Whore 2 (1994)
If the viewer genuinely has an interest in the gritty life of prostitutes, they will have a unique experience.
This is by no means a great film, but there is something poignant and honest about it. It is marketed as sexy film and the poster has nothing to do with the film. It should not have been titled what it is. (I thought it was funny that Netflix would not let me write the title of the movie in this review.) Basically, it's a gritty docudrama about a writer who is writing a book on prostitution. As a writer myself, I felt for the main character. All but I think 3 out of the women are truly prostitutes who play themselves. Although I do not go to prostitutes, I have met and known some when I lived in New York City. In the early 90's, Times Square and other sections were filled with prostitutes and drug use. There is nothing sexy about this film. The realism of the prostitutes playing themselves make this truly worth watching this film. The relationship between the writer and the 2 actresses (playing prostitutes) give the film it's heart. The writer is not looking to exploit these women nor is he looking for sex. He genuinely cares. His compassion, respect, and concern for them is what gives hope. These women have been degraded and feel worthless. He treats them with respect and befriends them. He even begins to fall in love with one of them. The fictional aspect of the ending has it's unbelievable moments, but I understand why it was done that way. The acting is not horrible, but it's decent enough in the right places. It is a somewhat sweet film in a very ugly setting. Even the pretty women (and there are not many) look worn out and weathered. Unfortunately, due to the false marketing and title of this film, it has been overlooked. If the viewer goes into this film, thinking that they will be turned on, they will be disappointed. If the viewer genuinely has an interest in the gritty life of prostitutes, they will have a unique experience.
Style Wars (1983)
Simply the best documentary about the birth of hip-hop culture
"Style Wars" is a certified classic that kept viewers intrigued for more than 20 years. The documentary is beautifully honest, exceptionally gritty, intensely fair, and wonderfully lively. While many hip-hop films will be forgotten, "Style Wars" remains the essential document for graffiti and hip-hop. True lovers of hip-hop must respect these artists who paved the way. This film educates us of a time and place when hip-hop inspired creativity, created peace within a dangerous atmosphere, connected races, and established the birth of a youthful urban culture. The movement's futility is a fascinating aspect. An artist's work could last forever on a canvas, but they choose to paint trains that may be washed or painted over within days. With little or no profit, the graffiti movement remains a vital aspect of hip-hop. If you don't believe me, ask Krs-One. There is something inside these revolutionary artists that transcends all cultural and societal limits. What makes these artists risk their lives (third rail, beef) or their freedom (police) to paint on a train that will be washed or painted over? Regardless of how futile their effort may be, their need to express themselves is the main element which empowers the culture. "Style Wars" is the classic definitive film that poignantly captures the birth of hip-hop. Ignore the toys! This Sunday evening, put on your gloves and your hoody, bring a couple of cans of Krylon, and go bombing for the fame!

A Clockwork Orange (1971)
A beautiful yet horrifying epic of ultraviolence!
A beautiful yet horrifying epic of ultraviolence! Weird, funny, disgusting and a breath of fresh air. Even with the 70's image of the future, this movie still looks magnificient and is still cutting edge. From youth-gone-wild to the government mind control themes, this movie is simply amazing! One of Kubrick's best! (along with Dr. Strangelove & The Shining). Some say that it is too long but epics usually are! We follow Alex from a horrible gang member to a rapist and murderer to a reformed victim! It is a rollercoaster ride of guilt and violence. The viewer has hate and love for the narrator. A Clockwork Orange is unlike any film out there!
