Call the Midwife (2012)
Great Series But Cast Keeps Changing
I love series like this one, where the characters win you over from the very first episode. What I don't like though is when the actual star of the show leaves because the actress wants to pursue a career in films. Jessica Raine was brilliant as nurse Jenny Lee, who's life the series is based on. But she left after just a few seasons. Same with the actress that played Nurse Chummy. She was one of the best characters ever, but also left for greener pastures. After that, it's just a revolving door of nurses. The nuns are prett consistent, notwithstanding the addition of Sister Hilda and Sister Francis in season 8, who are really hard to like.
The story lines are brilliantly written, and you get to know each mother and their background, along with their problems and fears. I'll keep watching the show as long as it's on, but I'm just so disappointed that many of the favorites will never be back.
The Lodge (2019)
Could Have Been So Much Better
The premise of the movie makes great sense. Two kids, bitter about the suicide of their mom go after the "other woman" and try to drive her completely crazy. The one thing wrong with it though is that someone like the father would never be with someone like the girlfriend. He is older, established, with a family. She is much younger than him, the only survivor or a mass cult suicide, and already emotionally unstable. And it is mentioned that she was the reason for the parent's divorce, so he's obviously been with her a while. What could they possibly have in common outside the bedroom? THEN he makes the choice to leave his two grieving children solely in her care for days while he goes back to work. Without even being able to call and check in on them because of spotty cell reception. Ummmmm, ok.
The tricks the kids played were creative, and cruel at the same time. But the girl didn't deserve what happened to her, so in the end you have a hard time feeling sorry for the kids. It's just a mess of a movie with a sad, sad ending.
Malignant (2021)
Lots of surprises and it keeps you guessing!!
I am a huge horror movie fan, and I wasn't sure what to expect out of this movie. But I'm glad I found it! The first part of the movie is suspenseful and scary, especially being set partly in an old Victorian house, The house is huge and you don't know what kind of horrors are just around the corner. Is there a stalker outside? Is there a killer on the loose?
Once the big reveal is made towards the end of the movie, it's a complete blood bath. Much like the 80's slasher movies used to be. I actually said WTAF out loud once it was clear what was happening, lol. It's campy and unpredictable, and if you are looking for a movie that really keeps you guessing, this is a perfect movie for you.
Knock at the Cabin (2023)
Not His Best Work
I don't know what happened to M. Night Shyamalan, but his last several movies just fell flat and were very predictable. I keep hoping for something the caliber of The Sixth Sense, Signs, or The Village, but this movie just wasn't worth the time I spent watching it. It would have been nice to have some background on the family before the bad guys showed up, but we didn't get anything. The girl playing Wen was absolutely adorable, and the couple playing Eric and Andrew were good too. But you knew what was going to happen and there was no mystery or suspense. I loved the setting, the quaint little cabin in the woods, and the cinematography was great, the plot was just so blahhhhh. I didn't read the book though, I admit, so maybe that would have been a good idea before seeing the movie.
Manifest (2018)
What Just Happened??
I loved this show when I started watching it. It was exciting and unpredictable, and really kept me guessing. Then towards the end of season 3, the writers completely blew it. Between the murder of Grace, and Cal coming back 5 years older, I was ready to stop watching. The new Cal is whiny and nerdy, and the death of Grace was heartbreaking. Not to mention how cold hearted and closed off Ben has become to his whole family, especially Cal. The original Cal was so cute and such a good actor, so I don't understand the choice for playing older Cal. He doesn't have any chemistry at all with any of the other cast, and seems completely out of place. Not to mention that he has to stay in hiding now as "Gabriel". Come on now!
I'm now trying to decide if I should see it through and keep going, but I'm really disappointed and a little angry.
A Savannah Haunting (2021)
I'm so confused!
The movie was ok, mostly for the fact that it was filmed in the actual house where the real haunting took place. The atmosphere was spooky and I liked the first part of the movie. But I was so confused. After the husband told the therapist that they didn't have a daughter named Alice, then why exactly did they move to Savannah? The wife told the therapist it was because their daughter drowned, but if there was no daughter, what was the real reason? And the ending was really disappointing. Once the husband walked into the room of ghosts from the 1800's, it just got really dumb. And we don't even know what happened to the husband and the two kids.
American Horror Stories (2021)
So So Bad
I was looking forward to watching this, being a fan of all of the seasons of American Horror Story. What it ended up being is a really badly written teen drama set in the original murder house. The acting is dismal and the plot is overdone and boring. It's literally like Mean Girls meets the haunted mansion at Disneyland. Kaia Gerber can't act her way out of a paper bag, she's just horrible and so boring, and Paris Jackson is almost as bad. Please bring back the original AHS with some fresh new ideas.
Welcome Home (2018)
Nothing Special
I don't know what would possess Aaron Paul to make a movie with Emily Ratajkowski. Her acting is just awful and her character has zero personality. Exactly like IRL Emily. It started out looking promising, but by the end it turned ridiculous and too far fetched to comprehend. Any other actress could have done a better job and improved the movie by just having some emotions and doing more than just pouting and posing.
Blair Witch (2016)
Worst Movie Ever!
I rarely write reviews, but this movie was so bad I just had to. Almost the entire film is shot at night, and the majority of the film is nothing more than the characters running through the woods shouting each other's names. The shaky footage made me dizzy. There was barely any mention of the original movie, yet this was supposed to be about Heather's brother searching for clues to what happened to her. Don't waste your time, if I could give this negative stars, I would!
