The Batman (2022)
Impressive
Considering the batman movies that came before this one, I mean wow. Hats off to the team involved in pulling off a masterpiece such as this.
The cast, writing, cinematography and music all merging perfectly here. The movie has a slight goth feel to it for which Pattison is a perfect fit.
The world it's set in feels physically real and the attention to detail is excellent - to the degree of the smudge eye makeup batman has.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Made me feel like a kid again...
Given that the story of a small village being at the center of an apocalyptic event was somewhat off. The movie certainly brings to life the spirit of Ghostbusters in a big way.
Firstly I like how the child actors were made central to the story. It would have been easy to rely on the big name appearances, but that is not the case. The child actors have done a great job, and you find yourself liking all of them.
The humour is also similar to that of the originals. This is something many of the recent re-boots find difficult to capture, and it generally ends up feeling forced. Not in Afterlife though.
Finally, the movie definitely has a lot of fan service and nostalgic elements which for me is always something I fall for. Being in my 40s now, when watching these re-boots you want to be taken back in time and remember how you felt as a kid. Nothing does this better than the last scene in the film which is full of heart and very touching.
Found (2021)
Fairly heartbreaking
I felt for everyone in this and I preferred that it was not broken up into a set of episodes.
Towards the end I really felt for the family and the fathers reaction when he was told it wasn't a match.
Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In (2021)
As good as Senna...
The best football documentary ever. Poignant, deep and stirring.
In this day and age it is great to listen to stories of struggle and triumphs.
My only regret is that it wasn't longer. I'd have loved to have heard more about how Sir Alex managed his life post 1999.
Next Gen (2018)
I found it incredibly moving...
High quality writing, great animation and cinematography.
Many movies have had admirable attempts at looking at the relationship between humans and robots, for me this is the best of all.
The emotional understanding of the teams execution of this movie is fantastic. I hope they continue to produce more like this.
Top Boy (2011)
Reality TV
Only certain people can relate to this type of series.
It's a unique genre that can't be compared to any of the usual so called "gritty" US equivalents.
The acting feels authentic and true to the era and reality of the genre.
I was especially pleased with the development of Kano as an actor through the seasons.
It's intelligently executed and has the perfect mix of subtlety and explosive writing.
Kingdom (2014)
It's a one star because....
...it's not gritty (as netflix proclaims)
... cinematography is hollywood (not realistic)
...main actors are all seem to be cast based on good looks
...lighting of scenes looks artificial (as in perfect)
...fake chanting basically highlighted the unauthentic delivery
Basically inconsistent!
PS. no criticism aimed at actors. more-so the producers, writers, cinematography and improt.
Star Trek: Discovery: Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 (2019)
What a turnaround!
Even I had forgotten that TNG was terrible for the first two seasons.
Season two of Discovery built up well and you could feel the tension slowly building and then boy did it reach a hugely entertaining climax.
I am lost for words on the visuals in this episode, the best i've witnessed for a TV show.
Story comes together brilliantly and for the first time you feel emotionally connected to not just the lead, but all the other characters too.
Well done to the writers for fixing all that was wrong in season one and the first half of season two, it looks like we are in for a treat from here on.
Unorthodox (2020)
When you can't stop thinking about it for days...
The mark of a great show or film is when for the next few days your thoughts keep drifting back to it.
Best TV acting I have seen in a very long time, especially when you consider some really challenging scenes. You really feel for the lead character...
It's dark, emotional, well paced and ends beautifully.
Star Trek: Discovery: Brother (2019)
Disrespectful to the Enterprise
So they pull the enterprise out of thin air and then disregard it for the whole episode. I mean what was the point of bringing the enterprise into the episode?
Oh, and then there are barely any references to Spock until the end of the episode, even though it is titled Brother.
Feels like a ratings grab.
Star Trek: Discovery: New Eden (2019)
Thank you Jonathan Frakes!
For those that don't remember, Jonathan Frakes played William Ryker in Star Trek: The Next Generation and has directed this episode.
The acting was more poised, patient and poignant - much of how TNG was. You can tell someone who really understands the Star Trek universe has had a big hand to play in making this episode one of the better ones.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Not in the spirit of Star Trek
Watching this, you'd have no idea it is Star Trek. It lacks the warmth, charisma, civility of the previous TV series and even the films.
I understand the need to modernise but this lacks continuity in maintaining Strafleet principles and vision which have been the same across generations (no pun intended).
Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press (2017)
The focus of this film is being misinterpreted...
Let me make this clear. I don't like and did not like what Gawker stood for, however the film is not just about Hogan vs Gawker. It's about how the rich are trying to stamp out quality journalism and the lengths they are willing go to in order to do so.
I suppose the film put way too much focus on the Gawker angle - but other than that it is a clear eye opener as to how the super rich and powerful try to control the media.
The story surrounding the Review Journal, Nevada was well rounded and supported by justifiable facts that are hard to deny.
