As Above, So Below (2014)
Good, but could've been better
Let me start out by saying é don't like "jump scare" horror movies, not because they bother me or anything, I just think they're a cheap trick, and this movies tries resorting to this a few times, unsuccesfuly. Good horror movies, from me, are the ones that manage to build up strong suspense without actually showing you anything violent, supernatural, creatures behind doors or anything of the sort. That said, one of the scariest part in this movie is when a character gets a panic attack from being stuck in a tight passage. For a movie that literally takes you on a ride to hell, this is clearly a fail.
Even though AA/SB is not an excellent horror movie, it still does a decent job at it. It's also a good and original "found footage" film, and it does a great job at introducing the main character, making most of her actions very believable. The rest of actors are between OK and good.
About the characters, half of them are very underdeveloped, and at a few points, the script made some of them look very unrealistic. As a viewer, you know what's going on, you know where this is going, and at a certain point in the movie, it wouldn't matter how skeptical you are about anything, you would start to heavily question your beliefs, and you would react to it. However, they never stop to talk about it or admit their situation, nor do they show it. If you were just a young explorer, you would certainly have a clear reaction upon knowing you're descending into hell.
I also think the ending should've been at least more ambiguous, did they actually get back to Paris, or did they just get into another layer of hell? That would've been a great ending. Alright, so a lot of people died, no treasure was taken, it's not exactly a happy ending, but it also seemed like the way out was too easy.
Oblivion (2013)
Forgettable
I think the main problem with this movie is that it was developed for general audiences, for everyone to watch and understand.
This movie begins with a voice-over from Tom Cruise explaining what happened to the world and his current situation, so that you start the movie knowing what's going on. As the movie goes on, EVERY single thing that you were told during the intro is basically explained again. This kinda ruins the movie a little bit. If Tom Cruise's character looked up at the destroyed moon I'd be like "What the hell happened there?", and this could have been explained in a clever way throughout the movie. But no, he's already told me why the moon is like that, so let's just get on with the story.
The story itself is OK, and the ending is maybe the best part, even though it's far from excellent.
What saves this movie is maybe the action scenes and the visual effects. It's worth the watch if you're in the mood for a brainless sci-fi action.
The Last Man on Earth (2015)
Worth the try, if you can make it to the second season
I'm just gonna resume my review here in the first paragraph, in case you don't wanna read it all. I'd guess Will Forte easily sold the pilot, which is actually very good, but then he just didn't know what to do with it as the first season went on. If you're into stupid comedies and you can make it to second season, it might be worth you're while.
This series had me in the first 3 minutes of the first episode, it was really funny up to the 3rd episode. First of, I don't know why it's called "Last man on Earth", since there are 3 male characters.
The main character is a stupid idiot but he's got some personality, you can laugh at his mistakes, but as the episodes go on, he also starts becoming an asshole, and his stupidity goes from funny to annoying. Suddenly the series starts looking like a sitcom, same format (without the audience laughs), all of the 6 characters are stupid, and the "end of the world" scenario gets basically forgotten.
Seems like it really sucks, so why am I giving it a "6"? I gave it a chance and turns out the second season is pretty good. It still feels like a sitcom, but the protagonist goes back to being likable, and the show starts to take itself a bit more seriously. Just a bit. Looks like the producers decided to view the critics about the show and "fix" it.
