The Split (2018)
The Best of The Best British Television Series
I don't know why it is that American written and acted TV series can never reach this level of drama, interest, perfection in dialogue and acting, writing, directing, and all the other things about The Split that are just riveting. I think Nicola Walker is one of, if not, the best actresses in the English language. I know everyone in the U. S. raves about Meryl Streep, but she and Nicola are definitely on the same level. The casting of this show is just so perfect, from the main characters of Hanna, Christy, Nina, Ruth, and especially Xander. And the writing is superb! There are so many small, but realistic twists to the plot, some great things, like an affair that shatters a marriage, and others small, but so meaningful to the characters. This is one of those shows, those stories where you, the viewer, becomes so involved, so wrapped up in the emotions and actions of the characters, that you just do not want it to end. And you really cannot second guess the ending because the writers, are so, so clever and artful, that they will be sure to make it something that makes you gasp.....and long for another season as soon as the current one ends!
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
I love Canadians!!
I have been watching Eugene Levy and Katherine O'Hara for years and years going back to Waiting for Goffman..or even before! These people are so funny, outrageous, whacky and just geniuses at what they do!! And they never stop doing it! You know parts of the show - a lot of the show, sometimes, are ad libbed. You can usually tell once you watch them for a while! This is a good time for my husband and I to watch Schitt's Creek as he is having hip replacement surgery next week!!
Secrets & Lies (2014)
A taut drama about the investigation into the death of a child with a previously unseen villain at the end.
My husband and I watched all six episodes of Secret and Lies (Australian version) and were engaged pretty much through out the whole series. We did think there was a bit too much histrionics on the part of almost all of the characters. It seems that they all had turn at being hysterical and screaming and crying with faces all scrunched up. We knew the main suspect in Thom's death was not going to be the final killer. But we did not see the ending coming until it was upon us. It was a sort of after the fact ending, producing a killer who had no attention on him/her at all previously during the series. The story the killer told in confession was believable enough.....But then he/she had to add one other statement that showed just how dark the killer's heart really was! This was definitely not a feel-good show!
Orange Is the New Black: Toast Can't Never Be Bread Again (2016)
One of the best episodes of the whole series
We've been watching Orange is the New Black since its beginning. The first two seasons were good. Very different from ordinary "television". The characters were being developed and by the end of season 2, there was a good differentiation between characters and story lines. Season 3 seemed to be reaching, so the tack was taken to try to present backgrounds of the characters that had previously just been inmates...who were these women, where did they come from, what had they done to end up in Litchfield. Finally, season four presented us with new characters and situations as the prison was taken over by a for profit corporation. Familiar characters as CO's left and were replaced by more brutal mercenary CO's. The final episode of season 4 was artful, beautiful, sad, haunting. The show finally attempted to make a statement about the brutality of prison life and how easy it is for decent people to respond to brutality with brutality of their own.....In this situation, all is lost. No one wins. This is the best episode of the entire series.
