Rampage (2018)
Maybe the best video game movie ever
Is that a ringing endorsement? Probably not. But this is just a really fun popcorn movie. The plot is ridiculous. The acting is over the top. Jeffrey Dean Morgan chews more scenery than the beasts, and it's FANTASTIC. His chemistry with the Rock is great. My wife was smiling ear to ear when it was over. I couldn't believe she liked it so much, knowing nothing of the plot or source material. You could do a lot worse with pointless, smash-em-up monster movies, and it would be hard to name many better.
Snowpiercer (2013)
Better than Parasite
It's clear that Bong knows how to craft a film. His art direction, framing, style are top notch. He clearly has a message as well. That message was conveyed much more effectively in Snowpiercer than Parasite. And it has nothing to do with subtitles. Train to Busan also manages to convey its message and heart through subtitles. The problem with all 3 of these movies is in the ending. They all leave more questions than answers, and the questions aren't very simple. It definitely left me with a bad taste in my mouth, but the first 90% of the movie was well worth the time spent watching.
Storage Wars: Northern Treasures (2017)
Cheesy as a Canadian hockey puck
It doesn't have to make sense. The show gets pretty hammy sometimes. But you can tell they're not actors. Roy is my favorite tv personality ever. Paul and bogey are hilarious. People need to stop being so crabby and just enjoy fun stupidity sometimes. Not family friendly tho. Potty mouthed canadians
Zumbo's Just Desserts (2016)
One of Netflix's best
It's just a fun show. The contestants are easy to root for, or against. The creations are fun to watch. And, in this day and age, it's just nice to have a show everyone in the family can sit down and watch. There's literally nothing wrong with this show just being a baking competition
Gisaengchung (2019)
Underwhelming
I'm sure I'll get hated to the hill for this, but this wasn't a masterpiece. It was well acted, from what I could tell. Without knowing Korean, it's certainly possible I'm missing nuances of language that I correct in my own mind through the subtitles. I've seen others defending the second half of the movie, but that really is where it goes off the rails. We were enjoying it up until the party started. Then nothing makes much sense. It completely separates the plot into 2 distinct movies, the 2nd of which isn't that good. The movie explains most of its "nuance" and "message" with plot devices that work out "just right" to explain themselves. But they're just plot devices. And the end plays out as if we're supposed to be happy at the reunion? He killed someone that did nothing to him, except tell his own wife "he smells."
Snowpiercer and Train to Busan were better movies, tho they suffered from the same "poor ending" problem. But those endings were 5-10 minutes long, not 30. All in all, I really wanted to love this like everyone else does, but neither myself nor my wife did, come the end. I understand subtlety, but it really seems like people are digging so deep for it, that they're applying things that even the director never intended. Maybe that's the "abstract" nature of it, I'm not Roger Ebert.
