The Rig (2023)
I was expecting the tardis to appear- spoilers ahead
Why does UK sci fi always seem to resemble DR Who. Unconvincing cheap SFX and complete lack of mystery . It would have been better without the sci fi elements. The actors were good and deserved a better story and . Script. The hutton character, was there to provide a bit of tension, but a bit too much scenery chewing. And would all gay men feel compelled to tell a medic that they once spent a night with the person they were examining. This seemed really crass . If they wanted to show that the character was gay, couldnt he have given him a hug . In someways this was a bit like a kiddies.version of The Thing.
Tin Star (2017)
does not justify the hype - don't invest your time.
Episode 1 was good , but this quickly went downhill. Why cant the British do the mini series with same level originality as their American counterparts. apart from Tim Roth, the other British actors were unconvincing luvvies that did not help me to suspend disbelief. .
loaded with clichés, and the behaviour of the characters in the final episode was ludicrous and unbelievable, considering what had gone before. i know its not a documentary, but the actors should at least be convincing and consistent in their behaviour
this one not only jumped the shark , it came back and did a fosberry flop
Tim Roth and Christopher Heyerdahl were great, Christina Hendricks was not given much to do , it could have been anyone in this part.
i gave it two for the scenery
Coffin (2011)
Good thriller - shows what a bit imagination can do with a small budget - spoilers
really liked this film, a small budget does not always mean tacky straight to video slasher type stuff. i didn't guess the plot, which made it more enjoyable. The actors kept the plot moving, with no filler scenes and Bruce Davidson always adds class to support roles.
*****spoiler spoiler
One question and plot hole when Jack kicks Trick out of the car, trick makes a call and says 'he (jack) has taken the money'. i thought for a minute trick took it when he hit the banker, but he didn't have the money. So... how did he manage to give it to rona and sean ?. maybe the small budget didn't allow for a re shoot - but never mind, hopefully the makers will get enough receipts for a sequel
The Blank Generation (1976)
lets not be too hard on the film makers -its better than nothing
I've not seen this movie, but i remember it got trashed in reviews in the late 1970s when it was shown. i fully agree that it was exceptionally dumb (pardon the pun) of the filmmakers to make a music documentary without any sound. at least we have the footage. if they hadn't done this we might be saying 'if only there was some footage of the ramones in 1976.....' at least we have that. and i'm sure the filmmakers did not think that people would be griping about paying full price for it 35 years later i do recall the intention was to shoot with synchronised sound and the sound didn't get recorded or something - may be i'm wrong it has to go down as one of the great heroic failures of the music world along with the guy who shot 10 minutes or so of the Beatles last concert, but used all of his film on shooting footage of people building the stage in an empty stadium.
In a Lonely Place (1950)
different ending of movie
BEWARE SPOILERS !! in the DVD extras, the documentary says that the original ending was that Dix murdered laurel and that the ending was changed on the spot to the one that we are familiar with. A brilliant decision to resist the temptation of a 'twist' ending. But was it a spontaneous decision to chnage the ending If you look at the trailer on the DVD extras, there appears to be another ending with laurel getting the phone call and running to Dix and embracing him - does anyone know if this was a serious ending or was it just shot for the trailer to give the appearance of a more conventional romance ? I think this is bogart's most complex performance - it actually makes one feel sympathetic to his inability to control himself. if they remade it now it would end with him going to counselling.
