Good by Ledger
28 January 2008
This was a great movie on friendship in the '70's, and a look at how the sport of skateboarding took off. I'd wanted to see it for awhile, so with Heath Ledger's death, didn't hesitate anymore. I didn't recognize him as the surf shop owner Skip, for the first several scenes. I think he added poignancy to his role, as did others who, in the film, fought their way to who they are. Interesting to know this is based on lives of people still in the skateboarding business, including the man who started off Tony Hawks career. It's good to have work out there yet to see Heath Ledger's talent shine. I'd recommend this movie to people who like to observe people, even if you're neither a skateboarding fan or a Ledger fan.

Darkly Beautiful
18 May 2007
This movie doesn't try to dance around the despair and pain of war, yet it brings forward reasons to hope as well. The effects were exceptional, although gory at times and may not be appropriate for young children. Everyone appeared to be very well cast. I think watching this movie in Spanish with English subtitles added depth to the characters as well as gave the opportunity to not miss a word. A beautiful, dark, suspenseful film with touches of light and hope. The young woman who played Ofelia (appropriate name for a magical movie) was heart-breaking in her role. A movie to recommend for people interested in myths and faerie, as well as history.

Thrilling Thriller?
12 April 2007
May contain spoilers: Advertized as a supernatural horror movie, this is another film, like First Born, (also with Elizabeth Shue), which turns out to be a psychological drama about the dark side of human nature.

Dakota Fanning as usual does a great job acting, De Niro is believable in his role as well. The DVD lists several alternate ending choices. The one I saw finishes the story as it started, as a study of the human mind.

I am not a fan of slasher or horror films but have been renting movies like this for their possible supernatural content; psychological thrillers are okay with me, too. It's unfortunate that many movies are being miss marketed, targeting the wrong audiences and therefore not meeting many viewers expectations.

Is this movie worth a rental? Yes, especially if you enjoy piecing a movie together before it's done. If parts are a bit slow, there's always fast-forward, a favorite button for me.

Folklore and Shapeshifting-A Good Review
5 February 2007
I didn't fast forward through this movie like I do with many others. For me there just aren't enough supernatural movies out there, so I didn't find renting this one to be a waste of money or time. Folklore, shape shifting, and yes, sex. It wasn't a smooth movie but it was entertaining and intriguing in its own way. I think some of the actors deserve credit for playing a good part. One of the youngest actresses, who played the young daughter Sally, added depth to the movie with her believability as an open-minded, non-judgmental child. It wasn't a great effects movie like Underworld, but like reading a good Sci-Fi story, it can draw a person into a different world for awhile. I enjoyed the setting as well, rural Ireland, (though I'm not certain if it was shot there). It followed a man's quest to know himself, but the plot lacked a lot of depth in that regard. So for those who like the idea of shape shifting, you might find it a worthwhile movie, but due to the sex scenes I definitely recommend it only for adults.

Worth the Rental
26 August 2006
I enjoyed this movie. Cameron Bright and William Fichtner in supporting roles added to the film. Yes, there were a lot of CG effects, but we are in the computer age after all. I was looking to be entertained, to think a bit, this movie did not disappoint. It reminded me of Daredevil and Electra, also movies that I enjoyed. I had passed it up a few times in the movie store, but am glad to have seen it this time around. Violet's color changes were confusing, but I've never seen the comics. It had action, a bit of mystery and romance, and I enjoyed the loyalty/bond between characters. It wasn't deeply thought provoking (unless you really want to analyze it). It wasn't overly bloody. It was simply entertaining.
