Les portes tournantes (1988)
Not that good
I recently watched this movie as part of a French course dealing with films and the books that inspired them. To say the least, the movie was a huge disappointment for me. The cinematography was brutal. There was such an overuse of soft filters, and the DOP tried to create illusions of different times by using coloured filters, and it turned out quite bad, at least I think so. I was also disappointed with the acting in this film. The actors were not up to par. Not only were the characters poorly written (except Lauda and Blaudelle), but the acting was unable to save a poorly written script. The music was perhaps the biggest upside to the film. The piece constantly played in the film changes rhythms, speeds, and each person that plays it has a different interpretation. It reminded me of "The Conversation" in the sense that one song/sentence can have several meanings. And I'm not even going to get into the ending of the film. At such a critical moment, there's a pause that lasts way too long, and ends up being quite comical, when it should have been a breathtaking moment. Overall, I wasn't too impressed with this film. With the knowledge that it had a prize from the 1988 Cannes Film festival under its belt, I expected a whole lot more from this.
Camp (2003)
One of the movies of its year
Yeah, unfortunately, one of the worst movies of its year.
I couldn't believe this movie. I was watching it with my girlfriend, and it was so bad that I was looking forward to watching Win a Date with Tad Hamilton. Maybe this was because we had just watched an episode of CSI:Miami, maybe not, but this movie is just plain bad.
There were many parts that I just did not understand. There are also about 25 developing stories in the plot, making it hard to keep up with.
Also, it's a camp movie, which made it even more disappointing. I loved Happy Campers, Meatballs, Indian Summer, and Camp Nowhere, among other camp classics. This one sucked, plain and simple.
Here are my reasons. The main character is confusing, boring, and the self-indulgent, guitar-playing, song-writing, good-looking, all-the-girls-want numbnut. The other characters include the not-too-ugly-thinks-she's-ugly compliment-begging girl, the mean-girl, the wishes-she-was-it girl, the fat-aspiring-for-her-parents-approval-girl, the gay-guy....WAIT....scratch that, the many many many gay guys...and finally the old-drunk-secretly-talented-bum-alcoholic.
Here's my spoiler - one of the homosexual boys ends up sleeping with a girl. Now, I'm not sure what you all think, but is that not a bad message? Movies are more and more showing homosexuality as a personality trait...you know, something people just are, and then the gayest guy sleeps with a girl. I was troubled by this because it just isn't a good message.
And now, for my rating. 2/10 The only reason that's a 2 and not a 1 is because I feel bad for all of the young aspiring actors in this movie who one day hope to make it. I mean they tried pretty hard...right?
