October Baby (2011)
Good but predictable and slow
This movie is well made, well acted, and has heart...
Unfortunately, it is SLOOOWWW PACED and rather predictable. A teen girl finds out that she's adopted. She goes on a road trip to find her birth mother. When something is actually happening that matters, the movie is entertaining. Unfortunately, the movie is inundated with spans of quiet...For example, early on there is a scene in a library where we have 8 seconds of a young man walking up the stairs and then joining his friend at a table... That 8 seconds might not seem like a big deal, but multiply the movie is riddled with those 'empty spaces.' I think if the director removed those 'empty spaces' the movie would have a good pace.
Now, to be clear, it is ultimately a heart-warming and touching film. If you have patience, you'll likely enjoy the movie.
The Cold Light of Day (2012)
A good and solid movie
I enjoyed this movie... I'm actually surprised I took time to watch it because of all the bad reviews I've read. I expected a boring and completely predictable movie that moved at a snail's pace... I was wrong...
1: The storyline is pseudo-predictable, but how many movies involving CIA agents aren't? Nonetheless, it still has enough twists to keep you guessing a bit. 2: The acting is excellent. Think about it... Bruce Willis AND Sigourney Weaver... 3: The technical aspects of the movie (cinematography, special effects, etc.) are excellent. 4: It has a good pace. It slows down in places but only to reveal more of the storyline...
It's a good solid movie. I recommend it.
Janie Jones (2010)
Rock and Roll Star meets his 13 year old daughter
I loved this movie.
If you talk to people who have seen this movie, or read reviews, you will likely hear two things: 1: The story is an old one (cliche even) and 2: The ending is predictable.
To be honest, this is absolutely true. And yet, you should watch this movie. It really is completely wonderful. The technical aspects of the movie are excellent; the acting, script, cinematography, etc... There are EXCELLENT actors and actresses in this movie.
My one complaint, if you can really call it that, is the profanity. The language at times was such that I couldn't watch this with my 11 year old daughter. However, to be fair, the profanity wasn't 'gratuitous' in any way. The male lead character is a rock and roll star on tour. As such, things like drinking, drugs, sex, and profanity are expected. To portray a rock and roll band touring small clubs across the country without the use of profanity would make it unreal like a Disney film.
The bottom line is this, This is a great movie. It will disturb you a little, break your heart a little, and then warm your heart GOBS.
I recommend this movie, big time.
Fair Game (2010)
An excellent movie. The story lines up with the facts
This is quite simply an excellent movie.
Let's get the basics out of the way: The story is true. The acting is excellent. The movie is technically outstanding...
This movie tells the true story of how The Bush Administration intentionally released the identification of a CIA agent whose husband (who happened to be an ambassador) told the truth about the Bush administration lying about weapons of mass destruction.
By exposing a covert CIA operative, the Bush administration sent a clear message to anyone else who might be brave enough to reveal the truth.
I remember hearing the news about these events when they were actually happening. Even then it was obvious what was happening. This movie spells it out clearly.
I applaud it and recommend it completely.
Safe House (2012)
Technically it's a very good movie...but...
Overall, the movie is okay...
The acting is excellent... The story telling is good... The look of the movie is good...
but...
It gets slow in parts. It reminds of me of Roman Polanski's old movies where he would say, pan a wall for what seemed like hours...no dialog, no new details...just 'look at this wall...for...a...very...long...time...'
I'd guess about a fourth of this movie could just be cut away, and that would improve it greatly.
My only other complaint is that it just doesn't seem to bring anything new...
So, overall, it is an okay movie... It's just slow in parts, and the story doesn't seem to have surprises..
Soldiers of Fortune (2012)
Sooo Freaking Bad
I cannot fathom how so much talent could have been used to make a movie this bad... It boggles the mind.
Christian Slater - Robin Hood, Broken Arrow, The West Wing Sean Bean - LOTR, James Bond, Troy, National Treasure James Cromwell - Babe, Star Trek-First Contact, The Green Mile Dominic Monaghan - LOTR, Lost Colm Meaney - Star Trek Generations and DS9, Con Air, The Commitments Ving Rhames - Mission Impossible
How do you take such a talented cast and make such a bad movie?
I suppose you do a bad job of directing, fill the movie with tired cliché, make battle scenes that appear like paint pellet championships, and skimp on things like special effects and stuntmen. The movie honestly has the look and feel of a 70s cop series...
The first few minutes is filled with a action/battle scene that I 'honestly' thought they would reveal to be a rich man's paint pellet fantasy game... But no... it was supposed to be an actual American soldier (Christian Slater) shooting his way through bad guys to rescue one of his men... It was SOOO bad...
The first scene pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the movie... I'm sorry to say.
I'm not an actor or director. I'm just a normal guy, but I cannot see how this much talent could have made such a bad movie... No disrespect intended.
The Tree of Life (2011)
Mindnumbingly boring and painstakingly slow
I mean no disrespect to the actors or crew involved in this movie. In fact, I think it had the potential to be a great movie; it simply is not.
Perhaps I'm simply not enlightened, educated, or avant-garde enough to 'appreciate' the hidden brilliance in this film.
For me, the movie was VERY slow and VERY boring. This movie actually makes movies like Emma and Little Women seem like action thrillers. It reminded me of certain movies from the 70s in which the director, for some reason, would choose to pan along a wall, silently, for a good 30 to 60 seconds... No sound, no dialogue, no important points with regard to the plot. It simply 'was.' I suspect that if one took out the silent 'panning' of random places and events from this movie, the story would not change one iota and the length of this film would be less than half its length; maybe even less. And NO, I AM NOT joking about that; I'm being literal.
If, however, you enjoy lengthy scenes of people silently walking in non-nondescript settings then you will flat out LOVE this movie. That's just not my thing.
I like movies that have dialogue and a point.
