The Legend of Ben Hall (2017)
Impressive, enjoyable and informative
Living in the UK I knew nothing about the subject of this film and watched it purely as I had it on PC. I was very impressed by all aspects of the production. It held my attention from the start and told me a lot about a period of Australian history I knew little about. The film didn't make tremendous efforts to persuade you to like the characters, which I approved of, it let you decide. Scenery, dialogue, acting was all top notch.
Oddly enough the thing that made the biggest impression on me in terms of realism was that the majority of bullets fired at various characters actually missed!! It is rare for this to happen in a film when usually every shot hits a target and it made such a refreshing change for an accurate portrayal of shoot outs to be shown.
I also read that this film started with a crowdfunding campaign so all credit to everyone involved for making such an excellent film - big studios would do well to take note - you don't need millions to make a damn good film!!
Earthfall (2015)
One of the few films I couldn't even complete I'm afraid
I managed to sit through around 20 minutes of this film before the appalling script, rather poor acting and unimpressive special effects proved too much for me.
Some of the early dialogue was abysmal and totally unconvincing which made the characters saying it also unconvincing. I couldn't find one central character with whom I could invest or relate too - a fatal flaw in any movie of this type.
I watch a lot of films covering many genres and like sci-fi especially but after being spoilt by TV series like Falling Skies and Defiance - to mention two examples - the mediocrity of this offering was highlighted even more.
I almost never give up on a film but in this case I really didn't care what happened as I have better things to do with my life.
I'm sure others may enjoy it - but not me.
The Gallows (2015)
Watchable
I'm not usually a fan of found footage style movies and I admit I watched this because I read the review on the page which happened to be one of the 10 star ones! It was watchable and I didn't want to stop viewing even though there are some inconsistencies in the plot. I wouldn't watch it again though.
There are the usual bits where the camera shows things that couldn't be seen if it was hand held by one person and the almost permanent low light or black became a bit irritating at times but as I said above - it was watchable.
The most interesting fact for me is that the estimated budget was $100,000 but it has so far grossed almost $23m - a better percentage return than many high budget movies which makes me wonder what made so many people want to go watch it.
Crime Spree (2003)
A very enjoyable 90 minutes, well worth watching
I saw this film with no prior knowledge other than the IMDB summary and thought it was great. I then read the user comment posted here and couldn't believe they were talking about the same film. It takes a lot to make me laugh out loud but this film managed it on a number of occasions. I didn't have a criticism with the plot or acting and enjoyed the various predicaments the main characters found themselves in. Maybe it's my sense of humour but I really enjoyed it and will certainly watch it again and recommend it.
