Girl in the Basement (2021)
Has to be seen to be believed.
Saw a quick promo for this on youtube, thought it looked like your average obsessive love/kidnapping/hostage Lifetime TV movie. I decided to watch it because it had Judd Nelson, and boy I'm half-wishing I didn't.
I will say this film quite surprised me. When it comes to Lifetime, the films that get to me are the ones that do the most shocking and the most taboo, and this was one for the films. Not a lot of the classic cliches you usually see in the other hostage situations.
There was a good level of acting from everyone involved, and I legit felt scared for everyone in the film. Just when you think the situation gets worse, it does and I just found my mind repeatedly getting blown every ten minutes because it does things you wouldn't suspect. Even scarier when I found out that it was loosely based off something that actually happened to a poor girl in Austria.
I have to glaring complaints, though.
1.
I wish there was a little bit more done with the father to explain his behavior. Not to make us feel sympathy for him, but to make him a bit more three dimensional. Aside from being in a unhappy marriage, I never felt like there was a legit reason for him going after his daughter. I felt like we could have dedicated some time to that rather than pushing the envelope.

You can't expect me to believe that Stefanie Scott stays the same age while her kids are supposed to be teenagers. If it were me I would have either gotten an older actresses that could pass for an 18 year old, or just swap out the current actress with an older actress as the film progressed. Or just shortening the time setting of the film (it is fictionalized right, so do what you can to make it believable). But that's it.
Overall fantastic work in bring a bone-chilling, and psychologically unnerving film Lifetime. I will say this is certainly not for everyone for obvious reasons.
You Get Me (2017)
Very cliché, but definitely worth a watch
A great Netflix original film. While it's cliché and predictable, I was really impressed with the visual effects that gave it such a surreal feeling. While the acting was sub-par, it had a very well-rounded cast that delivered when needed. And Bella Thorne made a perfect psychotic villain.
