The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Masterpiece
Among the Oscar nominees for best film of 2023, this film was definitely one of the big positive surprises for me.
If it were possible I would give all the awards to the main actors of the plot, they all deliver an impeccable performance. The film's script is wonderful, which in turn is uniquely peculiar, it even seems like something scripted by Yorgos Lanthimos.
However, it is not just the script that the film is based on, the entire production and photography direction of the film is impeccable, taking us on a wonderful journey to, until then unknown to me, the wonderful island of Inisherin.
Pearl (2022)
Insane
Along with Barbarian, it is among the best horror films of this year. In addition to a beautiful editing, script and production design, the film clearly pays homage to 1920s cinema.
Mia Goth is impeccable, as always, in every scene she appears, she manages to convey the deepest emotion in acting. The final monologue is worthy of numerous awards for her, the intensity with which she acted in this scene is incredible.
Despite the movie being a little too slow, it didn't disappoint me, but for some people this can be one of the factors that they don't like this movie.
I thought Pearl was better than X, one of the few films where the "sequel" is better than the original film.
Verdens verste menneske (2021)
a woman who wants to be free
The story of a woman who is imperfect, but imperfect for what society imposes, the main character just wants to follow her instincts and live life as it suits her.
Doraibu mai kâ (2021)
Life has to go on
I still haven't created any review of the films nominated for this year's Oscars. But this one I found interesting to write about this one in question.
Despite being a movie with extremely extensive dialogues, which makes it very tiring in some scenes, it is a movie that somehow holds you because there is no clear script, it is just the life of the protagonist following its course after the death of his wife. Loved.
The film presents some very interesting subjectivities, especially those involving Oto.
I consider it one of the best of this year and I believe it will win the Oscar for best international film.
Martyrs (2008)
Shocking
Shocking. I believe that's the only word that comes to mind when I've finished watching the movie.
With a spectacular plot that takes your breath away at every moment and with that feeling of "What's going to happen now? Why is this happening?" presents one of the most harrowing and thoughtful climaxes I have ever seen in my life.
The Woman in the Window (2021)
Bad Plot
The premise of the film is very interesting, from the beginning to the middle of the film it holds you in a very captivating way, the whole plot around the main character who has depression and other psychological problems, in my opinion, is well developed. I really believe that if the film focused on the character's health picture and didn't engage in meaningless explanations during its climax, surely the film would be much better enjoyed. The script is at times opportunistic, without even bothering to disguise the facilities that are played on the screen to proceed with the story. And yet when it comes to the script, the most absurd thing is that when it reaches its climax the script is totally lost, the final explanations are meaningless, the motivation of the supposed "antagonist" of the story is even more meaningless and all that story about the investigation and curiosity of the protagonist loses its charm and we end up falling into the deepest sea of clichés.
Cazuza: O Tempo Não Pára (2004)
Disappointing
As a Brazilian, I grew up listening to Cazuza, where his songs marked my childhood and that of many Brazilians. I didn't know much about his personal life and I believe that most Brazilians didn't know much either, besides the fact that he was bisexual.
The film came up with the proposal to, precisely, tell about his personal life until his musical rise. The proposal is very interesting and reading it like that, nothing could go wrong, as there were many mistakes in my view.
The script at the beginning of the film is extremely fast and confusing in many moments, in some scenes you wonder who this character is and what he is doing there and what is his importance to the story. His musical rise was left in parallel, there was nothing to show that, he just started to progress his career out of the blue.
The actor who played Cazuza is excellent, his acting was wonderful, but his lines were full of figures of speech and ready-made effect phrases that Cazuza himself would speak, but not all the time in any dialogue he had with someone.
I believe the film would have had a lot of potential if it hadn't failed at these points, if the script hadn't been less confusing and shown more clearly its rise in musical life to its decline with AIDS.
Los adoptantes (2019)
Almost good
The proposal that the film presents is quite interesting, showing the difficulties of adopting a child by an LGBT couple and the internal conflicts between the couple in relation to adoption.
However, the film presents a somewhat dubious story development: Decisions made by the protagonists that can be categorized as "lazy script", some characters that were supposed to be the comic relief end up being irritating and secondary stories that were shown without a properly elaborated construction.
It's a good movie to pass the time, it could be better if the film's production team were less lazy.
I See You (2019)
Surprisingly wonderful
I believe that the key point of this film is the script with its plot-twists. They are very well constructed, so that the viewer is guided and manipulated by the moment.
A great horror film, with some clichés fully justified by the mastery of the script.
Minari (2020)
Delicate
Delicate, smooth and strong ... How far can a father's dream in search of the best for his children and his wife go? Is "American dream" ideal for them even though they are not Americans?
The script does not deliver much of the story developed, it is very slow and I believe that this is one of the minimum problems in the film, it takes time to walk and when it walks insists on not delivering much. The focus of the film is on the family relationship and simply shows the day-to-day life of each one.
