The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Attention to detail helps us relate to a beautiful story
A very interesting story told in a heartwarming setting that manages to feel real and, above all, hopeful.
All characters are given real depth, conversations feel natural and not out of place, which all helps draw us into the story of this genius woman.
The attention to detail in conversations and interactions is what puts this series apart from so many others. A small tumble of someone waking up hung-over, small gestures that gently help tall the story. It is beautiful to see a story told by a team that puts real effort into making characters feel believable, fragile, and honest.
The series could focus more on how she changes the way men around her see women (by doing what she does) and less on copy/paste comments like "they only like me because I am a woman", which often feel out of character for such a strong personality.
Other than that: the actors all do an amazing job, there is so much more to compliment in this series, from the costumes to the music, but I really wanted to focus my review o what I think really stands out:
An astonishing screenplay supported by empathic actors.
Owari No Seraph (2015)
Nothing new
Just another lame anime using the same main character as every other show.
Main character screams all the time and puts everyone in danger without ever learning anything or ever shutting up. I keep hoping he finally dies and learns his leason.
So sick of these boring repetitive and annoying 'heroes'
Who Am I - Kein System ist sicher (2014)
Inflated attempt at being intelectual and witty
The main idea for the movie is good and the actors deliver their roles well.
Unfortunately the plot is so filled with holes and the conversations keep being interrupted by immature statements that sound like taken out of a school's recess argument with 15-year olds trying to impress each other.
These empty statements will make you cringe ("why do you drive a porsche?" "I'm employee of the month") and not only feel artificial but would never satisfy the questions being asked in the real world.
As the story goes on, the quality of the plot falls drastically untill it starts to make use of overused cliches until it gets to a point where the author doesn't seem to have put effort into even making the dots connect, leaving the viewer with a feeling of "there is absolutely NO evidence that would make anyone believe this story or fall for those tricks.
All things combined, make the story feel artificial, unbelievable and very immature.
Maybe a good movie for 12 year old Minecraft players who dream about being great hackers by taking drugs and acting careless.
