Gettysburg (1993)
Very true to the book
They've done a remarkable job of following the narrative as laid out in the brilliant book of Michael Shaara, Killer Angels. It is easy to critique a period piece created before the era of accessible CGI. The lack of extras to serve as the dead on the fields on July 2 and 3, the fake beards, and some awful accents. Despite all of this, it delivers as an exceptional movie on the history of maybe the most pivotal 3 days in American history since our founding. Jeff Daniels and Sam Elliott are great.
Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018)
One of the best movies I've ever seen
All the feels. But, as effective this movie is at drawing out emotions that range from the heights of joy to the depths of sorrow at the hurt we cause upon each other, every aspect of this documentary is equally brilliant. This is a masterpiece of story-telling. I can not recommend this movie enough, for everyone from 13 to 130.
Land of Smiles (2014)
Window into Larger, Darker World
A well-written short story that briefly hints at personal stories and backgrounds while also revealing some of the ugliest realities about the world and the sinister side of humanity. Women are brought, against their will, into a level of living that no person should endure. While the world turns away its eyes, a multi-billion dollar industry continues the devastating work of turning beauty into something base and deviled. This story shows one persons attempts to redeem life and story.
I love the attention to detail and the liberating message. I appreciate the great job of casting and the use of lighting throughout to help the story.
May this story, and the efforts of many, bring about change in the world. May we all show up in the places where right needs some help to win over wrong.
