Haunting Picture of America's War on Terror
24 July 2008
After finishing this movie, I had to let out a deep breath. I did not know how to take it all in or much more review it. Usually, I don't review movies but I have noticed that I usually forget the plot of certain movies after a while. Well this is one plot I did not want to forget. This movie all in all felt like a paradox of being disturbingly haunting; So many things we want to look away from but they still linger with us.

In the movie we follow a man (Tommy Lee Jones) in search of his son who has been missing from his post in the army. Tommy Lee Jones gives a wonderful performance as the father who never gives up and uses so much undermined knowledge to find his son. There is a very interesting metaphor Haggis (writer/director of award wining "crash") makes in the film and that is of David and Goliath. Tommy Lee's character as well as the character played by Charlize Theron both face these symbolic unstoppable forces, that even though they can't be brought down they can certainly be handled with, no matter the size. Charlize plays the detective, who is the only woman in her precinct, that helps tommy lee find his son. While he faces the apathy of many to find his son and the dehumanizing factor of America's politics, she faces sexism in the workforce.

I initially thought it moved a bit slow but every part of the movie pieces together really well to a very MEANINGFUL LAST SCENE in the end.

Amazing Scenery & Atmosphere
5 September 2007
I just caught this movie last night on a Mystery movie channel. The fact that Stephen King wrote the original novel immediately sparked my interest. The synopsis also sounded intriguing and different from what we are used to seeing Stephen King do. From the beginning of the movie, we are introduced to this dreary and dark atmosphere in a cold island of Maine. The first few scenes are reminiscent of a classical film noir - where you have your typical opening murder scene that leads to an interrogation scene in a police department's office. That's just what you have in the beginning of Dolores Claiborne and it was indeed the perfect way to start off such an amazing movie like this one. We are introduced to a mystery that only paves way for other mysteries in the plot. The setting of the movie goes perfect with the story. We go back and forth with very colorful scenes of the past and very dark scenes of the present. As a viewer you almost become scared of finding out what really happened. Is Dolores a murderer or no? and also, What other secrets can she be holding? Kathy Bates gives an amazing performance and throughout the movie you realize only she was able to pull of the role of a strong, long suffering woman. I was BLOWN AWAY by Judit Pafitt's performance of the demanding boss. We begin to see her as a strong self-assured lady, and back and forth through the flashback scenes we can see how vulnerable she really is. Her chemistry with Bates is truly unforgettable. The only slight problem I had with the movie is Jennifer Jason Leigh's performance, which gradually gets better throughout the movie but is definitely not up to par with the rest of the cast in the first half. In the last half of the movie, we become more sympathetic with her character and at the same time we can detect that she understands her character better.

Overall, a 9 out of 10 for this amazing movie of secrets, redemption, but most of all the many layers of a woman.

Corruption, Romance and Deceit

Her aunt Vicenta, a poor and bitter woman, brought her up in the slums of Caracas with two sons. Meanwhile, Emiliano Andara, her father, has become an important personality in the country's political destiny. Eating Out (I) (2004)

Tired of Really Bad Gay Movies
4 June 2006
Some writers are trying so hard to create good gay drama or for that matter good gay comedies...they simply don't understand that there is a fine line between gay comedies and gay drama...most gay movies nowadays have nothing to do with real life...very few actually get a point across and deal more with real life... Eating Out is a terrible movie...the acting is pretty bad, the actors have no chemistry and all the performances seem forced and just out of sync...the plot is all over the place and is one of those movies that make the overused, ridiculous and dumb assumption that "anyone can go gay."

Crap like "Eating Out" should be banned...movies like this create an illusive yet really ridiculous scenarios that anyone and everyone can be gay for the sake of entertainment or whatever in the movie...And It Doesn't Work...this movie goes down the line with "Eating Out" "Prom Queen" and "Touch of Pink" and "testosterone"---as all really Bad gay movies...i know there's tons of good and bad str8 movies...but considering that movies with gay themes have less opportunities to go mainstream and on the big screen...at least writers should make an effort to make them better than the rest so they can stand out and More people can see them and not just gay people....oh and that other movie "Ski trip" about the black gay guys who well go on a ski trip...which they keep showing on logo channel...is a horrible movie (they were just begging for laughs in this movie...the flamboyant guys didn't look gay at all and in one part some guy is eating his buggers...out of nowhere..so tasteless and stupid!) I just saw "Brother to Brother" and "The Mudge Boy" (although this one wasn't so much about being gay)...as well as "Brokeback mountain" which were all great awesomely gay movies...they were real and easy to relate to! with all this talk about gay issues i think films with gay themes owe it to themselves to make their films both plausible, entertaining and ways to relate to a wide spectrum of people...

