Soldier's Girl (2003)
A tragedy in military
Soldier's Girl is a drama film in America which was released in 2003. The film was directed by Frank Pierson and produced by Showtime. I like the movie because of the plot and the amazing acting skills of the main character, Barry. In the film, Barry is a straight man who fall in love with a transgender female. In the meantime, he is a private of the United States Army. Since the rumors are spread out by Barry's roommate, Fisher, Barry starts to face some verbally abused and physically abused in the military which gives him a huge pressure.
I think this film would satisfied the fans of this genre because it shows some problems such as harassment and abused that people who have relationship with transgender usually face in the real society. Moreover, it is not easy to predict the plot and the ending of the film. Since the setting is in a military, it is really difficult to imagine that a straight handsome man would be killed by other private. The camera angle is really outstanding. The director show the blood on the wall instead of showing the whole fighting and killing scenes. Also, the storyline is outstanding. Sometimes, the film is like a comedy but sometimes it is like a tragedy. These days, not only transgender people themselves but also the people who fall in love with transgender people would be discriminated by the public.
All in all, this is a tragic film. Barry does not treat transgender people unequally; however, he is treated unfairly and discriminated in the military. I think the society should accept these people since everyone is born in different way.
Princesa (2001)
Having self-confidence is very important for everyone
Princesa is a film directed by Henrique Goldman in 2001. It tells the story of a transsexual woman who goes to Italy and works as a prostitute in order to earn money and pay for the SRS. I really like the film since it is very different from other transsexual films which I've seen before. Maybe it is because the film is released in Europe; therefore, the sexual scenes are more open and more acceptable to display to audience. I think the fans of the genre would be satisfied since it really shows the problems that transsexual people usually face in daily life. Not all transsexual people come from rich family; thus, it is really hard for poor transsexual people to pay the fee of sex change operation. However, it is really difficult for them to find a normal job since most of the people would discriminate them. The editing style is outstanding. The lighting is really dark in order to reflect the mood of corrupt life that Fernanda has. But, the lighting is getting brighter and brighter when Fernanda meets Gianni, a married businessman, which shows that Fernanda changes her lifestyle and becomes more like a normal person who has confident. The lighting is back to darkness when Fernanda leaves Gianni and goes back to her previous life as being a prostitute. Also, the director uses many short cuts during the sexually parts. The movie tries to tell viewer that people should be confident while facing problems. Fernanda loves Gianni since she feels that Gainni treats her as a real woman. However, she leaves him at the end because she does not have self confidence. Also, she knows that by doing the sex change operation, she still cannot pregnant and give Gainni a child.
Normal (2003)
There are born in this way
Normal is a drama film, in America which was released in 2003 by HBO Film. The film was written and directed by Jane Anderson. I like the movie because of the acting and the some technical qualities are really outstanding. In the film, Roy is a female who was born in a male body. He tries to face his real gender bravely after gets married with Irma for 25 years. Since he feels some struggle of being a man, he starts wearing woman's clothes, dresses and earrings in order to achieve his satisfaction; however, he is discriminated by everyone.
I think this film would satisfied the fans of this genre because it shows some problems that transgender people usually face in the real society. Also, it is not easy to predict the plot and the ending of the film. For example, Roy's wife sometimes encourage Roy to be what he is but sometimes cannot accept the fact and want her "real husband" back. Camera angle is really wonderful. The director uses many "zoom in" effect to lead audience follow emotions more. In the birthday party of Roy's father, the camera move into Roy slowly while he is crying. Not only these days, transgender and transsexual people are usually get discriminated by the public. They also need to take many kinds of medicine which is really unhealthy for them. For example, Roy takes medicine in order to make his breast bigger and fill for his satisfaction.
All in all, this is a lovely and touching film. Roy's family accept the fact supportably which represents that they love Roy a lot no matter how he is. Moreover, I think the society should not discriminate these people since they were born in this way.
Beautiful Boxer (2003)
Face you real sexuality bravely
Beautiful Boxer is a touching and meaningful Thai movie by Singapore-based director Ekachai Uekrongtham. Nong Toom's life story is the main subject of the film which is playing by Asanee Suwan, a male kick boxer in the real life. Nong Toom was a Thai boxing champion before but she is a model in Thai today.
