Speak No Evil (2022)
Would you rather be too polite? Or dead?
This one was pretty good, about a couple who meets a stranger on vacation who then invites them to stay in his home. Already seems weird. Although there are many instances where the family should just pickup and leave they really are just too polite to leave. This one reminds me of "Nothing bad can happen" another film where our protagonist is constantly victimized and keeps returning cuz he believes these people are kind deep down. These people are so polite they don't want to be rude house guests even though this will lead them down a road of no return literally! I felt bad at the film's climax cuz I felt they kind of got what they deserved but the film does what it sets out to do provoke thought.
The Lodge (2019)
So glad this is not another mindless teen horror flick!
This film was pretty amazing cautionary tale of messing with the wrong person. I can't believe so many bad reviews? I find that younger viewers don't enjoy horror films that make you feel dread or build dark sense of mood. To do that In a film takes time to get to know characters and developing a story. It's definitely not for anyone with a short attention span that needs a jump scare every 5 mins to keep your attention. I feel films like The Lodge and Midsommar are the new school of horror films that keep you thinking long after the credits roll. It's a style that's definitely not for everyone. In a way these horror films are all grown up and not like anything else out there. It's about time horror went in a new direction.
Swallow (2019)
What bored housewives do while you work
A good story about a girl having a hard time adjusting to married life. The more she tries to assimilate to her new life the more the isolated and difficult to keep up appearances. She soon discovers something new and strange that she feels gives her a new purpose until her secret is discovered. This isn't a horror movie. It was more of a drama. Wasn't a bad movie just marketed as horror.
Un hombre violento (1984)
Valentine Trujillo's one of his best films.
This movie was one of my first exposures to Mexican ultraviolet exploitation. This is an amazing story and gritty action. The story is about 2 brothers Julian Carrera(Trujillo) and his kid brother grow up with their degenerate gambler father, mom is nowhere in sight as far as they know she abandoned them. One day the father wins big gambling and is murdered Julian is bent on revenge. And soon realizes that violence only breeds more violence as he tries to do the right thing to keep his brother on the right path death is pacing one step behind him at every turn, ultimately leading To the films bloody climax and confronting his mother and the ugly truth about his father.
Halloween (2018)
Not so much horror, but more a revenge flick
I thought this film was good as a revenge flick that had horror/slasher elements to it. The film I thought took more of a look at Laurie Strode and how as a survivor and victim she has been affected and how her family has coped with her. It definitely is marketed as more of a horror movie. The only real complaint I have is how does Michael Myers get reunited with his mask? That part just seemed like too much of a coincidence. Maybe it'll be answered in a director's cut later on dvd.