The father has his reasons and reasons as well as the mother has her reasons too, but there is no balance between them and the family pillar that there should be ends up being disrupted by the parents themselves.
A good film from the A24 studio, which never disappoints in its distributions, but to be seen only once.
Nomadland (2020)
It's to think...
Where will we find our happiness? Where will we leave our loneliness? Is creating a family along the lines of the "american dream" really a reason to be happy?
I believe that what the film wants to go through is exactly these questions. We may not be prepared to accept what is not common, which is not casual for us. Why be a nomad? Why be a nomad by choice? All these questions only the protagonist can answer and maybe she doesn't even know the answer. He just appreciates the fact that he goes aimlessly somewhere, for no reason and that's fine... And that is exactly what the film wants to go through, it is her choice and it is all right to want to live like this.
A great movie to think about our lives, to think about what make us happy, what do we have to leave behind to move on. Certainly not a movie for everyone.
The Father (2020)
How wonderful... How magical...
I'm at a loss for words, I just can't describe the mix of emotions I felt watching this movie. The editing of the film is wonderful, in the beginning everything seems very confusing, in fact, until the end of the film many of the things are still confused. However, I believe that this is what the film wants to go through when we watch it, this is how it goes in the head of a person with Alzheimer's, this is really how he feels ... Confused, confused with everything, confused with his feelings and confused why people don't understand what happens to them.
It is certainly one of the best films I have ever seen in my life, it is about a daughter's true love towards her father, it is about the obstacles that she has to face in relation to her illness and the extent to which she could take it this ... After all, we are all human, nobody is made of iron and to what extent can we endure situations like these by someone we love?
I really hope this movie wins some Oscars, I will advise everyone!
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Great!
I went to watch the movie thinking it was one thing and in the end it was another. But, I say this in a positive sense, the film surprised me in some moments, mainly the final plot twist. The photograph is very beautiful, I am surprised that I am not competing for this category at the Oscars. The script is kind of silly, but very well executed.
Sound of Metal (2019)
Powerful and Sensitive
Impactful from beginning to end. The film's sound direction is impeccable and deserves the Oscar for best sound.
The script of the film is very well constructed, especially in relation to the passage of time, which are not expositive but do not leave the viewer confused with everything that is happening.
I loved the fact that the protagonist accepted his condition throughout the film. The ending of the film was wonderful with the metaphor that God is in the quietest places.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)
Lazy script with good actors.
The acting of the actors is wonderful, especially Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis, but the script does not help the film. It seems that the film does not move, they are endless dialogues between them just to show their performances. A typical film just to compete for the Oscars and nothing more.
Knives Out (2019)
Wonderful!
Amazing how the legacy of the wonderful Agatha Christie was well represented in this film. Instigating from start to finish, with good character development, it keeps the viewer attentive in a splendid script. With several plot twists this film is certainly one of the best and best represented of Christie's works.
Interstellar (2014)
PERFECT, PERFECT, PERFECT MOVIE
The film goes on from the beginning that love transcends barriers and it is simply love that is the life force of the universe. The film for me is wonderful, with a magnificent soundtrack (including one of my favorites so far) and with a great rhythm.
Mononoke-hime (1997)
Wonderful!
More than 20 years after the release of this work, which I had the opportunity to watch thanks to Netflix, which is making all the films of this wonderful studio available.
Certainly Princess Mononoke is among my favorite films and along with Spirited Away are my favorites at Studio Ghibli.
Those who have not yet watched, give an opportunity to watch this marvel of animation !!
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Lazy script movie
The film has visual effects and a flawless soundtrack, elements that never occurred in decay to franchise levels. Now when it comes to the script ... What was everything that happened halfway through the movie on? As the script's inventions of justifying such acts because of the "oh I knew where he was because I just felt" force, that extremely rough end of the kiss between Ray and Kyle. Anyway, extremely lazy script, packed with fan service to please fans who do not accept change, bet more of the same and forgot to risk something grand, unique and epic.
Wounds (2019)
One of the worst movies I've ever seen in my whole life
I don't know what I have to say about this movie. I think this "thing" couldn't be called a movie so bad it is.
The script doesn't make any sense, we see a lot of characters but no one add something in the story. Story... I even don't know this movie has a "story" because it leads nowhere!!!!
Anyway... Bad, terrible, deplorable are the words I could define this "thing".
Gisaengchung (2019)
The best movie of the year!
I just watched the movie and found it simply wonderful. It is a mix of moments that happen as fun, joy, tensions and sadness. The climax scenes of the movie are breathtaking and all extremely well fitting, you realized it was no trick of the script to make those scenes happen, everything flowed very well. I'm amazed at the movie, a lot of people need to see this work for yesterday!
NOTE: The counterpoint of the rain scene is "because of the rain the rich can't get to camp" and "because of the rain the poor are obliged to camp (in the gym)"