In the movie, Nong Toom is a transsexual person who faces her real sexuality bravely. I like the film because I really admire her behavior and spirit. The fans of the genre would be satisfied since the impact of the story is really strong. It is difficult to imagine that a masculine man would choose to do a surgery in order to become a femininity lady. The storyline/ structure of the film are wonderful because it not only shows the life of Nong Toom to audience but also displays her internal talk and state of mind which is easy to understand. I can predict that the main character is a male transgender who wanted to become a woman in his childhood. However, it's still a good movie because it's fun to know how people with gender distortion are thinking and feeling. In the film, when Nong Toom was in the childhood, there are many shots about lipstick. Nevertheless, Nong Toom had interests to be a woman is not because of cosmetic but is mindset. He/She hates violence of Thai boxing but he/she loves the beauty of it. He/She joined the competitions was not because of gaining reputation but letting family to have a better life.
Beautiful Boxer relates to the society. There are few people who have gender and sexuality problem. Also, these people usually got discriminated. But, we cannot say that being a transgender or transsexual is their fault since they are born this way. "Life will take you on many roads. But only when you look inside, do you find the strength to be yourself?" and "The most difficult thing is try not to forget what you really want to be." I really like these two sentences which Nong Toom mentions when she was interviewing by a western reporter. The film tells us that if you are comfortable with the opposite sex, there is no need to be ashamed of it. Although some people would laugh behind, being what you really are is more important.
Just Like a Woman (1992)
Voice of Transvestite
Just Like A Woman is a 1992 British film by Christopher Monger. I like the film because it takes on a certain view which not many people would like to think about. A person who likes to cross-dress refers transvestite. Transvestite is a exist problem even in this modern society. However, public still treats these kinds of people differently and terribly. For example, since Gerald has transvestite, he encounters many problems inside the film. Firstly, his wife discovered female clothes spread over their flat, thus, divorced with him and threw him out of their home without knowing his habit. Secondly, Gerald got fired from company after met his boss on the street during shopping. Thirdly, when Gerald told Monica about his habit, Monica laughed loudly which hurt Gerald's pride. I think the fans of the genre would be satisfied since it includes many different sexuality problems in this film. Also it is difficult to tell and predict the plot and ending because you never know what other problems that Gerald would meet later in the film. Moreover, I like its lighting style and camera angle. When Gerald became to be Geraldine and showed to Monica the first time, the lighting style creates a mysterious mood. Camera shoots different parts of Geraldine's body image, but does not show her face immediately until the last. Besides, since everyone should be treated equally, I think the goal and motivation of the film is that they want to show the society that how these people have being discriminated. I remember that I used to have a neighbor who has a transvestite. After people noticed about his habit, some of the neighbors started to move out since they would feel uncomfortable living in the same building with him. This film tries to tell its audience that people with transvestite seems to be treated unfairly, however, transvestite is just a habit that some people have. For me, the movie does not surprise me since I saw this kind of people before. On the contrary, it persuades me to accept these people. I like the film not only because its technical quality, but also the storyline is really easy to understand. I feel the movie might be appealing for people who have transvestite or homosexual people.
Gazon maudit (1995)
Intensive lesbian film
French Twist is a 1995 French comedy film. I like the film because I personally love comedy movie. Also, it overthrow the past concept of gender relations movie. This film contrarily emphasize more about what characters' personalities have shifted during solving problems. The sexuality parts inside the movie are showed without covering. For example, there is one scene that parents kiss passionately in front of their children. European is more open with the sexuality than American or Asian because even six-year-old-child can watch it with accompanying parents or adult guardian . Therefore, I think the fans of the genre would be satisfied since it clearly shows the relationship of heterosexual and homosexual. The structure of the film is amazing since it is really difficult to predict the plots and the ending; thus, it would attracts audience to concentrate on it. Camera angle creates the mood of the scene. In a scene when Majiro first visit Loli's house, the camera focus on Majiro's chubby body first, and move to her face last. The director wants viewers to emphasis more on her body image in order to clearly show her differences from other standard women. This film support this kind of gender condition like lesbian. I think the movie tries to tell its audience that if people love each other, it is okay to be whether heterosexual or homosexual. Since I am a Asian, I was really shock and surprised after watched this movie. It displays the relationship of lesbian boldly which is really unusual in Asian country not to mention releasing in 1995. I've never have a chance to watch this kind of gender relation's movie because most of them are restricted. Therefore, I like this film since not only scenes and shots are good but also the concepts are amazing. I think the movie might be appealing for homosexual more.
