movie, I simply could not get the feeling that this is a movie worth recommending to anyone who likes the MCU. This movie should have been call Cat Woman 2 with a real cat lady.

How to destroy a good idea
28 April 2018
Amazing concept, great initial first character, good plot exploration BUT everything goes to waste the moment 4 typical american imbeciles act like heroes in a place they should not be and they don't even understand. This movie was a missed opportunity. If they would have just stuck with the initial guy and follow his story alone without involving this 4/5 useless characters, the movie would have been 10 stars. This show how bad writing and acting destroy a great premises of an amazing concept. What's worse is that the visuals are actually well made and there was a lot that could have been developed.

It's fun to watch once, if you can swallow the stupid american dialog with zero humor in it. Hope someone has a better brain and remakes this into what it should be!

Awesome CGI and backgrounds, but zero new information
13 April 2018
Don't get me wrong, I love what they did with the series but copy-pasting information from documentaries that were on Discovery and Discovery Science for the past 15 years or so and just applying nice graphics is not going to impress most of us. It's nice to watch but very poor on it's writing and script. Now I understand why none of the other more mundane actors such as Morgan Freeman did not take part in this!

Twin Peaks (2017)
10/10
For people who don't understand the plot
2 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This series, tho I just consider it one huge extraordinary epic movie, is weird in every sense for people who are not familiar with the video games such as Submachine Series and The Room Series.

The show is really really weird, but weird is just a side effect of being awesome. We are presented with this deformed reality that belongs to strange beings who speak in strange ways with strange customs and a strange "world" where dialog interactions have long pauses. The genius behind these scenes is that we are mere observers into a reality very alien to us.

Like the games I just mentioned, Twin Peaks (as also the title hints) is about 2 realities clashing into each other. In episode 8 we see that when Cooper's world (in 1945) detonates the first atomic bomb a rip in time and space is open and the beings in the alternative reality who watch Cooper's reality observe this event. Moreover, because of this event, an entity jumps into Cooper's reality where he starts making havoc. So here is where Laura Palmer comes into play. The entities on the other side give birth to a savior, or at least they try because this dark entity seems to be smarter than most of them.

But make no mistake, just because Cooper's world looks like ours, that doesn't mean that this isn't an alternate reality to our timeline. As I said we are mere observers and this is the extraordinary plot that twists everything since we see 2 alien worlds that are not ours, thus all the confusion and long pauses in the dialogs. Another hint is the jumps between various types of scenes where they seem to belong to other time periods or maybe even other realities.

Twin Peaks is the best show I have seen in a long time and deserves 11 Stars IMO. Bare with it until the end because the ending will have a unique twist in Cinematographic History.

Star Trek: Renegades (2015–2017)

Edward Furlong oh god
23 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
It is difficult to take this movie serious when you have Edward Furlong playing in it. The guy is stoned even when acting. The movie itself has mixed feelings since this is another face of Star Trek with mercenaries, wars, politics and betrayals which has nothing to do with the original concept of Star Trek ("going where no one has gone before").

Adrienne Wilkinson did a horrible porn acting attempt as the captain, they should have left that alien thing before her take the lead, it would have certainly been more interesting.

The movie does pack a nice plot, but nothing too fancy and the recognizable character from the previous movies are faded away in the background making this movie lose a lot of its essence.

The CGI is, well its all they could afford I guess. I can't complain much there because I rather enjoyed seeing old CGI mingle with a Star Trek movie.

Hope they don't make a series out of it because it is really not worth continuing it further. I do however recommend they remake this movie with better actors, with better acting performance, a bit more plot polishing and better CGI because it has the potential of being a great collection movie of the Star Trek franchise.

Very high potential
3 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This movie could have been so much more. it had all the elements to end up a masterpiece, but for whatever reasons the actions seem incomplete. The potential in this movie was beyond awesome, unfortunately they only scratched the surface.

The beginning of the movie wasn't all that promising but once I had a view at the first snow creature I was amazed how well it looked.. from afar. Once they got close, it lost all the fear that got me excited at first. I'm not saying they did a bad job, but the effects and costumes felt outdated and unpolished.

The acting was above average, even though some character decisions were sloppy here and there, never the less the movie did connect with the human touch after 9 years of survival in the wilderness with 2 men and a child.

The plot is unique and original but a bit rushed, maybe too many elements were included and there wasn't enough time to explore them in depth and evolve a better bond between them. One solid example would be the radio voices that were suggesting dementia, but they were there only for a few minutes in the movie then they weren't mentioned at all.

The movie is worth watching, even though the ending was kind of messy with little information what was going on. Maybe one day someone will try to remake it into something better and add more refined details that were skipped or rushed in this movie.

Kevin Durand - what is there more to say!?
24 July 2015
I have to say Kevin Durand worked with a low budget movie and made it into a nice piece of work at the end. Don't expect high quality horror from it, but I do appreciate the fact that the director did focus on tense moments and suspense rather than just on cheap scare tricks. The CGI is low budget as expected but they did do a good job at keeping it away from the screen until the last moment, making the audience grip on to find out what was hiding in those woods all this time. Acting is rather good and the double plot entices the story very well towards the end. If you don't know Kevin Durand, check some of his other roles, one of my favorite being "Vasiliy Fet" in the series called "The String". In the end I have to rate this as a 9/10 as there were some mistakes and clichés here and there, but nothing that would spoil the good action the movie brought forward.

