First off, lets start off by saying i have knew of this movie years ago. I was expecting this to be a plot-less slasher like Friday the 13th or Texas Chainsaw Massacre, just a slasher. But no. This movie offers way more, and i am surprised.
Well the acting was going to be incredible since you had the man himself Jack Nicholson playing the prime role of Jack, and the rest of the cast does their job pretty well. I only kinda disliked the acting of the kid, it just felt annoying at few spaces, especially at when he is repeating the same word over and over again that whole scene, i had to remove audio in order to watch that scene. But i wont fault the film, since it is a kid after all.
Camera work is beautiful. Everyone keeps mentioning the scene of the elevator, and the two girls standing by each other. Honestly, i am shocked that nobody mentions the scene with the naked woman. That scene was the most terrifying scene of them all. I do not know why but that scene just it was honestly creepy as heck and i applaud them for that.
I love that this movie is more of a psychological piece of isolation, and visions and being alone all the time. The movie showcases in a very well way why isolation, alcohol and lack of family communication are very bad things,.
Music is haunting, creepy and it does it job well, it makes the whole movie seem way more ominous and dark.
Negatives: Pacing. I think this movie could of been at least 30 minutes shorter. At times the movie does become a bit too long, and slow. But then again, we are talking about Stanley, and he loves to make his movies long as possible. That's kinda the only negative, is that the pacing of this movie could of been shortened up.
Except that tiny negative, everything here works pretty well. I have seen two other Stanley's films which are Clockwork Orange and i love that movie, and second one is Full Metal Jacket, which just was not my cup of tea, could of been done much better.
Ultimately yes this movie is a horror classic and i can see why people love it so much. I like horror movies with actual depth, not just slasher, poof that's your movie.
