Demolition Man (1993)
Fun, Entertaining, post-modernism and accurate too.
I saw this on cable at a friends house one night we had nothing to do and he recommended it. After I discovered the B-action movie plot that would soon be borrowed from Austin Powers I was pleasantly surprised by the Post Modern Ideas explored throughout the movie, like that the Top 100 songs are all old commercials. Then I was surprised by how close it's future was to ours; Schwarzenagger could unfortunately run for President one day, Taco Bell has gone from a McDonalds alternative to one of the Fast-Food leaders, and fear of new diseases and old ones like AIDS have become modern fears. Also, with the announcement of Rocky 6, Stallone has become the next Chuck Norris as far as cult-like popularity goes. I wouldn't be surprised if a Demolition Man Unrated Directors Cut Special Deluxe Edition DVD is in the works.
Crash (2004)
Disappointing
This movie (cause it certainly isn't a film) is the biggest disappointment. The acting with the exception of Terrence Howard, and Thandie Newton is horrible. I like Don Cheadle but he just isn't good in this one. Everything that is meant to be provocative in this movie is just said for shock value. The movie tries to say so much that it doesn't say anything at all. It also perpetuates a stereotype about films: If you want people to like your movie and its not very good, start in the end without revealing much, go back in time and show the beginning again with more connections. Nothing about race relations has changed since the 80's, so go watch Do The Right Thing instead.
Mallrats (1995)
Not That Bad
This movie has always gotten a bad rap. On the contrary this movie is still enjoyable. Sure, it is the weakest of the New Jersey Trilogy (Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy) and essentially Clerks with a budget (Two slackers, one more motivated than the other). What really makes this film standout is the dialogue. It's smart, funny and easy to relate to. It's filled with lines commenting on the "Mall Culture", that make you think "I've always wondered if anyone else thought that." or "Wow, that makes perfect sense!" Also, while Jason Lee's role in Chasing Amy was his breakout role, this sets him up nicely for the role of Banky. He's not as crude or outrageous in this role but it can easily be seen as a warm-up. Overall this is a very enjoyable flick. It's not as good as Clerks and definitely not as good as Chasing Amy but is still worth renting and if you are a Kevin Smith fan you should own it.
The Notebook (2004)
Groundhog Day: The Drama; A Walking Cliché
*Spoilers* Before people pre judge my review because of my "Name", let me just say that I wanted to like this movie. I have the capacity and appreciation to like this kind of movie. Unfortunately this film couldn't make me enjoy it. First of all this movie leaves no surprises. Everything is predictable and those who were "surprised" haven't seen any movie that has intense twists and turns. Also let's count the clichés: 1. Girl Meets Poor Boy whom she falls in love with. 2. Dancing In The Street 3. Parents don't approve of poor boy cause of his background. 4. Girl Leaves boy. 5. Girl meets another rich guy who is equally charming and good looking. 6.Parents approve of rich guy. 7. Girl runs into first guy and they fall in love again. 8. Now girl has to choose between rich guy whom she loves is the "smart" choice and Poor guy whom she loves passionately and is the "right" choice. 9. Old people looking back at the past. 10. Memory Loss 11. The Ending (Im not gonna give it away just so others can see how obvious it is.) There were, however some things I did like about this movie. How anyone can not like James Garner is beyond me. The film also captures it's time setting very well and looks beautiful. And every cliché it uses it executes well and is believable. The Acting is also very good. In the end this isn't really a bad movie its just not original and in a world with cookie-cutter genres originality is the only thing saving hollywoods soul.
