classic, ten out of ten!
11 November 2006
A real classic, ten out of ten! Every actor is perfect, the screenplay is a haunting succession of suspenseful scenes. Scenes in car and scenes in the mountains are breathtaking. Wonder if this film is already out in DVD, because it must be seen in Widescreen version. Saw this film in the late fifties, maybe three or four times, and never since then forgot it.I remember it was one of the first Warner like cinemas cope features, process called Warnerscope which gave a very neat cinematography. Shelley Winters and Jack Palance deserved an Oscar for their performances. The only thing I could criticize is not having been directed by someone like, say Nicholas Ray, to increase its rhythm and tension.

It is all about politics
25 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is a really Spike Lee Joint, as said in the credits, and also a 40 Mules and an Acre production, as also said in the final credits.

In my opinion, it's not so emotional as the 25th Hour and does not have the acidic humor of Bamboozeled but is still a very good picture.

Under a mainstream and blockbuster image, this is really about a vengeance that I would said is executed by the four robbers, leaded by Owen's character along with the Rabbi's character, to unveil Plummer's participation in obscure business with the Nazis, 60 years ago! They do want both the diamonds and the documents! Lee takes the opportunity to comment as always about prejudices, racial issues, (latino, Arabs and afro-Americans),and this is really a new yorker point of vue.

Best quote is during the Sikh's character police hearing: " I am Sikh, not Arab!" Answer: " So you shouldn't have difficulty to find a cab in NYC"

All actors are very good, soundtrack excellent and director of photography has done an outstanding job!

It's mostly about environmental awareness
6 March 2005
I'm using my personal VHS copy of this excellent short in my environmental awareness classes for high school, and students are always stroked by its accurate and intelligent issues. It always provides very large and useful discussion about environmental issues.

With a very well humored screenplay and very well balanced use of fiction, documentary and table top animation, this short gives you an overview of what happens in our affluent society with any natural or produced good, with domestic and industrial waste and discussing some very special social issues.

Interesting thing is that this short Ilha days Flores ( Flower Island, in English pronounced Ilya Dass Floresh) it is not outdated, not growing old and unfortunately still shocking when you think of what is happening with all the waste in our society, when people are less important than the profit made.

Bold and powerful new release
7 September 2004
Saw this picture today and am very pleased the way Carlão portraits group of female workers in an industrial Sao Paulo neighborhood, their families, working habits , free time and loves.Very powerful and striking story on some intolerance you can found in almost every big industrial city in the world. Episode on fascist behaviour against foreigners from other provinces is bold and powerful. Great cinematography, full of ideas, great acting. The tenderness of the director towards his characters almost equals Ken Loach's views, but in a more poignant, radical and explosive way.

Some characters could be developed more as their personality is rich enough for a whole new inside story.

About love and globalization
6 March 2004
I just saw this picture and it gave me the impression of Assayas trying to give us a symbolic message on globalization, French versus American markets, and at the end he delivers a movie about the film industry itself. As they say, do it for the French market!

Cinematography is at its best, rhythm of images goes perfectly along character´s feelings at the moment.

Beautiful ball sequence and very good explanation on ceramic and china industry at beginning of 20th century, breath taking swiss sceneries.

I WW sequence is also very well done.

Emmanuelle Beart and Isabelle Huppert are splendorous,La Huppert appears less but is much more intense.

Also got the impression that novel had much more to offer than the 3 hours film version, but this is film, anyway, and script is script.

Beginning and ending with a death scene, love is the only worthy thing in life.
