Provoked: A True Story (2006)
Jagmohan's Masterpiece with Ash at her very best !!!
This movie based on true story grips you from the very beginning and though there are enough light moments even in Jail, it just doesn't let go anytime.... By now, everyone knows the story is that of a woman stuck in an abusive marriage finds her freedom in jail after killing her husband... Every technical aspect of the movie- editing, camera, sound, music- is real class... Ash of course lives the role and each and every frame she is a delight to watch...very expressive face and eyes used wonderfully- thanks to the director too I suppose...Nandita Das doesn't act too smart., Mirinda Richardson, both the lawyers are all excellent in their roles...even side stories in prison are very well done indeed... as the summary says it all, miss it at your own risk !!!
Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006)
This movie rocks and how !!!
I just saw the first day first show of this sequel to Munnabhai MBBS and I must say that the team has come up with an excellent sequel !! The original title was supposedly Munnabhai meets Mahatma Gandhi but due to reverence or whatever reason, the new title has come up...the original title fits the movie like a glove... Munnabhai actually turns nonviolent and starts speaking only truth and also suggests several hapless humans of this new millennium to follow Mahatma's experiments with truth... The story with all its references to current changing scenario of the society is actually not interfering with the comedy that thrives in situations that our Munnabhai creates thanks to the affairs of the heart and the first half goes in a jiff without one realizing how time passed so fast !! actually, at interval time, I was feeling so fortunate to be watching such a great movie- first day first show !!!! the movie continued in the same vein in 2nd half too but the last twenty minutes robbed one star from the movie...it wasn't all that entertaining coming after such a rollicking 2 hrs that preceded it.. Nevertheless, highly recommended for people of all ages !! Sanjay Dutt lives the role and Arshad is not far behind either...Vidya looks good in modern dresses and is quite charming too...Boman, Jimmy, Dia all do justice to their roles as expected...music is good too...
As a bonus, you get to see trailers of Don and Ekalaiva - both seem to be very interesting to say the least !!
Tom, Dick, and Harry (2006)
good fun !!!
Despite the movie being critically panned, I went to a theater and saw the movie....enjoyed it fully like many others in the audience... The story is nothing great...it revolves around 3 guys-one deaf, one mute and one blind- who happen to stay in the same apartment and fall in love with a neighborhood beauty., get in trouble with a villain-played well by Gulshan Grover...of course all in good humor....Dino has improved but still a long way to reach some reasonable level, Celina will do well to take acting lessons...Anuj, Kim and Jimmy do OK...in the climax, Gabbar, Mogambo and Shakaal get beaten by Anthony, Salman from Tera naam and Mangal Pandey !!! Total Timepass...
Things to Do Before You're 30 (2005)
This is a fun movie for all ages !!!
I saw this movie yesterday at the theater... I found it extremely hilarious with a few clichés and touching moments thrown around... The movie revolves around a football team of people in their 20's which has been playing for 20 years and is about to play its 500th match... the characters are so different and each has his own problem and all is done so tastefully and in an outrageous manner that you can't help but laugh at the hilarity of it all !! The cast does full justice to their respective characters- be it Dougray Scott or Jimi Mistry.. I strongly recommend this movie for all adults whether they are football fans or not as the game is played only at the beginning and end credits...
Chocolate: Deep Dark Secrets (2005)
desi usual suspects...
The best part of this movie i the way it captures London in winter...not just the buildings but the spirit manages to enter the frame !! The movie is inspired from usual suspects with the hot scene of basic instinct thrown in for good measure... It is difficult to believe 20 billion pounds being transferred with no escort cars !!! but this movie wants you to believe that apart from a lot of stories with holes more than any pound of swiss cheese will have !!! Tanushree Dutta sure has it to make it big., hope she makes some good career choices...Irrfan, Arshad, Emraan( for a change no kisses !!) all OK, Anil simply doesn't know what over the top acting is all about... Sushma makes a debut rather late in her career and unless many of her scenes are in editing floor, it is rather a sad debut... The redeeming feature is the ending where it differs from usual suspects and the ending is actually a happy one at that !! 3 out of 5...
Sarkar (2005)
Ramu's Godfather
This movie is only inspired from Godfather in the sense that the beginning and the main theme of younger son taking over the empire is same as the original...but a lot of things are different too...
Amitabh is a very good actor and he does justice to the title role but still he is a superstar more and that comes in the way of his becoming a great actor that he can be... This movie is a real push-forward for Abhishek who shines in a role of a liftime...2nd half of the movie truly belongs to him... The cinematography by Amit Roy is superb...background score is too noisy., no idea why.... Not a masterpiece like the original or like RGV's own company., but definitely worth watching...
