To the Limit (1995)
Good action and sexy Anna make up for weak plot.
There's some good stuff in To the Limit and not all of them are to do with the lovely lead. Jim Halfpenny's score is a real highlight, his Kamen-esc style adding much suspense to the flick. I also think the direction is pretty standard for PM Entertainment. It certainly feels like a PM movie with its neon lighting and contrast.
I really dig Anna Nicole Smith in this. She's so beautiful it hurts and I think she kicks butt in several of the shootout scenes. Only downside is that, like everyone else her acting isn't so good. Even the great Joey Travolta looks utterly bored except in the love making scene with Anna.
I didn't find the plot that interesting to be honest. I would expect a PM Entertainment film to have at least a mildly engaging storyline but this doesn't.
It isn't great but as a heterosexual teenage boy it does the job. Good shootouts, cool music and a lead with looks that will take your breath away.
6/10
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)
A brave failure
Superman IV isn't exactly the finest moment in the Superman franchise. The effects are poor, the sets are cheap, the editing is choppy and the script doesn't make much sense. There is, however, some good stuff within this 1987 sequel that makes it better than other bad sequels. The Alexander Courage score is wonderful, dramatic and sweeping and really lifts the movie during the action sequences. Mariel Hemingway's character, the lovely Lacy Warfield is a fresh character that adds much to the production. She's very pretty too. Gene Hackman makes a welcome return as the camp Lex Luthor and he has some funny moments with his nephew, Lenny Luthor. The story has some good themes and messages but they seem to get lost within the incoherent nature of the structure. It's nowhere near as entertaining as the first, second or even third Superman flicks but it's still a charming little flick that could have been so much more. 6/10 from me.
Superman II (1980)
Golden entertainment
Where's all this criticism come from? So it's old, so it's dated, but who cares? Superman II is a splendid mix of romance, action, suspense and comedy. It was made in a time when they actually used practical effects and models because they didn't have the computerised technology they have these days. I was impressed with the wire work and the action sequences were an awesome spectacle to behold. Actors like Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman make their triumphant return to the series as does Ned Beaty, Terrance Stamp, Margot Kidder and the lovely Valerie Perrine. The score by Ken Thorne is never given the credit it deserves, neither does Richard Lester's fun, slapstick-filled direction. He simply did the job he was brought in to do. He's no Richard Donner, but the franchise was never bad with Lester at the helm. All in all, Superman II is a wonderful motion picture and a great companion piece to the original.
Weird Science (1985)
Sexy, crude but surprisingly warm
I really liked Weird Science. It was a zany comedy from the 80s and I took it as such. I also didn't think I'd laugh quite so much but there are so many moments in this that I couldn't help but chuckle. When the two bully characters clamber their way up an escalator in order to check out Lisa, Kelly Lebrock's character, had me in stitches. Another great thing about the movie is the chemistry between the actors. Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith play off each other brilliantly and Kelly Lebrock is superb as their love interest. Bill Paxton is also hilariously as the militaristic buffoon "Chet." The pacing is lightning fast and the direction is both interesting and creative. The soundtrack is full of rare gems, the most noteworthy being The Wild Men Of Wonga's "Why Don't Pretty Girls (Look At Me)" In the end, Weird Science is a fun-filled 80's with plenty of appeal and warmth to keep you in good spirits. Go ahead, watch Weird Science. It sure beats the dull, by the numbers comedies that are released today.
Superman III (1983)
The most underrated movie of all time.
Superman III is best watched on a Saturday night, with fizzy and sweets. It's such an entertaining flick that includes action, comedy, suspense, love and excellent stunts. Richard Pryor is great as the unlucky Gus Gorman, a man that can't quite find the right job. He soon becomes involved with the villains as his computer skills become abused for the evil plans of Mr.Webster. There are many interesting plots in Superman III, such as Superman's fall from grace and the relationship between Clark Kent and Lana Lang. Ken Thorne gives the film some style and Gorgio Moroder produces some decent synth songs that feature throughout the adventure. The special effects are well realised and the best of the series by a country mile. The junkyard fight is also a memorable sequence which ranks as my favourite moment from the Superman films. Superman III shouldn't be a 4.9; it's too good for that.
RoboCop 3 (1993)
A warm, inviting flick that's better than its predecessors
Fred Dekker brings some style back to the RoboCop franchise. Robert John Burke, Jill Hennessy and John Castle are just a few names in an impressive all-star cast. Basil Poledouris returns to score the proceedings and his music is even better than what he composed in the original. The action isn't as gory as in the original movie, but it still packs a punch. RoboCop 3 is a very diverse movie. The females are brainy, strong-willed and not afraid to get into the thick of things. The villains are also different and intriguing. As a fan of martial arts movies, I can say that I like the idea of Cyborg Ninjas hunting down RoboCop. The fight scenes are a little clunky, but at least they're not as tasteless as the battles in the vile "RoboCop 2." The Christmas setting and the people vs big corporations plot make RoboCop 3 a joy for the whole family. Teens will no doubt love the action set pieces, while kids will relate to the character of Nikko. Adults can take much enjoyment from John Castle's excellent performance as the baddie and also the satirical humor. RoboCop 3 is a 3.9 on IMDb and I think that's a damn shame. Such an innovative film doesn't deserve such hate. If any RoboCop should be bashed for its low quality, it should be "RoboCop 2." I say watch RoboCop 3 because you might be pleasantly surprised.
RoboCop 2 (1990)
A train-wreck of a sequel that lacks taste
It's fair to say that I hate "RoboCop 2." It's a nasty, horrible and mean- spirited mess of a film that lacks a clear narrative and an interesting story. The acting is woeful, the musical score is disastrous and the script is nonsensical and witless. Peter Weller is completely lost and confused as the character he played in the first movie is so badly characterized that you'd think that this was a different RoboCop to the one we saw in the first movie. Even the brilliant Lewis character is nothing like she was in the original film. The direction lacks flair, style and identity; sometimes it feels like a TV movie that Channel FIVE show on weekday afternoons. Avoid RoboCop 2 like the plague. I can't believe that they thought this would be an acceptable way to follow up such a great film like RoboCop. 2/10