Sex is a wonderful thing with the opposite or same sex...but i am really tired of the gratuitous sex scenes in some of these gay movies...they are absurd and dumb...once again watching "eating out" made me wanna throw up! Queer as folk was a good series overall...but it was just too much gratuitous and senseless sex...it made it extremely difficult for me to watch as a gay man..can u imagine a str8 person? there was no reason for that whatsoever...and the fact that they had like 5 seasons and there wasn't a single minority in the show with actual drama was just Appalling...considering that gay minorities in America deal with double the problems! that one show "Noah's arc" in Logo was awful too...just really really bad!

Great Acting - Good Try But Needed More!!
16 April 2006
I just saw La Mujer De Mi Hermano and I may sound a bit biased since I am a huge Barbara Mori fan, but as always I thought she was great...but the real treat here was Christian Meier, he really seems to have evolved as an actor with every character he does. The ending is a powerful one and all three actors come in true sync with their respective characters. This is the second film Meier has done, based on a Jaime Bayly character and here he hits a bang! All three main characters are subtle yet very effective with their portrayals..simply amazing, chic and sexy all throughout.

I had a slight problem with the fact that sex was a little bit overdone...It somehow felt that some of the sex talk scenes took away from the actual story and felt more like a filler than to have any substantial purpose. This was one of the main reasons I would rate this movie a 7.5 out of 10...It was a great movie that had a great pacing for the surprise finale and I was a bit baffled about one of the character's actions after he discovers something very significant to the story (which I will not give away.) Manolo Cardona was also great and the imperfections of his character came alive through the screen.

I did not see this movie with subtitles so I am not sure what non-Spanish speaking folks read, but I do have to say that it is understandable why many American critics will slander this film. Is because they don't understand that Hispanic films don't deal with some of the American topics on film in a daily basis. Americans and Europeans make tons of films about rape, incest, murder and every possible sick thing imaginable, which is why it might seem like a joke that something like La Mujer De Mi Hermano will cause marvel to the Hispanic audience. Spanish-speaking films seldomly deal with these topics and do not have such a big history with sleek, smart & taboo films, so they should definitely take that into consideration when rating the film.

Overall, I felt as I needed more...More thought-provoking dialogue, but it did justice to the Jaime Bayly novels, which rather speak for themselves rather than providing revolutionary sayings.

A Delectable Dream!
2 February 2006
I just watched the movie "What dreams may come" and I should say it was one of the most scenic treats yet emotionally fulfilling movies I have seen. It is filled with wonderful scenes of heaven and a dark interesting view of hell. What I loved most about the movie is its' theme that heaven can be whatever you want it to be; It is the true realization of our dreams and the extent of our imaginations personified in our own paradise. People have the choice to reincarnate as well as exercising their passions to their full potentials.

I was watching "The 40 year old Virgin" the other day and there was a scene where one of the characters talk about how great it is to watch the movie "Ghandi" when they're high on marijuana. If "Ghandi" indeed strikes our intellectual capacity while high, then watching "What Dreams May come" will stimulate both your intellectual, emotional and your sense of sight to its maximum level. The movie itself is a natural high. Director Vincent Ward has created a delight to our visual and creative senses in order to give us a different take on what may be awaiting for us. And what else do we ask of that one blunt we choose to inhale? We ask that it take us away, that it might bring us to a different dimension and give us an alternative to the unfair life that we live in. "What Dreams may come" does just that. Like a great movie should do, it takes you away somewhere else and keeps you at the edge of your seat to see what new area of heaven will the characters will explore.

Cuba Gooding Jr. does a wonderful job as Robin Williams' angel. His soothing voice and distinct voice gives heaven a serene yet human tone. The human tone that hints our yearning to remain humans, filled with emotion and character, even when in heaven. Robin Williams portrays that human quality, when we can clearly see his satisfaction in heaven yet a drive that keeps him going to find his wife. The search for his wife in hell becomes the plot of this movie, which greatly weaves the unbearable human emotion of loss with the beautiful unknown destiny of our humanity. "What Dreams May come" portrays the virtue of being hopeful and that once we lose that hope we may succumb to a dangerous path in life.

Indeed, "What Dreams May Come" is a beautiful painting waiting to be discovered.

Excellent Teen Soap
18 January 2006
I remember watching this around the sumer of 1999 when it was released in the US through Univision at noon. All the characters were amazing, starting with Gaby Espino who played an excellent role as the rich girlfriend of the character Adrian.

The story revolved mainly around the love triangle of Adrian, Linda and Natalia (Gaby Espino). Linda is Adrian's best friend and they have an unbelievable great amount of chemistry on screen. Both of the villains played amazing roles as well, specially Erika who's mere look let everyone know that she was one evil temptress. The parents also played convincingly. Adrian's mother was excellent and Linda's mother played a very funny yet eccentric person just like her daughter.

I wish this would have been released in DVD,because is one of the last few good Venezuelan Telenovelas.
