Apartment Zero (1988)
The extraordinary acting won me over
Once again, I was gripped watching a 28 yr old Colin Firth act with such nuance and depth. I recognised Hart Bochner, but I didn't know where from. He played the utter office jerk in Die Hard but, here, clean shaven, I must admit the actor was drop dead gorgeous even if his character was far from it.
To top it off, the film has a wonderful twist ending. Had I not been looking into Firth's back catalogue; I would never have discovered this gripping film. Acting kudos all around.
Kursk (2018)
This is a truly moving story.
There are some idiotic reviews of this film speaking to it being melodramatic! I have just finished watching the film and I was gripped all the way through. Although I was 40 in 2000, I don't recall this incident at all, however the film reminded me of "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque.
There are two sides to every coin and the Russian submariners serving in their nation's navy are no different from the Germans serving in WWI - their lives hang in the balance at the behest of those who command them. I was deeply moved by their predicament, and I must say that anyone who was not is obviously unable, or unwilling, to show empathy.

WATCH THE ORIGINAL BBC PART MINI SERIES
This movie is a pale imitation of Paul Abbott's almost 6 hour complicated BBC mini-series. Most remakes, IMHO, should never be attempted. Especially transformations from long series on small screen to about one third its size on the large screen. The work is bound to suffer.
Do yourselves a favour and look for the original BBC series - the story line is fleshed out and the characters, even minor ones, are given import.