Awesome pure fun
15 February 2015
Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead is a great comic book adaptation. It has all the zombie elements in it, but what made it even great was the fact that they included little things, like children, chemical agents, inflammable zombies that can be used instead of fuel and much more. Being an Australian movie makes it even more out of an ordinary type of zombie music, but the acting was tolerable. But who needs a lot of background stories when you can focus on the action that turn this movie into a Resident Evil kind of story. Yes we do have some clichés here and there, and yes the Army is trying to control the situation and trying to make their own weapon, but making the main characters funny psychos with guns brings a balance to all that monotony and grim plot.

One downside of the movie is the poor execution of the camera angles. They had the right ideas on how to shoot the action but everything is way too rushed into the screen, making it difficult to follow the events and really take in the action.

I give this one 9 out of 10 because it stands up to the zombie genre that you can also find in the zombie Spanish movies.

People forget about acting
14 April 2014
The Borderlands is not your typical horror found footage movie, but rather a more subtle story that can only be found in good horror books. You would think a Christian theme is another poltergeist cliché, but in reality this goes back to the roots of paganism.

Acting is very well executed, sometimes a bit too bold if I may add, but never the less the characters are well developed and have strong and reliable personalities. The focus of the movie is based on the fact that one of the priests is driven by his instinct to dig deeper and get an unexpected truth out to light.

On the other hand you have his mirror reflection on the camera specialist who pulls in the opposite direction towards escaping the dark plot. in the end they both inter wind by forced cooperation just to shape out a truly remarkable lost footage movie.

I give it 8/10 since some of the other characters don't come as well elaborated as the main two leading roles. If you are a fan of the lost footage videos type of guy, this movie will not disappoint.

100 epic fails
21 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
What a great way to take a smart idea and stain it with rubbish from 100 underage kids that have no clue how to act. First of all, the future of the human race should not stay in American hands, since They American culture and mentality is the worst in the world.

While watching this catastrophe of an episode, I did see between the lines a book concept, but whoever stole that idea executed it miserably. Having 3rd grade actors from other Sci-FY series won't make this any better.

There are so many flaws that it would take an entire season to describe them all. Radiation goes away after at least 50.000 years and not just after 100. The rest of the episode stands out in cheap CGI, lots of flares and retarded dialogues.

The only hope this series have, is if they reboot the pilot and add experience and mature actors and then rewrite the entire script dialogues. I can survive with the 90's CGI and other pathetic effects, but with ugly college kids that have apples for brains, I can't look at this series ever again! Avoid this garbage at all cost, it is a waste of time and intellect. I rate only 1 star out of respect for the main stolen concept that stands behind this atrocity.

The horse was the hero of the story
16 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is the 300's little crippled brother movie. I enjoyed 300 because it focused on action rather than a sleep story with politics, morals and non sens that this sequel presents us.

The Athenians don't even have a proper army, just some farmers with shinny swords, that miraculously learned to fight in the last 5 minutes before the war began.

The plot is weak, makes very little sense and is barely focused on any historical and political events.

As I swallowed most of the boring movie scenes, I just couldn't get past the one with the horse. This horse was The Horse, that could fly through water and drift through fire.

Characters are forgettable like the the story. But what is worse than all things summed together, is the fact that the villeins had a ton of opportunities to kill their enemies, but instead they just preferred to have a chat and some drinks together.

Don't bother with this movie, you aren't missing anything. The first movie was 300 times better!

The Monkey's Paw (I) (2013)
7/10
Tricky story
26 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I have to say that this movie did go further than I would have anticipated. Though it is flawed by the general clichés, I think there is actually a clever mini-plot behind it.

Even though Voodoo is a religion that celebrates life and death and has very little to do with black magic and considering that you can't revive a dead guy even if you had a mountain of monkeys with 4 paws, the movie leaves an open alternative. And that is: that actually everything was a coincidence, but the paw played the part of not bringing luck. In the end, maybe Cobb didn't die in the crash (or maybe just clinically died for a brief moment) and just went insane from the head injuries and the car may have just been abandon by a run away guy. There is no clear evidence of magic but maybe just psychical influence.

I liked how the story was twisted here and there, characters were OK developed and the action moved relatively fast paced with the events. I give it 7/10 cause with a better cast and more time to shape the plot better would have made this movie a great classic.

Warning: Spoilers
I have to say Ben Stiller was never a character to show off with something more than a few laughs in a movie, but this one, well OMG, this one is for the epic movies collection.

First of all, I thought I saw 2 different movies compacted in one. The second part was just breath taking and there is only one word to describe the feeling (WOW)!

This movie gets a 10 out of 10, for the best movie of 2014 so far and making Ben my new favorite actor next to Johnny Depp. If you enjoy art and most of all life and beauty, this movie has it all and even more than expected.

Super awesome
6 December 2013
I will give this one a 10 out of 10 cause it is very well made. The movie director had a very talented way of hiding the facts in plain sight yet alluding us off track with illusions and disbelieves. It is hard to avoid what the movie is about, but I will just say this, I haven't seen such a good acting performance since "28 days later".

The movie becomes predictable half way to the end, still you are set up in the situation where you have no idea what the main character is going to do or is going to end up.

The ending is indeed one of my favorites and makes it more intriguing since it is a never ending loop of trial and error till you get it right, that is if you ever get it right! If you rely like to see something well performed and with smart twists, I guarantee you this movie will not fail to impress.
