Stuck on You (2003)
A surprisingly engaging movie.
This is a movie about conjoined twins managing to have separate lives and separate loves. Though the premise seemed a bit silly, this turned out to be a surprisingly engaging movie. A bit of humor and a bit of pathos and finally a good measure of heart. I really liked it more and more as I watched. Of course Damon and Kinnear as twins let alone conjoined twins is a stretch but they ran with it. They even managed to explain the age difference as a result of who had more of the shared liver (that probably cannot be medically correct, but who cares.) An added surprise was the final number with a singing Greg Kinnear and a dancing Meryl Streep! All in all a fun movie.
Not a great film but a good one that surprises.
Love Field (1992)
an excellent portrait of the times
This movie is not only tells the story of the accidental connection of two people, one black and one white, who would probably have never met in their normal lives, it also presents a vivid portrait of the time in which they lived. Set against the background of the JFK assassination and the aftermath, the protagonists meet and help each other through turning points in their lives. At first wary of each other, they come to understand the forces which have shaped each other's personalities and then come to appreciate the humanity and longing they have in common. Segregation and prejudice on both sides are explored without preaching. Finally it ends if not happily at least on a note of hope.
